  1. The song is "My Wonderful One, Let's Dance". It was featured in the 1940 movie "Two Girls On Broadway" that featured George Murphy, Joan Blondell, and Lana Turner. It was sung by George Murphy and later in the picture he danced to it with Lana Turner. I don't have a clip of Lana dancing, but I do have George Murphy singing and dancing. The movie is a remake of "The Broadway Melody", a 1929 picture that was the first musical to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Let's see if anyone else will join in. Here are some hints for some of the tough ones. #2 once played a character name Toothpick Charlie #7 played the coroner in some of the Philo Vance pictures. #11 was an Oscar winner #17 played the District Attorney in some of the Philo Vance pictures #19 was a singer who was featured in many production numbers in musicals
  3. When I joined the TCM message boards ten years ago, I found a fun little thread that some of us had a lot of fun with for a few years. Unfortunately, many of the members left the boards over time and the participation in the game declined. Now that we have a lot of new folks, I thought it might be a good time to revive it. We'll call it "The Name Game". The first poster gives sound-alike clues to parts of a well known celebrity's name. For instance: To Steal + Ernie's Friend On "Sesame Street" + A Person Who Makes Clothes That's a simple one. The answers would be : Rob + Bert + Tailor or Robert Taylor The one who solved the clues would post that answer and then leave clues to another name. Remember, there are two parts to the game, solving the puzzle and leaving clues to a new name for someone else to solve. You do not need to wait for confirmation of your answer. If you are wrong, that person who posted the clues will let you know. You can make them simple or you can be a bit more clever and give clues that may require a little knowledge, or possibly a bit of research. Here is an old favorite: Marilyn Monroe Starred In "_____ Stop", + What Two Boys Stole In "Going My Way" + One Time Boxer Two-_____ Tony Galento The answer would be Bus + Turkey+ Ton. If you separate the syllables, you have Bus + Tur+ Key+ Ton or Buster Keaton I find that clues involving movies, TV, songs, i.e. pop culture make the most effective clues. Let's give it a try. I'll post the first one: Groucho's Show "You _____ Your Life" + "____ And Sympathy" + Linda _____ Played Sue Ellen On "Dallas" + He Played The German Ship's Captain In "The African Queen"
  4. Many TV series start out as pilot films that are presented to a network for consideration. Often, a lengthy period may elapse before the network decides to buy the series. In that time, actors from the pilot may have become unavailable for any number of reasons. That's what happened when the parts of Ward and Wally from "Leave It to Beaver" were recast after the pilot was sold. Can you name the original actor who played Ward in the pilot? Bonus points if you can name the boy who originally played Wally.
  5. Today. December 7th," A day that will live in infamy", is also my 10th anniversary on these TCM message boards. It's only fitting that I post something, so I decided to revive this thread. After watching Glenda Farrell as November's SOTM, a night of Philo Vance mysteries, and some of Dick Powell's early movies in December, I noticed a lot of actors and actresses appearing numerous times in these Warner Bros. productions. Here are some of them. How many can you identify? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. Some are easy, some not so easy. They all were active at Warner Bros. and other studios in the 1930's. If you don't recognize them, watch more Dick Powell movies this month. Some will certainly appear.

  7. The remake featured a comedy team. The leading lady of the remake was in a holiday themed movie recently shown on TCM.

  9. Our Star Of The Month, Dick Powell, with an assist from Alice Faye, sang this in "On The Avenue": It was written by Irving Berlin. Next: A song about rain and not "Singin' In The Rain" or "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head".

  11. The song is "The Lady In Red" from "In Caliente". The song was done by Winifred "Wini" Shaw with an assist from Judy Canova. Busby Berkeley created a rather lavish production number around the song, as you will see in this clip: Wini Shaw was in several musical numbers at Warner's in the thirties, but, in my opinion, she was underused as an actress.

