  1. Yes, I am Frank McHugh.  Frank was seen quite a few times on TCM in the last few months as he was a contract player at Warner Bros. in the thirties and appeared several times with Stars Of The Month Glenda Farrell and Dick Powell.

I mentioned his unique laugh.  You may hear it a few times in this clip:

Good work, Drvannor.  You get to go next.

  2. Here are a few of the tougher ones.

#1  Harvey Griffin - Howard Smith - "Hazel"  Don't confuse him with newsman Howard K. Smith

#2  Myrna Gibbons - Rose Marie - "The Doris Day Show"

#6  White Fang/Black Tooth - 1965-1967.  The characters were played by an actor named Frank Nastasi on "The Soupy Sales Show".  I knew the show but I had to look up the actor's name.  Earlier, from 1959 to 1962, the part was played by Clyde Adler.

#8  Hannah Cord - Ruth Warrick - "Peyton Place".  You may remember her from "Citizen Kane".

#10  Det. Adam Flint - Paul Burke - "The Naked City"

Maybe someone else can finish the list.

  3. Do you know me?  I was born into a show business family from Pennsylvania and I spent my youth touring in vaudeville and theatrical stock companies.  I eventually landed in New York where I appeared in a few Broadway productions.  That led to Hollywood where I began my movie career in the early 1930's.  I was a versatile performer, but I didn't possess leading man looks, so I was cast in a variety of supporting roles in all types of movies, including comedies, dramas, musicals, and even westerns.  I spent years under contract at Warner Bros. and I appeared with just about every star at the studio, including Cagney, Bogart, and Flynn.  I became good friends with James Cagney and appeared with him in eleven films.  He and I, along with Pat O'Brien and Spencer Tracy, were so close that we became known in Hollywood as "The Irish Mafia".  I was also known for my unique laugh, a sort of slow, high-pitched whine.  I appeared in a couple of movies with Bing Crosby, and later in a television series with him.  My career lasted well into the television era.  Now, do you know me?

  5. Thanks, Lavender.  You got them all.  I can't believes that no one else responded.  I guess that means that either we are the only ones on these boards old enough to remember these shows, which I doubt, or others don't want to answer because it might reveal their approximate ages.  All they have to say is what I have said many times.  I'm not that old.  I heard about these shows from my parents and grandparents.  Yeah, that'll work.

Nice work, Lavender.  The thread is now all yours.

  6. Don DeFore -  Nice clues!  I'm glad that I play golf.

Remember, you don't have to wait for confirmation before posting the next clues.  If your answer is incorrect, you will be told, believe me.

  9. John Wayne may have had his singing dubbed a few times.  Watch the clip and tell us what you think.

Did you recognize Gabby Hayes and Cecilia Parker?  Cecilia played Marian Hardy in the Hardy family series for MGM.

Next:  A song from a real singer that was actually dubbed because that singer's voice was not right for the character.

  11. We have them all now.  Thanks to all who participated.  Obviously, there are many songwriters in the history of the musical, but these relatively few people did so much for both stage and movie musicals that it is hard to imagine what the American musical would have been like without them.  As the Princess of Tap would probably say, they wrote the Good songs.

Let's ask SCSU1975 to take the thread for the next round.

  12. You got your Madges mixed up, Lavender.  Flora MacMichael was played by Madge Blake.

Here are some hints for the others.

#7 probably should have been listed as Officer Frank Smith,  The character was on a series for several years, but later was replaced by a character named Bill Gannon.

#8 "Ikky" Mudd helped a certain Captain round up bad guys.  They also had help from kids all around the country who were members of the Captain's Secret Squadron and thus had secret decoder rings that they could get through the show's sponsor, Ovaltine.

#9 Captain Manzini, or is it Mancini, was a character on a show that featured Jerry Van Dyke.  The actor who played the captain also did a series of commercials for Doritos.

  13. I believe they would be Henry Stephenson and C. Aubrey Smith.  They were both in "Little Lord Fauntleroy" in 1936.  In 1933, Stephenson played Mr. Laurence in "Little Women".  Smith played Mr. Laurence in the 1949 version.  It was his last movie.

Henry Stephenson Picture  C. Aubrey Smith Picture

     Henry Stephenson                       C. Aubrey Smith

  14. Correct so far, Lavender.  Obviously, these are composers and lyricists.  These folks wrote music for movies and stage shows, but they also wrote popular songs for the general public, as well.

#4, much like Irving Berlin, wrote both music and lyrics.

#5 wrote worked with many lyricists, including Oscar Hammerstein.

The two men in #7 actually appeared in the first musical to win a best picture Oscar.

The two in #8 also appeared in a musical that featured Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler.

There are several lyricists that I didn't post photos of who worked with several of these composers.  They include Johnny Mercer, Mack Gordon, Dorothy Fields, and Jimmy McHugh.

  15. Jean Adair - She was in "Arsenic And Old Lace" and not a whole lot more.
