  1. Thanks, Eve. I saw "Blonde Venus" many years ago at a college screening. I wish TCM would show it. I do recall that in the movie Marlene Dietrich encountered a woman of, shall we say, questionable morals. Dietrich asked her what she did. The woman replied "I'm a taxi dancer". Then Dietrich asked "Do you charge for the first mile?"

Now, what movie featured a future star of the Lawrence Welk show in a small role as a young singer in a college musical production?

By the way, if you don't know what a taxi dancer was, think of the song "Ten Cents A Dance" or perhaps one from "Sweet Charity" called "Hey, Big Spender".

  2. Florence Henderson

  3. Right again, Cujas. John Lodge was a politically connected Wall Street attorney who had done some acting at Harvard and in New York. His Italian born wife, Francesca, whom he met while at Harvard, also did some acting and dancing. She was hired by MGM to dub Greta Garbo's voice in movies that were to be released in Italy. That's what brought them to California. He got a contract at Paramount and, the story goes, was spotted by Mae West, who wanted him for her next picture, "She Done Him Wrong". However, Miss West was somewhat controversial, and Lodge's family did not approve of him working with her, and he turned down the opportunity. Mae spotted another handsome fellow on the lot and got the studio to give him the part. His name was Cary Grant.

By the way, George Murphy played Ronald Reagan's father in "This Is The Army". Later, each of them served as president of the Screen Actors Guild. You are busy today, Cujas. It's your turn again!

  4. I guess I did make it pretty easy, Cujas. So, you trod the boards? Recently, on another forum here, there was a discussion about Ruby Keeler and James Cagney being "Buck Dancers". Could you tell us what that is? In the meantime, the next question is yours.

  5. I don't know if that's a blessing or a curse, probably the latter. Here's one that's not to tough. Irving Berlin wrote hundreds of songs, with many of them being performed in movies. He only appeared in one movie, singing one of his songs. The song had been performed by Jack Haley in another movie some years earlier. What was the song, and what were the two movies that it was performed in?

  6. Thanks, I really had some other films in mind for a while. The gunfight at the O.K. corral was in 1881 and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had their last showdown in Bolivia in 1908. I wonder how many times Billy the Kid has been portrayed in movies. We'll leave that for another thread. Now, as you may know, Shirley Temple just celebrated her 82nd birthday. As you also know, after her acting career was over, she became involved in politics and was at one time the U.S. ambassador to Ghana. I bet she regrets making a "Baby Burlesk" short called "Kid'n Africa" when she was about four or five. In her movie career she worked with an actor who would later become president, another actor who would become a U.S. senator, and a third actor who would become a governor. Can you name all three actors and the films in which they worked with Shirley. The first two should be easy.

  7. Edith Head

Julia Sweeney's Gender-Ambiguous Character On "Saturday Night Live" Paul Simon Had A Song And A Movie Called "One ________ Pony" He Played William Devane's Father On "Knotts Landing" + Irving Berlin Wrote "Mandy, There's A Minister Handy, And It Sure Would Be Dandy, If We'd Let Him Make A _________"

  8. You are referring to I.A.L. Diamond, Billy Wilder's long time collaborator. While at Columbia University, he wrote for the college humor magazine under the name I.A.L.Diamond because his real first name, Itec (pronounced Itzak) sounded too Jewish. He said that the initials I.A.L. stood for Interscholastic Algebra League.

  9. Actually, it was the Princeton clue that led me to the answer. I knew that Joshua Logan had been a student at Princeton around the same time as Jimmy Stewart, and that he hadn't directed a whole lot of movies, so it was easy from there. Now, do you know me? I was a popular actress who had some major emotional problems. I had once been married to a well known actor, but the marriage only lasted about five years. A few years after our divorce, I had a relationship with another young actor and found myself unmarried and pregnant. Not wanting to have an abortion, or to bring shame to my family, I decided to commit suicide. The are unconfirmed reports about the details of my death, but the best known version is that I had fixed myself a large meal, took an overdose of sleeping pills and retired to my bed with my suicide note beside me. However, the combination of the pills and the meal made me sick, and as I ran to the bathroom to throw up, I stumbled, hitting my head on the toilet and killing myself. That story was related by Roz to Frasier on the "Frasier" TV show. Her point was that sometimes things don't go the way we want them to, but can work out in the end, anyway. Do you know me now?

  10. Thanks, finance. There's always a question about a movie with a similar theme being a remake of an earlier film. Let's just say that Spencer Tracy made a rare western that was sort of a remake of an earlier movie that starred Edward G. Robinson. They each played the somewhat ruthless patriarch of a family with troubled sons. Some years later there was another movie with a similar theme, but with a circus settting. Can you name the three movies and the actor who played the father in the circus movie?

  11. Very good, phroso. Yes, "Follow The Fleet" was made by RKO and starred Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Harriet Hilliard was a singer with her husband, Ozzie Nelson's, band. She appeared in several movies in the mid thirties. Around 1951, Ozzie, Harriet, and their two sons made a movie called "Here Come The Nelsons", which served as sort of a pilot film for their TV series. The movie featured a very young Rock Hudson. That's right, future hearthrobs Rock Hudson and Ricky Nelson were in a movie together before anyone knew who they were. Lucille Ball was a contract player at RKO. She appeared in several movies with Ginger, including "Roberta" and "Stage Door". Later, Lucy and her husband, Desi Arnaz, bought RKO and produced TV shows such as "The Untouchables" there under the name "Desilu Productions". Randolph Scott, who had also played Fred's friend in "Roberta", was appearing in all kinds of movies, but it soon became apparent that he was best suited for westerns and action films, and starting in the forties, that's what he concentrated on. Your turn , phroso.

  12. Thanks, Charlie. In the mid thirties two actresses appeared in supporting roles in a musical film. Some years later, both of them would go on to become major television stars. In the movie, one of them, who was more of a singer than actress, played the plain Jane sister of the female lead. The other actress played the friend of the female lead, who was asked to do an "extreme makeover" on Miss Plain Jane in order to make her more attractive to the best friend of the male lead. The best friend of the male lead would go on to become a major star of westerns, but at this time he was doing whatever the studio assigned him to. What was the movie and who were the two actresses in supporting roles? By the way, the one who was a singer did not sing on TV. When she got into TV, she changed her name to her married name. Probably some of you know the answer right now.
