Thank you, SueSue. Like Mary Wickes, I spent my career playing maids, teachers, nosy neighbors, battle axes, and even a few nuns. I started early in life, working in my parents vaudeville act. I got into the drama club at UCLA, which led to a career in theater as a young adult. I started in movies in small parts in the late forties. I was in some memorable films, including "A Place In The Sun" and "Singin' In The Rain". About 1954, I started working in television. I never had a series of my own, but I probably appeared in just about every series on TV over a period of about forty years. I worked with everyone including Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, and Bob Hope. I continued to work in movies, as well, appearing with the likes of John Wayne, and Cary Grant. I was in eleven movies with Jerry Lewis, including "The Nutty Professor" in 1963. I also worked with Eddie Murphy in one of his "Nutty Professor" movies. I appeared on the "Dragnet" TV show with Jack Webb and I was also in the "Dragnet" movie with Dan Aykroyd. In 1953, I appeared in a movie titled "The Affairs Of Dobie Gillis". In 1960, I guested on the TV series "The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis", and in the late eighties I was in the Dobie Gillis reunion show, titled "Bring Me The Head Of Dobie Gillis". At the time of my death, I had returned to theater work. I was working on Broadway and had been Tony-nominated. Do you know me now?

Mentioning Jack Benny and Dennis Day brought it to mind, so I thought I would try it again. By the way, instead of the term "rerun", I prefer "Encore Presentation". Your turn, finance.

Are you Mary Wickes?
-
Thanks, finance. Dennis Day was not Jack Benny's first tenor singer on his radio show. Dennis Day replaced another singer who had done a few movies and left to pursue a film career. This other singer had already had the honor of introducing the last two songs that George Gershwin wrote for a movie that was released after Gershwin's death. This other singer also worked with the Marx Brothers, Judy Garland, and Mary Martin in a career that would end in the early 1950's. Name the singer and the movie where he introduced the two Gershwin songs, as well as the two songs.

"Buck Benny Rides Again" (1940) featured Jack Benny and members of his radio show, including Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Phil Harris, and Dennis Day.

This may not be the person you had in mind, but how about Burt Reynolds? The major success would be "Deliverance", and the minor classic would be "Smoky and The Bandit". He romanced two time Oscar winner Sally Field, and he had relationships with Inger Stevens and Dinah Shore. Of course, he was married for a time to Loni Anderson. He did movies in Europe (Navajo Joe, 100 Rifles), as well as the U.S. He also did a lot of television work ( Riverboat, Gunsmoke, Dan August, Evening Shade). The clues fit.

Is it "Spring Tonic"?

Yes, Eve. Pioneertown is the place. It was named for Roy Rogers' singing group, The Sons Of The Pioneers. The thread is yours, but before you go on to the next question, do you know who that third founding actor was? He made his mark in Hopalong Cassidy movies. His wife was known as Mousie. Take a guess. You might get lucky.

Thanks, Eve. I knew that John Gilbert died young and he had a daughter. I also knew that one of his last affairs was with Marlene Dietrich, so maybe it was more of an educated guess. Now:
There is a town in California in the desert about 100 miles east of Los Angeles that was founded, or should I say built, for the purpose of filming western movies and TV shows. It was built in the late 1940's, just when TV westerns were starting to be made. It was the brainchild of three western actors, Roy Rogers, whom you all know, Dick Curtis, who was a character actor who played mostly villains, and a third man. This third actor made his mark in movies playing likeable sidekicks. He also had a ranch in the area and it was at his invitation that several film companies started filming there. This actual town was not a series of facades like you would find on a studio back lot, but actual working buildings. They also built a motel to house the film crews and one of the western buildings housed a bowling alley. Many a western TV show was made there, including The Gene Autry Show, The Cisco Kid, Judge Roy Bean, and The Range Rider. Today, with few westerns being made, it is now a tourist attraction. The question is: who was the third actor to co-found the town, and what is the name of the town? They came very close to calling it Rogersville, after Roy Rogers, but instead gave it another name.

Just a wild guess, is it Marlene Dietrich? Was she helping John Gilbert's daughter?

Yes, I am Pat Hitchcock. Since Mr. Sixes got in first, it is his thread.

Thanks, Eve. I knew she was Irish from one of your earlier posts. Now:
My father was a director and my mother was a film editor. I acted in some films directed by my father. I also had small roles in films directed by Jean Negulesco and Cecil B. DeMille. Most of my acting work was on television, with some of the shows directed by my father. I have been retired from acting for over thirty years now, but I did contribute to a book about my father and I co-wrote a book about my mother. Do you know me, or do you need another clue?

Leave it to a Hitchcock expert like Eve to know this one. Yes, Leo McCarey asked Alfred Hitchcock for the negative from "Strangers On a Train" where Walker dies under the carousel . When "My Son John" was released, audiences had no idea that they were watching a close-up from the Hitchcock movie, with director McCarey's own voice on the soundtrack, reciting the character's last impassioned speech. Eve, you've done it again! Your turn.

Thanks. Here's something I just learned about recently. Actor Robert Walker's last picture was "My Son John", which has been shown on TCM. He actually died before the final scene was shot, ironically, a scene of Walker writhing in agony. Yet, the scene does appear in the movie. How did director Leo McCarey pull off this bit of movie magic?

By Any Other Name..
