  1. Well, you're both right, as usual.  Thank you Princess and Lavender.  Pat Hitchcock was several of her father's movies,  as well as several episodes of his TV series.  A few years ago, one of our posters here who used the screen name "The Lady Eve", conducted an interview with Edna May Wonacott, who played young Ann in "Shadow Of A Doubt".  She was just a few years younger than Pat Hitchcock and the two girls became good friends during that production.

Here is Pat as Chubby Bannister.

And here she is in "Strangers On A Train".

And finally, with her husband, her children, and her parents.

I would say that she resembles her mother.

Apparently Princess got her answer in first, so she gets the thread.

  2. Thanks, Princess.  In one of Hitchcock's movies, an actress played a character named Chubby Bannister.  Can you name the actress and the movie?  She was also in other movies for Hitch.  Can you name them?

  3. Would it be "Frenzy"?  That was one of Hitchcock's later films.  His father had been what's known as a greengrocer.  That is, he managed a wholesale produce market, selling fruits and vegetables.  In the movie, the villain, played by Barry Foster, has that same job in an area of London called Covent Garden.  In the movie, Hitch wanted to make his cameo appearance as a dead body near the produce market, but he changed his mind and appeared as a bystander in the crowd when a body is discovered.

You might enjoy this movie trailer.  I think Hitch did.

  4.  There's no doubt that Lavender and Shutoo really know their stuff.  All are correct so far, including #11.  Yes, Joan was set to co-star with Bette again, but they did not get along and Joan left the picture and was replaced by Olivia de Havilland.

#7 is still unsolved.  The man on the left was only about twenty-two when he made this movie.  The woman was already a veteran of more than fifteen years of movie making, the previous four or five as a top star.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again, if you showed these pictures to a  hundred random people on the street, how many would be able to identify everyone, let alone name the movies?  I suspect not many at all.

  5. These photos are publicity shots for various movies.  Some will be easy, some maybe not so much.  Can you identify not only all of the people in the photo, but also the movie that they are making?

If you can't solve #10 then you probably don't belong on these boards.

Here's a bonus shot.  This is not from "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?".

  7. Yes, Princess.  It was Lee Aaker, who was a very busy child actor in those years.  Besides "The Adventures Of Rin Tin Tin" on TV, he was in several movies including "Hondo" where John Wayne plays sort of a Shane-like role model for the boy.

As a young man, he appeared on an episode of Mr. Novak, but his acting career was almost over.

Nice work, Princess.  You're up next.

  8. Yes, Lavenderblue is correct, and thank you to Princess for her input.  If Fred MacMurray had landed the role of Eliot Ness, he probably would not have been in "The Apartment" and probably not in several Disney movies of the early sixties.  And yes, Eddie Albert was the first choice for the father on "My Three Sons".

Fred MacMurray had a unique deal on "My Three Sons".  All of his scenes for the season would be shot before the rest of the shows were filmed.  That meant that the scripts all had to be completed before shooting began and any scenes where Fred interacted with other cast members or guest stars would be shot then.  Later those guest stars were brought back to finish filming their episode.  The boys playing the sons were given haircuts every week so that there would be no continuity problems.  This arrangement gave Fred time to do other projects, like those Disney movies.

Excellent answer as always, Lavender.  You're up next.

  9. Thanks, Lav.

A veteran actor was the first choice of producers for the lead in "The Untouchables" TV series, but he turned it down and Robert Stack was given the part.  Not long after, that same veteran actor was given the lead role in what would become a long running sitcom.  However, this time he wasn't the producer's first choice.  The first choice was another veteran actor who turned it down to concentrate on his movie career.  A few years later, this other veteran actor would be starring in a sitcom.  Can you name the two actors involved, as well as their TV sitcoms?

  10. Thank you, Princess.  Yes, Albert Bassermann played a diplomat named Van Meer, who was killed right in front of Joel McCrea, or was he?  Bassermann was a German actor who did not speak English.  Rather than having his lines dubbed, Hitchcock went with the phonetic system, knowing that the character was supposed to have a thick foreign acccent.  Bassermann was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar.

This method had been used for some years in Hollywood.  In the thirties, Laurel and Hardy often filmed a Spanish language version of their comedies and they had to learn their lines phonetically.  Can you imagine someone else providing their voices?  I can't.

Princess, I'm glad that you liked the question.  Now you get to post the next one.

  11. Let's wrap this one up.

#4,  Peter Sands was played by Don Porter in the TV series "Private Secretary".  The show starred Ann Sothern.  When it went into syndicated reruns, it was called "Susie", after her character.

#7.  Cinnamon Carter was played by Barbara Bain in "Mission Impossible".  She was the only female member of the IMF.  In real life, she was married to fellow cast member Martin Landau.

  12. As you probably know, in "Blackmail", Hitchcock used Joan Barry to dub the voice of Anny Ondra, who had a thick foreign accent.  Some time later, he encountered a similar problem with an actor who spoke little or no English.  This time Hitchcock had the actor learn to say his lines phonetically.  The actor was so good at it that he was Oscar nominated for the role.  Can you name the actor and the movie?

  13. Dame Judi Dench - (Or possibly Dame Judi Dinch?)  Very creative, Lonesome.

  14. Princess did a great job.  I think I can help with a few more.

#1  Helping to ring in 1932 is Thelma Todd.  She was nicknamed "Hot Toddy".

#2  This is the lovely Leila Hyams.  You may remember her from the movie "Freaks".

Image result for leila hyams freaks

#3 is none other than Tina Louise.  You know her as Ginger from "Gilligan's Island".

#5 would be dancer Vera-Ellen in her pre-anorexic days.

#6 sure looks like Bonita Granville about the time she was making her Nancy Drew movies.

#7 is, I believe, Gene Tierney.

#10 looks like Martha Hyer.  Right before Christmas I saw her in "Night Of The Grizzly" with Clint Walker.

#11  The cute blonde actress with big eyes from 1929 looks like Alice White.

#14 is MGM starlet Ann Rutherford.

The others are tougher.  #12 looks like a young, blonde Lucille Ball on the right.  She was quite blonde in many of her pictures in the mid-1930's.  I didn't recognize the woman on the left, but using Google Images and phrases like "Hollywood Actresses In New Years Pin-ups", I found the photo.  The other actress is Billie Seward, who was in some "B" movies and westerns in the thirties.

A similar search turned up #13.  That's a young, pre-blonde Diana Dors who, strangely enough, was in a 1948 movie called "The Calendar".
