  2. Yes, it is Duncan Renaldo, who entered the country as a sailor on a Brazilian freighter that caught fire a burned at a Maryland dock. He got into films and also was a talented painter. When he was jailed for illegal immigration, Eleanor Roosevelt, who had purchased one of his works, heard about his case and intervened, getting her husband to grant him a pardon. Herbert Yates, who was the head of Republic Studios, gave him steady acting work in a lot of "B" westerns and serials. Your thread, Eve!

My problem posting is that after clicking the Post Message button, I can't leave the screen and return to the forum unless I call up another internet session. Then I find that my message posted and I shut down the first session and continue with the next one.

  3. Thanks. Do you know me? I started as an actress in silent films, but I had a very unremarkable career in that medium, maybe because my rather distinctive voice could not be heard. It wasn't until the mid-thirties that I finally landed some plum roles, beginning with one in a John Ford picture. I followed that up with one for Frank Capra in a very well received film. I did a few more for Capra. all rather notable. I did a picture for George Stevens that garnered me an Oscar nomination. Two years later, I quit movies for a while when my contract ran out. It was rumored that I ran through the studio lot shouting "I'm Free, I'm Free". I would return a few years later in a Billy Wilder film, and a few years later I worked for Stevens again in what would be my final film. I was good at what I did, but I didn't enjoy Hollywood. The work was okay, but the lack of privacy eventually got to me and I felt that I had to get out. I tried to make a comeback years later in television, but my series was cancelled after half a season. By the way, I turned down the Donna Reed role in "It's a Wonderful Life". That was probably not a good career move. Do you know me?

  4. Thanks, Eve. Can anyone name the actor who, early in his career, was jailed and faced deportation because he was an illegal immigrant? He was saved by a studio chief who gave him steady work as an actor, and he was pardoned by Franklin D. Roosevelt through the intervention of first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
