Saul Bass was probably the best designer of credits ever. The credits for DR. STRANGELOVE were certainly unusual in their design. BTW, they contain an error that no one caught before the release: "Base on the book Red Alert by Peter George."
-
That's hilarious. I never heard of those before.
-
The most unusual credits I've seen were: In ALL THAT JAZZ: Open heart surgery In MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME: Pig wrangler Monkey wrangler (Camel wrangler doesn't appear in the movie's credits -- you'll have to check IMDb if you really want to know who had that job.) Are there any other far-out credits?

It's too bad the "Hot Voodoo" number couldn't have been saved for later in the film -- perhaps as a flashback. Keep the audience waiting! That's what was done in GILDA. Rita Hayworth tantalizes us by singing a bit of "Mame" in the nearly deserted club, but we don't see her knockout strip tease (partial, at least) until late in the movie.

The Dietrich/von Sternberg films should be called The Magnificent Seven.
-
The trouble is, after Marlene's "Hot Voodoo" number, everything is an anticlimax.

In SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH and THE BEGUILED, there are other, younger, more conventionally attractive actresses, but for me, Geraldine Page leaves them all far behind. -
No one ever looked better in a gorilla suit. A terrific movie.

"Tainted Lady" (1931) begins with Tallulah Bankhead standing blindfolded. She says, "Go ahead, shoot!" And then.... Well, if you ever get a chance to see this, her first film, you'll learn what happens next. But it certainly grabs your attention right from the start.

That's an amusing story about Vidal and Williams. And I apologize for mistyping "to" as "too."
-
As W. C. Fields once said: "Uh, quite the antithesis."

What's wrong with "$hit"? It means "dollars hit." Honi soit qui mal y pense.

In CONFIDENTIAL AGENT, what I found most shocking was Charles Boyer slapping Paxinou, saying, "Before you die, this is for Else." Then he slaps her again -- and this time she may already be dead! Edited by: faceinthecrowd on Nov 27, 2013 2:33 PM -

Yootha Joyce is not attractive in the conventional sense, but I find her face very sensual -- that mouth! I first became aware of her in the AVENGERS episode, "Something Nasty in the Nursery." She also has a memorable scene with Anne Bancroft in THE PUMPKIN EATER. Edited by: faceinthecrowd on Nov 26, 2013 6:33 AM -
I'm going to date myself, too: The Million Dollar Movie was where I first saw CITIZEN KANE (with the newsreel omitted to fit the time slot) and KING KONG. I saw each picture five times in one week.

A good rule is to avoid remakes. Very, very few are even half as good as the original.

Mercedes McCambridge. In ALL THE KING'S MEN, John Ireland makes a pass at her, and I can well understand that. Joanne Dru is in the same picture, and she's no slouch, but I thought M.M. was sexier. -
IMDb doesn't list an uncredited appearance by Webb in THE OLD CORRAL, and they're usually pretty good at that. I recently saw THREE ON A MATCH again, but I couldn't spot him as a schoolboy. If IMDb says so, I'll take their word for it. Another interesting uncredited part by Webb is in THE SCAR, a.k.a. HOLLOW TRIUMPH, where he plays a gangster known as Bullseye.

Meeker was the best Mike Hammer ever in KMD. I guess the reason the film wasn't included has to fall under the category of The Great Whatsis.

If you Google Greta Garbo by Arnold Genthe you'll see what Garbo looked like before Hollywood changed her.

Ellen Barkin is a good choice. Her lopsided mouth really gets to me. It should be noted that there is a similar thread in the YOUR FAVORITES section: Stars You Find Gorgeous But Aren't the Usual Suspects. I think you'll find a lot of unconventional beauties there.

Hemingway's works don't translate well to the screen because the author's voice isn't present. It works only when they use the bare bones of the plot and nothing else. The same thing is true of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novels. As for Flynn: I assume that Hemingway was talking about the actor in his older days. When he was young, Flynn was handsome and alive and practically defined swashbuckling.

How many times have you seen....?

*Citizen Kane.* 40, maybe 50.
