  1. I must be making these too easy. Yes. Mr. Muddy, It was Mary Martin. In the fifties she did a live television production of "Peter Pan". The "Who Shot J.R.?" episode of "Dallas" was a season ending cliff-hanger. Viewers had to wait until the new season to find out that it was Mary Crosby. Here's something you may not have known. When Barbara Bel Geddes left "Dallas" for health reasons, she was replaced by Donna Reed as the mother of the Ewing boys. Mary Martin was offered the role first, but turned it down. Your turn, Skip.

  2. Thanks. In the 1940's, a female musical actress made a handfull of movies. A couple of them were with one of the top male musical stars of the era. She never became a major movie star, however, but she did go on to become one of Broadway's all time greats. She appeared in some of Broadway's best loved musicals, and in the fifties she starred in a live musical play on television that was very well received. Some years later, her only son appeared on a TV show with the only daughter of that top male musical star that I referred to. The TV show became one of the most talked about TV shows of all time. Can you name the musical actress and actor and their children that worked together, as well as the famous TV show that I referred to?

  3. You can research anything you like, although I don't know what you can find from these clues. Clue No. 3. The woman's married friend is named Madge. Madge's husband is a close friend of the man from the hotel, whose name is Jerry. They invite Jerry to visit, as well. Somehow, through a case of mistaken identity, the woman, whose name is Dale, thinks that Jerry is Madge's husband, and he has been making passes at Dale.

  4. Jonathan Winters - Thanks, Eve. When I saw that William Bendix was a co-star, I didn't go any further.

  6. Here's what I think. Ava Gardner had an affair with Robert Taylor while he was still married to Barbara Stanwyck. He later divorced Barbara and married Ursula Theiss. Ava moved on to Frank Sinatra, who divorced his non-pro wife, Nancy, and married Ava. Nancy and Barbara became good friends. Did you know that Barbara Stanwyck died just five days before Ava Gardner died in January 1990?.

  7. "Bert Rigby, You're A Fool" has got to be writer/director Carl Reiner's most unknown movie. Cmvgor, you're probably one of a handful of people who can claim that they have seen it. I haven't, but I'd certainly like to. Why don't you tell us what you thought of the musical numbers? The reviews in IMDB are quite favorable.

  8. Well, there's "The Man In The Iron Mask" and "The Corsican Brothers". Both were from stories by Alexander Dumas and both have been done several times, but I'll dismiss them because the men were twins separated at birth. There's "I Was Monty's Double" with Clifton James, "Dave", with Kevin Kline, and "Calloway Went Thataway" with Howard Keel. There's even a segment in Mel Brooks' "History Of The World, Part 1" that fits the situation. Who knows how many others there are? I think we need a more detailed clue.

  9. Yes, cujas. "The Fleet's In" was Betty Hutton's feature film debut. It was directed by Victor Shertzinger, who wrote most of the songs, along with lyricist Johnny Mercer. The Arthur Murray song featured the line "You've heard of Pavlova, well, Jack move over, Make way for the queen of the dance". Betty Hutton's sister, Marion Hutton, was a vocalist with the Glenn Mller orchestra at that time. Glenn Miller's featured male vocalist was Ray Eberle, whose brother, Bob Eberly, sang with Jimmy Dorsey's orchestra, along with Helen O'Connell. Of course, Helen O'Connell, Bob Eberly, and Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra were featured in "The Fleet's In". Your turn, cujas.

  10. Thanks. There was another big band singer named Helen. Helen O'Connell had a hit with a novelty tune called "Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing In A Hurry". The song was featured in a 40's movie, but Helen O'Connell did not sing it in the movie, another woman did. Can you name the movie and the other woman who sang this song? I'll give you a hint. This other woman had a sister who was a big band singer.

  11. They both played the Damon Runyon character "Nicely-Nicely Johnson". Stubby Kaye played the role in "Guys And Dolls" both on Broadway and in the movie version. Eugene Pallette played the role in "The Big Street", which was recently shown on TCM.

  12. Now finance, you know how I hate partial answers. You got the tough one. I'll give a hint to you and all the others out there. The later song started with the line "It's A Lovely Day" and it also ended with the line "It's A Lovely Day". Apparently Irving Berlin knew when he had a good thing. Do a little research. This one won't take long at all.

  13. Thanks. Here are descriptions of five roles played by one actress. A fatally flirtatious ranch foreman's wife; a New England doctor's frightened daughter who becomes insane; a share-cropper's gallant, tireless wife; a social-climbing ex-racketeer's beloved Daisy; mother to a town's most beautiful girl, whose life is disrupted on labor day weekend. Can you name the actress who played all these roles and the five movie titles?

  14. It was a terrific question, ms. Now, here's one that is a little different. Irving Berlin wrote songs for many movies. In one of his better known musicals there is a song that is sung by a man to a woman and the last line of the song is "It's A Lovely Day". Some years later, Berlin had another musical with a song sung by a man to a woman and this time the first line of the song is "It's A Lovely Day". Can you name the two songs, the two movies, the men who sang them, and the women they sang them to? I know it's not much to go on, so I'll give you a hint. Both men and both women were pretty good dancers. Give it a try. It'll be fun doing the research.
