Found Out Star of the Month December

So yes it positively definitely does exist. Also, the silents SENORITA and NEVADA. By the way, it wasn't mentioned, but I'm sure you know: the main thing of interest to a lot of people who are familiar with TOO MANY KISSES is that Harpo Marx is in it. And he talks! (Well, being a silent movie, it is through titles). -
'Sweet Music'...a 'Singin' In The Rain' moment
musicalnovelty replied to VP19's topic in General Discussions
> {quote:title=VP19 wrote:}{quote}There were technical difficulties at the start of the film, and as a result, the voice track was out of sync with the action on the screen, and the discrepancy expanded to close to a half-minute, making the film unintentionally hilarious. Too bad for Ann Dvorak fans on her day, though to be fair she didn't have much screen time in this programmer. Update at 8:09 A.M. eastern - it's back in synch....for now anyway. There was also some problem at the start of the movie and all of the opening titles & credits were not shown. SO - please, TCM Programmers, try to get this movie re-scheduled again soon. -

Found Out Star of the Month December

> {quote:title=markbeckuaf wrote:}{quote}Wow, that's awesome if true! I hope that they might be able to mine some of Powell's early Paramount films ... That was my immediate first thought, too when hearing this news! Please TCM look into it, and also see what's accessable of Powell's many silent films. -

I watched her when I was a kid, and liked her well enough. But, as an adult, I don't care for her TV character. I do think she was very talented, and made some good films. Like Clore, I also like the Lucy/Harpo ep. I agree about the Harpo episode. That's the only time I'd intentionally tune in to any TV show of Lucy's.

Kyle In Hollywood's CENSORED Poster Gallery

Just never got the big deal about her. She's okay in a lot of the old movies, but too often annoying on her TV shows, especially with that obnoxious crying thing she'd do. One good thing about Lucy day finally being over is that hopefully now TCM will give a rest to that promo in which Carol Burnett talks about how great Lucy was. That thing is doubly annoying for folks who also don't care for Carol Burnett.

> {quote:title=gagman66 wrote:}{quote}I would love to see Kino release restored versions of THE LOVE EXPERT , DULCY and THE DUCHESS OF BUFFALO with Constance Talmadge. I agree. Constance was delightful! I'd like to see those titles you mentioned released on DVD or shown on TCM, especially THE LOVE EXPERT. I've seen that one twice before and enjoyed it very much and would definitely purchase it if it were released on DVD.

I always thought she was a local person found in Vienna who was used in that scene. But now I know she was a British actress by the name of Madge Brindley. She briefly plays the mother of the girl at John Mills' rooming house in "Hobson's Choice". Hey, something in this thread that really is interesting! Thanks, Fred! Here's Madge Brindley's IMDb entry: She actually did quite a lot of films & TV. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0109483/

TCM Grooves Week of August 8th!!!

> {quote:title=cody1949 wrote:}{quote}August 9 will be an especially interesting day.... MASSACRE ... This I believe will be its premiere showing on TCM. It has definitely been on TCM before, but not in several years. -
> {quote:title=Skeebo wrote:}{quote}What happened to the Zorro Saturday series. They showed 3 episodes and no more. There's a lot more episodes, but nothing is scheduled. ?????????? They showed all the episodes of the last serial but not this 1. They will resume in September, after the special August programming ("Summer Under the Stars") finishes. Just consider August an extra-long cliff-hanger in the serial.

> {quote:title=Im4movies2 wrote:}{quote}I never really watched a Norma Talmadge film until I watched KiKi the other day. I don't know if it was the character or Norma herself that I found very irritating. I remember that it was she and her sister Constance I believe who married Buster Keaton and drove him crazy. > Her aggressiveness in trying to get Ronald Colman probably was how she really was off camera relentless, and cold. I would need to see more of her films. So far she is not one of my favorites. It was sister Natalie Talmadge who married Buster Keaton, it was not Norma or Constance. KIKI was an unusual comedy role for Norma. That is not how she usually acted in her movies. She was the dramatic one. Constance was the comedienne and her comedies are highly recommended (when you can find them!) The ones I've seen have been delightful.

> {quote:title=metz44 wrote:}{quote}cohens and kellys how can i get this film????is it on you tube? Unfortunately all of the Cohens and Kellys movies are pretty hard to find, especially on video or DVD. I haven't checked YouTube but I'd be surprised if any of them are on there. I have friends who own 16mm prints of some of them. The only place I know of to see THE COHENS AND KELLYS IN AFRICA is at The Library of Congress, which is where I saw it. But they didn't even have a complete print. I'm not sure what exists elsewhere in other archives or at Universal themselves. I saw a few others in the series at LoC such as ...IN SCOTLAND (again incomplete) and ...IN HOLLYWOOD. I have a good video copy of the last one in the series, ...IN TROUBLE but as I said, the rest of them are just not around for video or DVD collectors, at least not that I've seen. One problem with the films that may help in keeping them out of circulation is the whole "political correctness" thing. If some misguided folks think they have a problem with the characters in those movies being Jewish and Irish stereotypes imagine their indignity at something like THE COHENS AND KELLYS IN AFRICA.

Ronald Colman Day, Plus Rare Talmadge Sisters Features Tomorrow!

> {quote:title=mr6666 wrote:}{quote}thanks, gag for mention. Never saw Norma before. Was pretty cute in "Kiki". > Is that typical of the characters she plays? No, Norma was the Talmadge sister known for her dramatic roles. KIKI was a nice exception to that rule. Constance was the sister who made mostly comedies. And every one I've seen has been delightful! We really need more of her work accessable. I'd especially like to see TCM arrange to show LESSONS IN LOVE (1921). -
Hey that's great that Ramon has a new fan! He really was one of the greats! Keep collecting the films and spearding the word about this important star. May he never be forgotten!
-
That's Eddie Kane. In addition to his many headwaiter roles, one of the most unusual roles I've seen him in is in the 1930 movie THE COHENS AND KELLYS IN AFRICA. He plays the native chief...in blackface!

Anyone who watched THE CRYSTAL BALL: Did anyone notice something cool...funny...interesting...trivial... in one scene? In the scene where Paulette Goddard takes a book from a shelf did you look at the other books there? (I always do that sort of thing watching old movies). One of the books looked like a Film Daily Yearbook! I'm sure there are those here who know what those are (and may even collect them). The funny thing is that those books were intended for people in the movie business only...not for the public. So what would one have been doing there on Gladys George's bookshelf? Obviously the studio needed some random prop books for the scene and someone grabbed a nearby copy of one of those Yearbooks, not thinking we'd notice. But we did, didn't we! I've seen that kind of thing in other movies, too. For example, in the opening scene of the 1938 Universal Picture STRANGE FACES a newsstand is shown and most of the papers and magazines are movie industry Trade Papers such as the Motion Picture Herald. Again, those were not found at regular newsstands!

So, depending upon how much of a purist you are, you may want to seek out the complete print instead of TCM's (especially since you say you just had a problem with your recording).

What seemed like an interminable freeze and glitch was probably 2 seconds, lol. I got the gist, but it rankles anyhow. Did I miss anything else? You didn't really miss anything. That was how it ended. They were just trying for a comical final line and scene by repeating the "I met a dame" line that had been said earlier in the movie. -
Saturday morning, August 6, 2011: Hal Roach short BENNY, FROM PANAMA (1934) (being shown following the 1939 movie PANAMA LADY). This short has been shown on TCM only twice so far: on December 2 and December 9, 2006. Cast, etc. info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024875/combined
