  1. You are partly right, Dan. You got "Young People" with Jack Oakie and Charlotte Greenwood, but the earlier film was not "Bright Eyes", nor was the song "The Good Ship Lollipop". James Dunn is correct. He was not only in "Bright Eyes", but he was in several other movies with Shirley. Would you care to try another movie and song?

  2. Thanks, Dan. I seem to be thinking about Shirley Temple movies lately and here's a question about one of them. In her last film as a child for Twentieth Century Fox, Shirley plays the adopted daughter of vaudvillians, who retire from show biz and move to the country so Shirley can have a normal life. In one production number she is seen dancing with the tuxedo-clad actor who plays her adoptive father. They are dancing to one of her better known songs, although mudskipper would probably consider it obscure. In a flashback, we see a much younger Shirley dancing to that same song with a tuxedo-clad actor who was supposed to be the same adoptive father, but was actually another actor in one of her early movies. We do not see his face. Lots of questions now. What was the movie that I described and what was the earlier movie that the flashback was from? Who were the two dancing actors, and what was the song? Here's a major clue. One of the actors later played "The Brooklyn Thrush" in a very well known movie. Please, no partial answers. If we get partial answers then we don't know who gets the next turn. Oh, and one more thing. Unlike Dan's questions, you actually can find the answers to everything in this post on IMDB, but you may have to work at it.

  3. I'm guilty of this myself, but don't you hate it when someone begins their question with "Here's an easy one", and then you can't figure it out? I think I finally did. Johnny Weismuller, the best known Tarzan, was once married to Lupe Velez. In the movie "Hollywood Party", she does a "reciprocal destruction" routine with Laurel and Hardy involving eggs and high heeled shoes, and culminating with her sitting on an egg. The movie also has a parody of Tarzan, where Jimmy Durante plays Schnarzan, and Lupe plays Jungle Girl. After she divorced Weismuller, there was a famous newspaper picture of Lupe sitting on a lawn chair with a newspaper opened to the comic strip section. She was reading "Jungle Jim", and the caption said 'Where will she find another Tarzan?"

  4. I just love it when people have to do a little research to answer my questions. Yes, Mudskipper is right. "They Always Pick On Me" was sung by Alice Faye in "Hello Frisco, Hello", a movie that also featured the Oscar winning song, "You'll Never Know". Alice Faye also sang "You'll Never Know" in a guest appearance in "Four Jills In A Jeep". Betty Boop sang "They Always Pick On Me" in a cartoon that featured Cab Calloway doing "Minnie the Moocher", (She was a real **** coocher), around 1932. You may recall that Alice Faye was the movie star that Archie Bunker used to dream about. You can see her with Shirley Temple and Jack Haley in "The Poor Little Rich Girl" coming up on July 23rd. Alice and Shirley will sing different versions of "When I'm with You". You'll also see Tony Martin in a cameo appearance and Gloria Stuart of "Titanic" fame. After the events of the last few days, I wonder if our friend finance is singing "They Always Pick On Me". Your turn, Muddy.

  5. Is it safe now? Let's hope so. In the thirties and forties, Twentieth Century Fox was known for their "Old Time" musicals, which were set in the period from the gay nineties to the roaring twenties. They featured songs from that earlier period as well as songs written especially for the movie. The ladies were usually played by Betty Grable, Alice Faye, Lynn Bari, and Carmen Miranda. The men were comprised of Don Ameche, John Payne, Dick Haymes, Tyrone Power, and Cesar Romero. Comic relief was provided by Jack Haley, Phil Silvers, and Jack Oakie. In one of these movies, the leading lady sang, what was at the time, a vintage song with some memorable lyrics. Some of the lines were:

I'm so very lonesome, awfully sad,

It's a long time since I've been glad,

But I know what I'll do, bye and bye,

I'll eat some worms and then I'll die

What was this song about worms? Who was the actress who sang it? What was the movie that she sang it in?

This isn't the ten clues thread, so I'll give you a major clue right now. The movie also featured the Oscar winning song that year. Please don't give partial answers. Just like Frank Sinatra sang, I want "all or nothing at all".

  8. Sorry, Eve. I hadn't scrolled back very far. If you're going to give finance a hard time, well then, YOU GO GIRL! And this time, I'll stay out of the fray! Just let me know when the coast is clear.

  9. How about four? They wrote "Pocketful Of Miracles" and "Where Love Has Gone" which both featured Bette Davis. They also wrote "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Star" which both starred Julie Andrews. Did you know that Jimmy Van Heusen took his name from the Van Heusen shirt company?

  10. *Ride The Wild Surf*. It seems that Fredo had seen "The Endless Summer" and dearly wanted to be a champion surfer, but he never had a lesson. I agreed to give Fredo private lessons. I told Vito that I would have Fredo "hanging ten" within a week. Vito replied that Fredo already knew how to do that. "Why just last week, we had him hang twelve or thirteen, I can't remember the exact number", he casually remarked. I made an excuse that I had to go wax my board and I would meet Fredo at the beach the following day. I searched the yellow pages for surf shops and finally found one not far away. It was called ...
