It was silent movie star Aileen Pringle. (eye + lean + prim + gull).

    Next: Person.

”____ of all trades” + ___-hole + to have mirth + male progeny.

I would have never gotten Aileen Pringle from those clues.   For Pringle, if you had said "potato chip that comes in a can", that may have worked.  The next one is Jackie Gleason.

  2. Manuel is Spencer Tracy in Captains Courageous.

Vantine is Jean Harlow in Red Dust.

Doc is William Powell in Mr. Roberts.

Judge Margaret Turner is Myrna Loy in The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer.

    The movie is Libeled Lady.

Ellie Andrews and Elwood P. Dowd are pursued by Lieutenant Guild.

  3. Yes, "General Spanky" was Our Gang's only feature length film.  Producer Hal Roach saw that Fox had hits with a couple of Shirley Temple Civil War movies, "The Little Colonel" and "The Littlest Rebel".  He thought he could duplicate their success, but "General Spanky" was not very funny and Roach decided to staye with the shorts format for the gang.  Here is a short clip:

Starlit, you get to post the next one.

  4. Rick Blaine is Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.  Gaye Dawn is Claire Trevor in Key Largo, and Ma Kettle is Marjorie Main in The Egg And I.  The movie is Dead End.

    Next:

Florenz Ziegfeld and his wife, Billie Burke, watch Blondie Bumstead dance in The City By The Bay.

  5. Very good!  We have them all now.  Here is Johnny Preston with "Running Bear".

Here's something that you probably didn't know.  "Running Bear" was written by J.P. Richardson, who also did some of the background vocals.  He was also known as "The Big Bopper" and, of course, he died in that famous plane crash with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens.

Nice work, ladies.  Lavender got the most, so she gets to go next.

  6. The actor in No. 1 is Richard Barthelmess.  This is not from a movie.  Carole Lombard threw a big party at the Venice Pier about 1935 and many stars showed up.

Here is Claudette Colbert with Carole:

  7. I think the woman in #8 is Kathleen Lockhart, wife of Gene and mother of June.  The movie is "Mr. Cinderella".

#3 is, I believe, Marie Prevost, director Frank Capra, and Barbara Stanwyck.  The movie is "Ladies Of Leisure".

#6 is Richard Arlen, Andy Devine, and Mary Treen in "Black Diamonds".

  8. You are correct, Princess.  "Xanadu" in 1980 was Gene's last theatrical movie.

Here is Gene in the alter-ego dance from "Cover Girl".  I think Princess can appreciate how difficult it was to film this.

And here he is with Olivia Newton-John in "Xanadu" in the last number that he choreographed.

Good work, Princess.  Now you get to do a flap ball change right into the next question.

  9. Has everyone stopped humming yet?  So far all answers are correct.  Amazingly, after sixty years or so, the names come quickly to mind.  Well, maybe not #7, #9, and #17.  We used to joke that "Running Bear" was the theme song of streakers.  Any more guesses?

  10. Thanks, Lavender.  I don't know if Donald O'Connor ever kissed Francis the mule, but rumor has it that they did sleep together.

Now, here is a simple question.  What versatile musical performer played characters with the same name in two unrelated musicals, one in the 1940's and one more than thirty-five years later in the early 1980's?

  11. I think it's "There's No Business Like Show Business".  Ethel Merman and Donald O'Connor played mother and son.  They had previously worked together in "Call Me Madam".  Both movies had music by Irving Berlin.  Berlin had worked with Ethel Merman previously on the Broadway show "Annie Get Your Gun" and the Hollywood movie "Alexander's Ragtime Band".  Donald O'Connor's love interest was played by Marilyn Monroe.  At the time, he was also making the "Francis, The Talking Mule" movie series. Here is the kissing scene with Donald and Marilyn:

  12. Let's test your memory of hit songs.  Here is a list of songs that were on the charts from 1956 to 1961.  All you have to do is name the artist or group that had the big hit record with that song that year.  Remember that some songs were done later by other artists, but we are looking for the original big hit.  Some will be easy, some not so much.  See how many you can get without looking them up.  If you don't remember them, ask an old person.  That's what I did in constructing this list.

    1956

    1. Why Do Fools Fall In Love?

    2. My Prayer

    3. Hot Diggity

  14. OK, Lavender.  I made a mistake on Luke McCoy's number, but I believe you made one on #4.  The show was "Family" and Meredith Baxter played the oldest daughter of the Lawrence family, who was a divorcee named Nancy Maitland, so her character was Nancy Lawrence Maitland, not Nancy Maitland Lawrence.  Meredith Baxter was the daughter of Whitney Blake, who was Dorothy Baxter in #1.  Confusing?

    6. Det. Les Clark - Regis Toomey on "Burke's Law"

    14. Andamo - Ross Martin on "Mr. Lucky"

    19.  Linda Williams - Little Angela Cartwright on "The Danny Thomas Show"

  16. It almost sounds like "My Cousin Vinny", except that it was two young men who got in trouble.  A cousin of one of them was a  lawyer who came to the southern town to defend them.  He brought his girlfriend along.  She was played by Marisa Tomei, who won a supporting actress Oscar for the role.  Her character did not get in trouble in the movie.  The judge was played by Fred Gwynne, who had earlier played Herman Munster on TV, a clone of the Frankenstein monster.

  17. Yes, believe it or not, Joshua Logan, who directed to show on Broadway, actually wanted Elizabeth Taylor for the role of Nellie, even though she was not a musical performer.  Can you see her doing the "Honey Bun" number?  Mary Martin, who starred in the show on Broadway, was forty-five and considered too old for the role.  According to IMDB, besides Liz and Doris, he also considered Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn, and Ginger Rogers, and Ginger was older than Mary Martin.

Here are some interesting clips of Mitzi Gaynor in a screen test for the part:

    Lavender, you're up next.
