ArmandDuval replied to erzbet's topic in Your Favorites
Oh, my GOSH! What wonderful photos! You really have a nice collection, and I imagine you are only scatching the surface, so keep them coming. I don't know Yes, Yes Yvette, but she looked gorgeous in it. -

Yes, I second that emotion, georgie! And, for heaven's sake, you write very well. There are some on these threads who don't. It drives me mad when they completely disregard punctuation: ?It's me I'm back again with another movie have you guys seen Love Affair great movie I think it was made during the 1930's about a couple who meets on a sea voyage but are promised to both marry other people it's a great movie I think there are two different makes of this movie but the first one was the best great movie!? But, I digress! Anyway, I just get so cussin' mad sometimes when things are put into categories like the topic we are discussing on this thread. I do get carried away! And, rayallen, I do agree with you. I do think that for the most part the people who participate on these threads are sophisticated. Even if they don't especially care for a certain movie or actor, at least they can discuss them with some knowledge, and THAT is the key to the quality of the TCM Boards. Of course, you will always get those who enjoy ruining things for others, but fortunately they are few. -
What are your five favorite actors?

I don't want to nit pick, but shouldn't that be WHO are your favorites? -
Was it a "woman's movie" or a "man's movie"??
ArmandDuval replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Ok, I can't remeber the name of the movie. It is British. They have a rendezvous in a train station and go to a friend's apartment. What do you think about that one? I think it is kinda both. -

It doesn't matter! Gone With the Wind was a miracle of film making, and anyone who does't like it can just go jump! That's like not liking Camille, or Anna Karenina, or Queen Christina, or Garbo! Ha! -

I'm sorry, too! I don't want your head to get any smaller! Ha! You are a great poster and a great debater. I'm sorry I brought in the teacher element. It really doesn't mean anything when it comes down to it. I was just trying to explain myself, silly wasn't it? Let's just move on and have fun! I love chick flicks! Sorry, everyone! I guess it's my wife's influence. Oh, well you can't explain it away THAT easily. I do enjoy your posts georgie, so let's just give up on this! Unless someone else has something earth shattering to say. -
Well, it is only because it's Hedy Lamarr and Victor Mature! Ha!

Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy SWEETHEARTS on TCM APR 28
ArmandDuval replied to erzbet's topic in Your Favorites
Oh, my gosh! I love Jeanette! And, Nelson! Anytime a movie of their's is on, I watch it! Unfortunately, I haven't seen all of them, but I have seen many. Here are a couple of pics: -
Well, as impossible as I know it is, I would have liked Samson to run away with Delilah to Egypt when they had the chance! Then, there would have been no castastrophe and no deaths. If Miriam hadn't come to the camp when she did, Delilah wouldn't have been consumed with jealosy enough to cut off Samson's hair, and they could have slipped off together and lived happily ever after! Ah, what a WONDERFUL Samson and Delilah story!

Was it a "woman's movie" or a "man's movie"??

Ah! Madame Bovary! Now, there is a question! Is it a man's movie or a woman's? I think it is for both. When He discovers his wife is the most popular woman at the party, and he is roaring drunk, he tries to dance with her, but just embarrasses her, which is every man's fear. How about RAIN, wih Joan Crawford. Is that a chick filck, or both? -

"I have never seen The Longest Yard , or Nine Yards or something like that and quite a few other 'guy flicks'. If given a choice, I will usually pick a 'chick flick' over a shot 'em up. This is not to say I don't like action movies, I'm just more drawn to those pics aimed at my gender." Well, if given a choice, then you will go with the "chick flick," not the "guy flick." So, that just negates the whole argument that we should get rid of the labels! I know it's hard. Sheez, I have wrestled with my own conscious. But, I will deliberately watch and force myself to "destroy" stereotypes when I can. Like The Women, which is usually, and even most often, a Chick Flick, but I deliberately try to see it from a film maker's percpective, and not catergorize it into gender. Oh, I am just debating! I am a Speech and English teacher. So, don't fret too much, and perhaps I came on too strong. I just want to destroy this gender thing as much as you do, but I don't have much hope. -

