Gaspere Biondolillo ? Worst real names?
MilesArcher replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
We had a simiar thread in 2008 when I joined these boards. It was called "Will The Real Lucille LeSoeur Please Stand Up?" and it was in the Games and Trivia forum. -
Yes, I am Ross Alexander. I was in "Captain Blood' with Errol Flynn and "China Clipper" with Pat O'Brien and Humphrey Bogart. I was in "Shipmates Forever" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with Dick Powell. My last picture was "Ready, Willing, and Able" with Ruby Keeler, where I introduced the song "Too Marvelous For Words". My first wife was actress Aleta Friel and my second wife was Anna Nagel. Good work, finance. It's your turn. Oh, by the way, if this question seems familiar, I posted a simiar question about Ross Alexander some months ago, but I figured that there were enough new people who hadn't seen it, so I thought I would try it again.

Thanks, Lana. I thought of Edward Arnold immediately while reading your description. Now, do you know me? I was a rising young star in the 1930's. I was in an action/adventure picture with Errol Flynn and another with Pat O'Brien. I was cast in musicals and romantic comedies, and because of my youthful good looks, I could play college boys for years. However, I never achieved top-star status. I was in a few movies with Dick Powell and I was cast in some movies that he turned down. I was a gay actor at a time when it was career threatening to make it known. I entered into a marriage of convenience with an actress, but it was a disaster that ended when she committed suicide by shooting herself in the head. I quickly married another actress, but that only lasted a few months. The studio was growing tired of covering my secret and my parts were becoming fewer. In my last picture, a musical that Dick Powell was first offered, I played the male lead and I introduced a popular song. Before the film was released, in a state of deep depression, I committed suicide just like my former wife, by shooting myself in the head. When my last film was finally released, I was given fifth billing. Do you know me?

Thanks, Lavender. I knew about Richard and Pat Boone being cousins when I was checking on names for the "Same Name No Relation" thread. Of course, I couldn't use them then. As you probably know, the "Have Gun-Will Travel" theme was featured in Rob Reiner's film "Stand By Me", and now the show is featured on the Encore western channel. Now, do you know me? I was a popular child actor in the thirties and early forties, but in real life I was very mischeivous and disrespectful of authority. I once literally gummed up the works of the camera on the set with chewing gum. That forced a postonement in shooting for the day. I urinated on some kleeg lights so when they were turned on and heated up, the stench was so bad that the set had to be cleared. Director George Sidney said that he wanted to see me on my 18th birthday, just so he sould punch me in the nose. As I got into my teens, the kid parts were fewer and I became a supporting player. Somehow I seemed to be type cast as a mischeivous adolescent. I was one of the boys who stole a turkey in "Going My Way". I was the guy who pushed the button to open the gym floor over the pool in "It's a Wonderful Life". I was not what you would call a handsome lad. In "White Christmas" it was my picture that was used as Benny Haynes, the brother of Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. In the fifties I did some television, including several episodes of "The Roy Rogers Show". Roy and Dale were my Godparents. I also became a hunting guide. I got into a fight with my business partner over $50.00. He shot and killed me. The court called it self defense. I was only thirty-one years old. Do you know me?

Well, you got most of it. It was sung by Don Ameche in the 1938 film "Alexander's Ragtime Band", which starred Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and someone who would have a long association with Irving Berlin, Ethel Merman. If you have followed my posts on these boards recently, you know that Clifton Webb was a song and dance man on Broadway for years before he became familiar to movie audiences in films like "Laura", Cheaper By The Dozen", and "Mr. Belvedere Rings The Bell". Irving Berlin also took part of the verse melody of "Smile And Shoe Your Dimple" and used it in "Cheek To Cheek" for the movie "Top Hat". In case your wondering about "Smile And Show Your Dimple", here are the words to the refrain. Smile and show your dimple, You'll find it's very simple. You can think of something comical In a very clever way. Chase away the wrinkle, Sprinkle just a twinkle, Light your face up, Just brace up and smile You know the tune. Now, everybody sing! Oh, and as Paul Harvey used to say, "Now you know the REST of the story! It's your turn, finance.

Thanks, sixes. Here's one for this weekend. Irving Berlin's song "Easter Parade" was the title song to a 1948 movie with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland that will be shown on TCM on Easter Sunday. In 1942, it had been featured in "Holiday Inn", another film featuring Fred Astaire, and sung by Bing Crosby to Marjorie Reynolds. We all know this, I'm sure. What you may not know was that it was also performed in a movie prior to "Holiday Inn", and prior to that it had originated in a Broadway show. Irving Berlin needed a holiday themed song for the show and he went back to a song that he had written in the World War I era and took the refrain from that song, changed the words, added a verse, and called it "Easter Parade". This will be a multi-part question. What was the first movie that it was featured in and who sang it in the film? What was the Broadway show that it had been featured in and who were the performers who introduced it on stage? And finally, what was the song that Irving Berlin had originally written that the melody was adapted from? Please try to answer before "Easter Parade" is shown on Sunday, because Robert Osborne may give the answers to these questions then.
