  1. You're both wrong. It is opera singer Rise Stevens, and her voice is anything but deep. She was in "The Chocolate Soldier" with Nelson Eddy, and later in "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby. Here is the short film, which is available on YouTube. It's about eleven minutes long and "America The Beautiful" comes just before the end.
  2. "Miss Otis Regrets" by Cole Porter. It was sung, sort of, by Monty Woolley in "Night And Day". Next: A song with the word "Wonderful" in the title.
  3. Yes, Princess. It was sung by Bob Hope in "The Paleface", but it was also done by Bob, Roy Rogers, and Jane Russell in "Son Of Paleface". Oh yes, it was also performed by the songwriters, Livingston and Evans, in "Sunset Boulevard". For this clip, we have two performances. Nice work, Princess. It's your thread now.
  4. The black and white film must be "I Confess" with Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter. It was filmed and set in Quebec City in Canada. Clift was a "method actor" who drank a lot during production. Hitchcock tried to get fellow cast mate Karl Malden, another alum of The Actors Studio, to talk to Clift to get him to stop drinking. He was blowing many lines and that made for many retakes. I don't know what problems that Hitchcock had with Anne Baxter. The other movie may be "Vertigo" with James Stewart and Kim Novak. Although Stewart had worked for Hitchcock several time previously, Hitchcock blamed Stewart for the movie's poor performance at the box office, saying that Stewart was looking "too old". Hitch was also unhappy with Kim Novak when she questioned her motivation for some scenes.
  5. You are correct, Lavender. Barry Gordon has had a very long career, including serving as President of the Screen Actors Guild at one time. Here is his hit record: He was about six years old when he made this recording. Good job, Lavender. It's your turn now.
  6. Thanks, Bagel. Now, this next one should be pretty easy. "My bones denounce the buckboard bounce"
  7. Thanks, Princess. Your question reminded me that there was another well known Christmas song in the 1950's that was recorded by a child actor. It contained the phrase "Somebody snitched on me" that was repeated several times. This song was covered by several singers, but the original vocalist was a child who appeared several times on "The Jack Benny Show" on TV. Can anyone name the song, as well as the youngster who first recorded it?
  8. Could it be Jimmy Boyd? As a youngster, he had a hit record with "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". He had another hit with "Tell Me A Story" with Frankie Laine. In the late 1950's, he had a recurring role as Noreen Corcoran's boyfriend on "Bachelor Father". He appeared in "Inherit The Wind" with Spencer Tracy and "High Time" with Bing Crosby. Oh, and for brownie points, his first wife was actress Yvonne Craig, known to many as "Batgirl" on the TV series "Batman".
  9. A little research finds that #18 is credited as being Piper Laurie in several places, but one place says it's an actress named Leslye, later Leslie, Banning. She made a few movies in the early fifties including "His Kind Of Woman" with Robert Mitchum. I also think #1 is Paula Prentiss. Shutoo, how about a little help with the others?
  10. "I Got Out Of Bed On The Right Side" from "Dangerous When Wet". It was sung by William Demarest, Charlotte Greenwood, Barbara Whiting, Esther Williams, and Donna Corcoran. Is your family like this one? Next: A song sung by six people.
  11. You are Marilyn Knowlden, the "Little Girl In Big Pictures". Marilyn played Claudette Colbert's daughter in "Imitation Of Life". She was Kim in the 1936 version of "Show Boat". She was in "Anthony Adverse" with Fredric March, "Marie Antoinette" with Norma Shearer, and "All This And Heaven Too" with Bette Davis. She's now 93 and still with us.
  12. Very thorough answer, Princess. Yes, the title role of Johnny Tremain was played by a teenage actor named Hal Stalmaster. Luana Patten, as a young child in the 1940's, had been featured in "Song Of The South" and "So Dear To My Heart". After "West Side Story", where his singing was dubbed, Richard Beymer was probably best remembered for "Twin Peaks". I really wish that TCM would show "Johnny Tremain" on Independence Day. They show "The Scarlet Coat' and "1776" every year. Hear are our three young stars in this clip: And in case any of you have forgotten the Swamp Fox song, here it is: Nice job, Princess. You're up next.
  13. On this Independence Day, a theatrical movie about the revolutionary war is not being shown on TCM today, much to my chagrin. It was made by Disney and featured a young actor who would later star in an Oscar winning musical. It also featured a young woman who had been a child actress in some earlier Disney classics. The star of the movie was a young man who did not have a lengthy acting career, but he did appear in a Disney mini-series on television that was also set during the American revolution. Can you name the movie, the TV mini-series and the actors and actress that I referenced?
  14. The opening strains of Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue". Here it is in a somewhat surreal presentation from "King Of Jazz". Next: A musical number featuring either Benny Goodman or Artie Shaw.
  15. It's "Le Jazz Hot" from "Victor/Victoria", with music by Henry Mancini and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. It was sung by Julie Andrews. Of course, the movie was directed by her husband, Blake Edwards.
  16. #9 - Anita Page #11 - Leila Hyams #15 - Vera Miles #18 - Piper Laurie, I think
  17. Shame on me for neglecting this thread. #9 in my previous post was Carole Landis. In this latest post: #2 - Joan Crawford #3 - Dawn Wells from Gilligan's Island ? #5 - Esther Williams #6 - Joan Blondell #7 - Gloria DeHaven #12 - Ann Rutherford ? #16 - Jayne Mansfield #4 is dancer Zoe Dell Lantis with Jack Benny and Betty Grable. I found the picture on pinterest.
  18. Here are a few: "Never Bathe On A Saturday" is an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show". Laura gets her big toe caught in a bathtub faucet in a hotel that she and Rob are staying in. The bathroom door is locked and he can't get it open. "A House Divided" is an episode of "The Munsters". Herman and Grandpa have a disagreement and they draw a line down the middle of the house that neither one is allowed to cross. "Job Switching" is that classic "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy and Ethel get jobs in a candy factory. "The Pickle Story" is an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show". Aunt Bee wants to enter her homemade pickles in the county fair and no one has the heart to tell her that they taste awful. "The Subject Was Noses" is an episode of "The Brady Bunch" where Marcia gets hit in the face by a football and her nose gets very swollen.
  19. Very good, Arsan. I heard that on the radio recently when they announced that it was Maureen Stapleton's birthday, but they didn't say who the others were. My first thought was Margaret Sullavan, but although she was Oscar nominated, she did not win. Arsan, it's your turn now.
  20. I'm going to be away for about four days, so I'll tell you that the initials are MS.
  21. Four Oscar winning actresses had the same initials. Can you name all four? One of them had, or would have had, a birthday very recently.
  22. Very good, Lavender. Jerry Reed's show was called "The Jerry Reed When You're Hot You're Hot Hour". Shields And Yarnell did a lot of characters, but their most famous was a robot couple called "The Clinkers". Lavender got the most so she get's the thread.
  23. Joan Bennett played the part of Amy in RKO's 1933 version of "Little Women". Elizabeth Taylor played that same part in MGM's 1949 version. They played mother and daughter in "Father Of The Bride" and "Father's Little Dividend". Joan Bennett was blonde in her early career. Liz was blonde for her turn as Amy. Here they are in "Father's Little Dividend".