Ha! That was a scream! And, much too PHALLIC! Now, as for GUYS and DOLLS, I think that would be for both! It has BRANDO, which is definitely male, and ROMANCE, which is, well, shall I say, definitely female? -

Thanks, but it has been four years, and I have learned to adjust. But, I still watch The Women, Camille, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The Maltese Falcon, etc. -

So, georgie, in your "As We Evolve" statement, it would seem that you are backing down. So, is this thread just a sham? If you like the guy flicks for the men, isn't that just sex, again? So, what's the point of this thread? I thought it was suppose to lift us to a new level, unite us as one human race, not make us realize why we actually like chick flicks, if we are guys (for the babes), and like guy flicks, if we are gals (for the studs). So, what's up with that? This is not a confrontation, just a disapointment. I thought we were breaking new ground, but as usual, it all falls back into the norm. So, why BOTHER? -

ArmandDuval replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Don't you just LOVE opinions? They are just like ********, everyone has one! Well, first of all, this is exactly the kind of thread that divides not unifies. So, let me start dividing. First of all, I love The Women, as did my wife before she died. We found it HILARIOUS! The stereotypes were so well done that it became one of our "let's put on The Women and laugh" films. And, we both thought it was a turning point in Roz Russell's career. She was the star! But, I agree that for the original audiences, it was "probably" a woman's movie. Now, as for the Sierra Madre, I have to admit my wife was not as taken by that as I was, and I have seen it three times. I find it easy to identify with due to the greed and murder aspects of the film. I would suppose many women would find that distasteful, or not. I don't know, I try not to judge. But, for the original audience, I would think the women "probably" found it boring without any women in it. Now, as for Garbo, the greatest star who ever lived, I find her film's pace very Garbo, which is fine for me. But, I understand in today's "give it to me NOW" society, she seems a little slow and langurous! But, that is exactly why I am such a fan. She feeds my neurosis! I love it when she dies. And, as for the new audiences finding it dull, I have personally given old movies as gifts to various individuals, and for the most part, anyone who gets Camille thanks me! Granted they are mostly women. But, that hardly matters. Anyway, I imagine there will be countless stereotypical answers on this thread. I can't wait to read the expected. -

Bring an end to Chick Flicks and Guy Flicks.
ArmandDuval replied to Annieandherbananas's topic in General Discussions
I'm with you, Annie. I'm waiting for the day when we are all people instead of men and women, but I doubt that day will ever come due to "sex." That is the one element that separates the men from the boys and guy flicks from the chick flicks. A buddy of mine just used that expression the other day talking about his addiction to sci-fi. He said he'd take a bad sci-fi over a great chick flick anyday. I wanted to say, "What? Are you nuts?" But, I knew the conversation that would ensue, so I just agreed and punched him in the shoulder. It is a great barrier, and the real trouble is that women will not hesitate to be a "man," but men still refuse to be a "woman." Therefore, they will all assume you will like Moonstruck, because it is easier just to stay in your safety zone. That way you don't have to rebuff all of the judgments from the other guys. I couldn't imagine telling all my buddies, "I just LOVE Jeanette MacDonald!" Ha! Are you mad??? But, I can watch her and all the rest in private, and come on this board, in private, and proclaim my "betrayal" to my gender, as liberating and "individual." -
Well, I am sure that is exactly what was intended. She was playing a hooker, lady of the evening, ten-cents-a-dance girl. All of the respectable women in the film took pot shots at her. Even Madame Yu-Lan said (I can't remember exactly, but), "The actions of a woman like her simply don't exist!" They did the same thing to Joan Crawford in Rain as Sadie Thompson: Jean didn't look as bad as she did: I think in the Thirties, as today, too much make-up and too many ruffles, etc. equaled cheap floozy!
