THE PHENIX CITY STORY (1955) Info here: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/414187/The-Phenix-City-Story/ Then click on "Read the full synopsis."
  2. > {quote:title=MilesArcher wrote:}{quote} > If you're going to mention Vernon Dent and Eric Campbell, then we must include Bud Jamison, Tiny Sandford, Tom Kennedy and, of course, Edgar Kennedy. Tom and Edgar were not related. Let's also not forget Ben Weldon, Herb Vigran, John Doucette, James Robertson Justice... > Yes, I did think of some of those names. But since the thread is about fat men I tried to limit those I listed and not include guys who I'd describe more as "big guys" rather than fat guys. I know it's a fine line, but some guys were just big, not necessarily fat.
  3. Not mentioned yet: W.C. Fields Vernon Dent Joe DeRita Eric Campbell

  5. > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > I guess that people willingly accept the nickname of Fats or Fatso. > Somehow it seems less insulting when a tall thin guy is called "Silm" (such as Slim Summerville). But I'm sure some of those called Fats or Fatso resented the name. I've heard that Roscoe Arbuckle hated the name "Fatty" but had to put up with it during his career. And knowing that now, fans who love and respect him and his work refuse to refer to him as "Fatty", only as Roscoe.
  6. > {quote:title=MilesArcher wrote:}{quote} > How about a fat boy? Do you remember Norman "Chubby" Chaney from the early thirties "Our Gang" comedies? > If one mentions Norman Chaney we must not forget Joe Cobb, the Our Gang fat boy of the late 1920's who Chaney replaced.
  7. Was anyone watching several years ago when it was shown on AMC (I believe) and a clueless host introduced the movie as "Murders in the 200" ("Two Hundred" not "Zoo") obviously misreading a cue card?

I've never had any problem enjoying SON OF KONG. Sure it's not as elaborate as KING KONG, but still lots of fun. And stay tuned after the movie this Saturday morning for the 1929 Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy short THE OPERATION.

  12. > {quote:title=ValentineXavier wrote:}{quote} > Anyone who can answer my question will know what color girls are, but many people won't. "Color Girls" are the girls in a few frames of the film leader, before the count. They also have a color chart in the frame. They are used to see if skin tone is right. Different film manufacturers, different film stocks, and different countries, use different color girls. In Japan, they use Japanese color girls, with Japanese skin tones. In Africa, they use black color girls, with appropriate skin color to shoot black subjects. > > So, what I would like to know, does anyone know of a source, preferably on line, where they have a variety of color girls? Of course I tried the wikipedia, and Google, but had no luck. > I have heard them referred to more aften as "China Girls" than as "color girls". Perhaps if you do a search on that you'll find more info than with "color girls". And, please do let us know what you find!

  15. Ritz Brothers fans: check out the 1929 Vitaphone short BILLIE "SWEDE" HALL and COMPANY IN "HILDA" and look closely at the actor playing the bellboy. I'm thinkin' it's Jimmy Ritz of The Ritz Brothers! He is even called "Jimmy" in one scene. I have never seen this credit listed anywhere before. The short is included in the new DVD set "Vitaphone Varieties" available through Warner Archives.
  16. > {quote:title=calvinnme wrote:}{quote} > I was viewing part one of the documentary "Silent Hollywood" on youtube and they had a clip of "Fire Brigade" in the very beginning. I had never heard of this one before so I looked it up on imdb. It had a high rating, 13 votes, and two reviews... The credits say this film was made by MGM. If it exists, has it ever been shown on TCM, and if not does anybody know why? > At least one print of it exists. I saw it at Cinevent in Columbus, Ohio a couple of years ago. Not sure why it's never been shown on TCM, but I sure would like it to be!

  18. Whichever actor is considered best - would you say he "nailed" the role?

  22. Unlisted short after SWING YOUR LADY: "Hollywood Hist-O-Rama - Gloria Swanson" (1961). Short following 6,000 ENEMIES: "Hollywood Hist-O-Rama - Edward G. Robinson" (1961).