  13. I found photos of their 1955 Pontiac Star Chief . It looked pretty good before they packed for the trip, but then... Here are a few more answers: 3. Little Ricky became friends with Bruce Ramsay, but his best friend in Connecticut was named Billy Thompson. 5. Fred's partner was Barney Kurtz. Their act was "Mertz And Kurtz. 9. Cousin Ernie Ford was from Bent Fork, Tennessee. 10. Little Ricky had a dog named Fred. I don't know of another dog. 17. On Ricky's sweater, there was a big "H" on the front, and "Universidad de la Habana" on the back. Fred's sweater said "Golden Gloves: 1909". 19. Tommy and Jimmy were turtles, Mildred and Charles were fish. Today, November 30th, is Lucy and Desi's wedding anniversary. They were married November 30, 1940.
  14. I promise that this will be the last time that I bring up this circumstance. There were yet another pair of movies where the roles of the leading man and leading lady from the original movie were switched for the remake. This time the original was a comedy, but not a musical. The lead actor had already been an Oscar winner. The lead actress had already been an Oscar nominee. Some years later, the story was remade with a different title. This time the role played by the leading man in the original was now played by a woman, and the role played by the leading lady in the original was now played by a man. Oh yes, this remake is a musical. Can you name the two movies and the stars?
  15. The first thing that comes to mind is Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas" in "Holiday Inn" (1942), "Blue Skies" (1946), and "White Christmas" (1954). Here is the first one, with Marjorie Reynolds.
  16. Very good, Lavender. Those are the movies and the stars. Finger Rogers? Sounds like a piano player. "Twenty Million Sweethearts" was a different sort of musical for Warner Bros. during that period. There were no chorus girls and no big production numbers. Yes, the story is not nearly as frantically paced as the Busby Berkeley musicals of the time. "My Dream Is Yours" was meant to showcase the talents of young Doris Day, who had only started making movies the previous year. Lee Bowman was a curious choice for the male singer, as he was not a singer at all and had to have his singing voice dubbed. Jack Carson was cast as the fast talking agent. In a novel change, he gets the girl at the end. "I'll String Along With You" became a very popular song for composers Harry Warren and Al Dubin. Here it is: Here is Doris Day's version: I'll string along with you, Lavender. The thread is yours.
  17. This 1930's musical was remade a number of years later, but with the genders of the leads reversed. The role played by the male star in the original movie was played by the female star in the remake, and the same went for the female star's role in the original being played by the male star in the remake. The male star of the first movie is one of this year's SOTM's. Does this sound familiar? Those clues from the previous question fit this next one. In the first movie, a fast talking talent scout discovers a singing waiter and tries to get him a job as a radio crooner. A young lady who is already a singer at the radio station helps him get hired. They fall in love, but she loses her own job in the process. Fast forward more than a decade for the remake. Now, another fast talking agent discovers a young lady who has a nice singing voice working in a jukebox factory. His male client, although handsome and well known, is somewhat arrogant and is losing his radio job. The agent has to work extra hard to make a success of the young woman, who thinks she is falling for the male star. Everything works out in the end, of course. A song that became a well known standard in it's day is featured in both of these movies. Can you name both musicals and the stars of each? Can you name that hit song?
  18. Yes, "You Don't Have To Know The Language" was a big hit in 1947. "Road To Rio" was the Andrews Sisters' last movie together.   19. You are correct, Shutoo. The host was Allen Ludden. Here they are along with Lucy's second husband, Gary Morton. At this stage the kids had not done much TV work. Nice going, Shutoo. You're up next.
  20. The movie was set primarily in South America. The male singer was a major musical star. The women in the number with him were also famous singers. They recorded many songs with the male star over the years.

The first movie is 1937's "On The Avenue" which starred Dick Powell and Alice Faye as musical stars who satirize, (actually lampoon), the life of the world's richest woman, played by Madeline Carroll. She goes to Dick Powell and asks him to drop the skit from the show. He agrees to drop it because they are falling for one another. A jealous Alice Faye puts it back in and makes it worse than before. The remake from 1960 is "Let's Make Love", where Marilyn Monroe and Frankie Vaughan do the same thing to billionaire Yves Montand. He joins the show under an assumed name and, of course, falls for Marilyn. He also gets lessons in comedy, singing, and dancing from Milton Berle, Bing Crosby, and Gene Kelly. The big song from Marilyn is "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", a Cole Porter song that was a big hit for Mary Martin.
  22. Sorry, Starlit. It wasn't Frank and it was in a different movie. However, the singer was a popular male singer who teamed up with a group of women to sing this song. It was also made in the same general time period as "Take Me Out To The Ballgame".
  23. Thanks, Princess. I sort of recall that number with Maurice Chevalier. I think it was kind of cute. Wait a minute! You can judge for yourself. Here it is: I'm reminded of the fact that Lucille Ball's children played her children on "Here's Lucy", but they had earlier appeared with their mother on a popular game show. Can you name the show and the host?

  25. Yes, #6 is Raquel Torres. Thanks to everyone for their guesses. I said some might not be easy. I'll give you #3. It's Swedish born actress Anna Q, Nilsson. She was once a major star in silent movies, but when talking pictures came around she was already in her fifties with a Swedish accent, so she was relegated to supporting roles until her last picture in the 1950's. Even in supporting roles, she was in many major pictures. Just look up her filmography and see. In her early silent movie days she was once named the most beautiful actress in the world by Photoplay magazine. I think I have this right this time when I say that since Princess and Lavender don't post photos, the thread goes to Shutoo.
