Just bumping this thread up.  It had seemingly fallen into oblivion.

  2. The song is "The Windmills Of Your Mind" from the 1968 film "The Thomas Crown Affair".  Music was by Michel Legrand with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.  It was sung in the original score by Noel Harrison and it won the Oscar for best original song that year.  Curiously, the previous year's best song was "Talk To The Animals" from "Dr. Doolittle" and it was sung by Rex Harrison, the father of Noel.

Here is Noel Harrison with the song:

  3. This question may sound familiar.  Two crime fighting shows started in the same year and on the same TV network, although one of them switched networks for it's third season.  Each show involved a highly skilled elite crime fighting team of men that was hand-picked by their leader.  The leader in each show was played by a movie star from the golden age.  One had been a major star as a leading man and the other had been both a leading man and second lead for some time.  One of the crime-fighting teams worked for a city, while the other one worked for the federal government.

Can you name the two TV shows and their stars?

  4. Victor Laszlo is Paul Henreid in Casablanca.

Judith Traherne is Bette Davis in Dark Victory.

Senator Joseph Paine is Claude Rains in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

    The movie is Deception.

  5. Thanks Princess and Peebs.  So far they are all correct, although Dean Stockwell is #18, not #19.  There are still plenty of others to identify.  I know I've posted some of them previously.  If you look back enough pages, you may find a few of them.

  6. It's been a while since we've had child actors and actresses in this thread.  All of these youngsters worked in the thirties and forties.  How many can you name?

  9.  Very good, Starlit.  The two became lifelong friends and were charter members of what was referred to as the "Irish Mafia" in Hollywood.  The group included Spencer Tracy, and Frank McHugh.

  10. Two actors first worked together in a movie in 1934.  They worked together several times over the next decade or so.  Then there was a long gap until they were in the same movie together, this time in 1981, some forty-seven years after their first pairing.  Who are the actors, and for bonus points, what were their first and last films together?

  11. Very good everyone.  We have them all now.  Isn't it amazing that all of these shows were made more than fifty years ago, some more than sixty years ago, and many have not been shown in reruns for many years, yet we still instantly remember the shows and characters as soon as we see their faces?  I guess that since we saw these folks in our homes every week for a long period, it's almost like they were a part of our lives.  By the way, if you have COZI-TV or ANT-TV (Antenna-TV) in your area, Some of these shows are still shown.  "The Joey Bishop Show" is on ANT-TV weekday mornings around 7:30.  ANT-TV also carries "Hazel"on Saturday mornings around 8:00.  I also have seen "McHale's Navy" on one of them.

Here's Joe Besser with Bud and Lou:

Thanks to all who participated.  Lavender got the most so she gets the next turn.

  12. All correct so far.  Don DeFore also played neighbor Thorny Thornberry on "Ozzie And Harriet".  Joe Besser was one of the Three Stooges at one time, replacing Shemp, who had died.  When the Stooges were to go on a personal appearance tour, his wife was very ill, so he dropped out of the group and was replaced by Curly Joe DeRita.

A few hints:  #3 played the girlfriend of the star, #4 played the daughter of the star, #10 and #11 were in service comedies, and #12 was a snooty rich guy in their respective sitcoms.

  13.   Claire Trevor had to sing in front of the whole cast in "Key Largo".  She was so nervous that she was given several drinks to help her get through it.  She was supposed to be a drunken gangster's moll, so the booze fit the occasion.  During World War II, while entertaining troops, star Humphrey Bogart's wife at the time, Mayo Methot, decided to sing a song while visibly intoxicated.  It could be that Bogey remembered that and suggested the idea of giving Claire Trevor some drinks.

  14. Moving on.

Here are photos of actors and actresses who were regulars or had recurring roles in vintage TV shows.  Some were on more than one show.  Can you identify them, the character that they played, and the show where they played that character?  If they were in more than one show, only one role and show will suffice.

  15. I agree with Lavender and Princess. We don't need to alter this thread.  There is plenty of material to choose from when looking back to the fifties, sixties, and seventies.  I realized that some of the names from the last question were from the eighties, but most were from an earlier period, so I didn't bring it up.  When the OP started this thread, it was like a breath of fresh air to some of us veteran posters.  There are so many endless, repetitive, and mindless list threads that it's hard to even find the threads where you actually have to think in asking and answering questions that others of your generation have posted.  Maybe those of us who participate in the Retro thread are a bit older than some other posters, but we appreciate the chance to test our memories of our formative years.  Plus, there are definite generation gap questions when it comes to nostalgia.  The other night on "Jeopardy", a clue asked which western star rode a horse called "Buttermilk".  One contestant guessed Annie Oakley while the other two were silent.  I was actually yelling "Dale Evans!" at the TV.  I asked that question to a group of seniors and they all said "Dale Evans" in unison.

If someone wants to start a separate nostalgia thread for the eighties, nineties, and beyond, they are certainly welcome to do so.

I'll be back later with my next question.

  16. This is a very good question, Lav.  Then actor Richard Quine appeared as Frank Lippincott in the 1942 non-musical film "My Sister Eileen".  He would later become a director and direct the 1955 musical remake with the same title.  In the remake, the role of Frank was played by Bob Fosse, who would also go on to become a director.

Richard Quine played Judy Garland's brother in "For Me And My Gal" in 1942.  That was Gene Kelly's first movie.  Gene would also later become a director.

  17. 6.  Rollo Larson was Fred Sanford's friend on "Sanford And Son".  He was played by Nathaniel Taylor.

    14.  Addy Wilson was Nell's friend on "Gimmee A Break"  She was played by Telma Hopkins from "Tony Orlando And Dawn".

    18.  Rosie Hammaker was Hazel's friend on "Hazel".  She was played by Maudie Prickett, who specialized in playing nosy neighbors and busybodies.

    19.  Tommy Anderson was the friend of Dennis on "Dennis The Menace".  He was played by young Billy Booth.
