  1. DODSWORTH has a great last line: "Love has to stop some place short of suicide."
  2. "The Secret Life of Tyrone Power," by Hector Arce.
  3. Laird Cregar is wonderful, as always, making me regret that his career was so short. And what a great climax, when we learn why he was hounding Victor Mature.
  4. My only reservation about WHITE HEAT is that the picture should have ended with that unforgettable scene. But somebody decided to tack on Edmond O'Brien's tongue-clucking comment.
  5. MOBY DICK is a good choice. Basehart does fine work, and IMO it's Gregory Peck's best performance. Another great nut-job role for Basehart is in THE BLACK BOOK (a.k.a. REIGN OF TERROR), in which he plays Robespierre. And about HE WALKED BY NIGHT: when he's trapped in the sewer, unable to lift the manhole cover, does that echo or foreshadow THE THIRD MAN? I don't know which film came first -- they were both released around the same time.
  6. A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN shows the difference between genuine feeling and phony, tear-jerking sentimentality.
  7. Rather interviews Stone? One fantasist interviews another.
  8. It would have to be one of the early ones with Ginger Rogers (it's hard to choose among them). Sometimes the best choices are obvious.
  9. Definitely. It's a non-look because Dietrich didn't allow herself to be filmed. The portrait is a devastating one.
  10. DEADLY HERO is rarely seen; it's the only film I know of in which Don played a villain. I hope they show it. SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL is outstanding; IMHO it was Cagney's last great film. THE BACHELOR PARTY is notable for the performances of Don Murray and Carolyn Jones.
  11. *The Razor's Edge* and *Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.*
  12. The latest movie I saw that I thought was terrific was *The Blue Max.*
  13. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this delightful thread.
  14. In *The Smallest Show on Earth,* the audience rushes out as the movie ends so they won't have to stand while "God Save the Queen" is played. They are called "anthem sprinters."
  15. A good reason to watch it -- or any movie -- is Helen Mirren.
  16. And how about all those movies where people are shown to be sophisticated by having them smoke? (Tobacco, that is.) Well, sometimes it worked. Who could forget *Now, Voyager,* in which Paul Henreid put two cigarettes in his mouth, lit both of them, then gave one to Bette Davis? But now it seems like an odd way to show that you care about someone.
  17. UPDATE: Also, *Girls! Girls! Girls!* *Tora! Tora! Tora!*
  18. In *Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House,* Blandings makes a cool $15,000 a year, and the final cost of the house is a staggering $39,500.
  19. To darkblue: Another is Viveca Lindfors.
  20. The fact that it was a woman who wrote the original story, and called it "The Quirt," adds an intriguing angle to this question. Welcome to this site, molly. Your debut is an impressive one.
  21. Films such as *The Desk Set* (and a lot of sci-fi movies) in which we know we're looking at a computer because it takes up most of the wall, and there are a lot of lights blinking.
