  1. Thanks. A few weeks ago I posted about Shirley Temple and Alice Faye both singing "When I'm With You" from the movie "The Poor Little Rich Girl", which was just shown on TCM recently. Well, guess what? The same thing happened in another Shirley Temple movie. The adult woman sang a song that became a pretty big hit and Shirley did a version with lyrics tailored for a child. The song became a modest hit for the woman and it was also a fairly big hit for Benny Goodman and his orchestra. Years later, another completely different song, with the exact same title, became a hit for Paul Anka. Can you name the movie, the woman, and the song?

No takers yet? Here's some help. In the movie, Robert Young and Alan "Rocky" Lane are rivals for the affections of the woman. Shirley impersonates Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, and Ginger Rogers, and she also speaks some Chinese.

  2. Yes, Lana, the Ruggles brothers are a correct answer. I actually had in mind Lloyd Bacon and Irving Bacon. Lloyd directed some minor classics at Warner Bros. Irving was in more than four hundred films. He played Gus, the handyman, in "Holiday Inn", who drives Marjorie Reynolds into a lake. Sorry to take so long getting back to you. Your turn, Lana.

  3. Yes, it's Ann Sheridan. I failed to mention that she was also one of the top pin-up queens of World War II, along with Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, and Lynn Bari. The soap opera was "Another World", and the western series was "Pistols N' Petticoats". Good job, Lana. Your turn now.

  4. Thanks. I won a beauty contest in Texas in my teens. My sister sent my picture into a contest where first prize was a screen test at a Hollywood studio. Yes, it really happened that way. I won that contest and got signed by Paramount. I was given a lot of bit parts that called for a pretty girl. After two years, I left and went to another studio where they gave me a big publicity build-up and put me in movies opposite their top leading men. I became one of their top leading ladies, although I was given a nickname that I detested. I did dramas, comedies and an occasional musical. I had quite a nice singing voice. Once I got into my late thirties, the good roles stopped coming. I went into TV work on a soap opera and later starred in a western series. However, I developed cancer and passed away before the end of the show's first season. I was only fifty-one. Do you know me?

  5. We know that John Ford was a director and his brother, Francis was an actor. We also know that James Cagney was an actor and his brother , William, gave up acting to become a producer and agent for James. There is another pair of siblings that started acting in the silent days. One continued acting and became a very prolific character actor into the 50's. The other one acted sometimes in the early thirties, but eventually became a full time director with some rather impressive screen credits. Remember to phrase your answer in the form of a question.

  6. Natalie Kalmus was the wife of the inventor of the Technicolor process. Part of the deal that the Technicolor people made was that Natalie was allowed to be on the set during production and she would receive screen credit. Later, Henry Jaffe also filled that role.

  7. Thanks. A few weeks ago I posted about Shirley Temple and Alice Faye both singing "When I'm With You" from the movie "The Poor Little Rich Girl", which was just shown on TCM recently. 8. In the making of "Lifeboat", the boat that the cast was in was raised up off the floor so that it could be rocked by stage hands. The cast members had to climb a little ladder to get in to shoot a scene. Hume Cronyn related the story that Talulah Bankhead did not wear underwear and every time she climbed into the boat she "flashed" the rest of the cast. Cronyn complained to Hitchcock that it was becoming a distraction. Hitchcock said he didn't know if it was a problem for the wardrobe department or for the hairdresser. Now:

  9. Lana, we must be thinking alike lately. Maybe it's ESP! Louise Fazenda is correct. After her silent screen days were over, she had a very nice career as a character actress at Warner Bros. in the thirties. She was very good in "The Broadway Gondolier" with Dick Powell and Joan Blondell. She was married to Hal Wallis, who was Warner's top producer. He was having an affair with Lola Lane. When Louise found out and threatened to ruin him, he called off the affair. After that, at least in Hollywood circles, he was known as "the prisoner of Fazenda". Lana, it's your turn now.

  10. Robert Duvall - I liked that "Singin' In The Rain" clue.

When Upton Sinclair Wrote "The Jungle" About The Meat Packing Industry, He Was Termed A __________raker By Teddy Roosevelt After Making "Four Daughters" And "Daughters Courageous", Actress Gale Page Was Referred To As "The Fourth ________ Sister" What Bacall Called Bogie Throughout "To Have And Have Not" He Was TV's "Ben Casey" Irving Berlin Wrote "I've Got The _______ In The Morning And The Moon At Night"

  11. Hey, when you're on the TCM message boards, you're playing with the big kids now. Actually, I just remembered reading once that Howard Keel had worked in an aircraft plant at one time, so I took a shot at it. Here's one off the top of my head. I was a silent screen comedienne who did a lot of work with Mack Sennett. As I got older and sound films came in, I adjusted to playing character parts in comedies and musicals. I was under contract to Warner Bros. for a number of years in the thirties. I married a producer and when I found out that he was having an affair with a younger actress, I threatened to ruin him financially. He called off the affair and the young actress's career went down hill slowly. He acquired a new nickname as the result of my threat. Do you know me?

  12. Lana, I am impressed. You are 100% correct and in less than two hours after the question was posted. I was going to throw in a clue about Pat O'Brien being in the picture, but that certainly wasn't necessary. Yes, Doc Severinsen got his start with the Ted Fio Rito orchestra when he was still a teen-ager. The song "I'll String Along With You" became a standard in the thirties. Great job, Lana. It's your turn now.
