  1. Two young women, early in their careers, appeared together in a Broadway musical.  Some years later, a major Hollywood studio made a film version of the musical, but they combined the original parts of the two women into one role so that one of their contract players could play the part.  Can you name the show and the three women involved?

  2. I think it's "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", who was given that name because she was a survivor of the Titanic sinking.  The part was played by Thelma Ritter in "Titanic" (1953), Tucker McGuire in "A Night To Remember" (1958), and Kathy Bates in "Titanic" (1997).  The musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" (1964) starred Debbie Reynolds and was a film adaptation of a 1960 Broadway musical that had starred Tammy Grimes.

  4. I'll make it a bit easier.  Here is the complete verse:

    A long time ago
    A million years BC
    The best things in life
    Were absolutely free
    But no one appreciated
A sky that was always blue
    And no one congratulated
A moon that was always new
So it was planned that they would vanish now and then
And you must pay before you get them back again
That's what storms were made for
And you shouldn't be afraid for .....

another song with "easy" in the title

Lila Dixon was played by Virginia Dale.  Marjorie Reynolds played Linda Mason.  With Fred Astaire's character, Ted Hanover, losing Linda Mason and ending up with Lila Dixon, you might say that he crossed the "Mason/Dixon Line".

Keith Carradine wrote and performed "I'm Easy" for the movie "Nashville".  It won an Oscar for best song.

You are correct, Lavender.  David Soul actually married Bobby Sherman's ex-wife.  Bobby left show biz and became a Los Angeles policeman.

Here is Bobby with his adoring audience:

And here is David Soul with one of his hits:

Good work, Lavender.  The thread is all yours.

Well Princess, while your temperature is still a little high, here is a question about a two more heartthrobs.  In the late sixties, a young singer became a regular on a TV series, playing the brother of a handsome blonde actor on a show that featured an actress from Hollywood's golden age.  The series, set in the 1800's, only lasted a couple of years.

The blonde actor then had a major role in a movie playing a murderous rogue cop.  This led to a new, more popular mid-seventies TV series in which he co-starred as an undercover cop.  He also had a singing career for several years.

The dark-haired singer from the first show was so popular that his face graced the cover of many fan magazines like "Tiger Beat".  At that time, the magazines also featured Donny Osmond and David Cassidy.  As a matter of fact, this man was once a guest star on "The Partridge Family".  After a few more failed TV series, he got out of show business completely.

Can you name these two men as well as the TV shows?

  9. I think it was "Peter Pan".  The play had first been presented in the early 1900's and had been revived several times.  Traditionally, the part of Peter Pan was played by a woman.  In 1950, the emotional star, Jean Arthur, starred in the show with Boris Karloff playing Captain Hook.

    Jean Arthur

The show was revived again in 1954 with added songs and the role of Peter Pan was played by Mary Martin.  It was Mary Martin and her cast that were featured in the live TV production first telecast in 1955.

Jean Arthur's understudy, I believe, was an actress named Barbara Baxley.  She did some television work and a few movies.  She may be best known for playing Sally Field's mother in the movie "Norma Rae".

  11. Could it be Vince Edwards?  He became famous as TV's "Ben Casey"  He had previously starred in a movie called "Murder By Contract".  He had actually been a singer before he became an actor and the TV fame helped revive his singing career.  Here is one of his recordings:

He also made an appearance on "The Mike Douglas Show".

Another TV doctor at that time was Richard Chamberlain, who was Dr. Kildare on NBC while Ben Casey was on ABC.  Chamberlain also had a recording career for a while.

  12. Barbara Stanwyck

Clever last clue, Polecat.  I found the passage:

Dickon curved his wide smiling mouth.

"It's as wick as you or me," he said; and Mary remembered that Martha had told her that "wick" meant "alive" or "lively."

"I'm glad it's wick!" she cried out in her whisper. "I want them all to be wick. Let us go round the garden and count how many wick ones there are."

  14. Very good so far, everyone.  We still need #7, #17. and #20.  All three of them, along with George E. Stone and Lyle Talbot, were featured in "The Dragon Murder Case" during an evening of Philo Vance mysteries on TCM recently.  Two of them were also in "The Kennel Murder Case" that same night.  #20 was a leading lady in many films, as well as a supporting actress to big stars like Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck.

  15. You are correct, Princess.  Paul Sullivan is the name of the boy who played Wally.  If you don't mind breaks for advertisements, here is that pilot episode:

If you watched it, you saw some familiar faces.  Richard Deacon played the manager of the local milk company.  He would later play Fred Rutherford, (Lumpy's dad), in the series.  His secretary was played by Diane Brewster, who would later play Beaver's teacher, Miss Canfield.  She would later be replaced in the series by Sue Randall as Miss Landers.  The milk company boss in Chicago was played by Joseph Kearns, who would play Mr. Wilson on "Dennis The Menace".  The boy who told Beaver about the contest was played by Harry Shearer, who is now probably best known for his voice work on "The Simpsons".

Good work, Princess.  It's your turn now.
