Instead, they seem to be playing the second episode first, then the third, and only then the first one. I noticed this too, and commented on it way back three months ago when the April schedule was first revealed. One might have expected it to have been corrected on the schedule by this time. I guess we just have to assume it's an unintentional typo and that they'll run the chapters in the proper sequence when the time comes.
  2. Dick Clark is also being discussed here: (With a lengthy obituary article also posted): http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=134671&tstart=0
  3. > {quote:title=classicstarletsfan wrote: > }{quote}FRECKLES and LADDIE are the 2 Movies of Virginia's I have wanted to see since forever!!! AMC when they were showing the classic movies never had shown these and TCM never has shown them. I have seen scene stills from these 2 movies but, these 2 movies never have been shown anywhere. Would be a nice surprise if TCM could show these,it would be like a dream come true for me!!! Unfortunately you may never get to see those two movies. You're right that they've never been shown on TV. It's not just that prints of the two movies are rare, but there are legal problems that prevent them from being shown on TV or being released on video or DVD. This is also the situation with most other movies based on the writings of author Gene (Geneva) Stratton-Porter (1863-1924). There's some further info regarding FRECKLES in particular, here (especially in the posts starting 10-27-10): http://www.nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4139&start=60 A rare print of FRECKLES was shown at Cinefest in Syracuse, NY in March 2010 and I got to see it then. I hope somehow the rights issues get straightened out and that all of the rest of Virginia Weidler's fans can finally get to see it, as it was a good one and a real treat for her fans. I've still not seen the 1935 version of LADDIE but at Cinefest this year they showed the 1940 version (also very rare) so I'm still hoping Virginia's version will turn up somewhere.
  4. > {quote:title=Edgecliff wrote: > }{quote}4/17 Releases: > > ...MILLIONAIRE FOR CHRISTY - stars Fred MacMurray, Eleanor Parker... This is the second recent Warner Archive release of a movie originally released by 20th Century-Fox (the other being THE STEEL TRAP, 1952). As with that one, there must have been changes in rights or copyright renewals that make this possible. It just seems weird when I see a 20th Century-Fox movie coming out through Warner Archives.

  6. In the 1937 MGM short BARS AND STRIPES bandleader Dick Winslow is driving along, singing to himself and gets so involved that unintentionally he starts speeding. He then gets arrested.
  7. Lots of singin' while drivin' in Elvis movies, it seems. Here's another: In CLAMBAKE (1967) Elvis and Will Hutchins sing "Who Needs Money?" while Will is driving a car and Elvis is riding on a motorcycle.
  8. In BLUE HAWAII (1961) Elvis Presley sings two songs while driving in a car. In this clip Elvis sings "Almost Always True" with Joan Blackman while she drives: And here Elvis sings "Moonlight Swim" with Nancy Walters, Christian Kay, Pamela Austin and Darlene Tomkins while driving:

One was even written by her friend Jean Porter. I'm not sure how available these issues may be at this time, but here's a link to their website: http://www.classicimages.com/past_issues/
  10. > {quote:title=slaytonf wrote: > }{quote}The Gaynor/March A Star is Born is such a fine movie, it's distressing to see the poor print quality whenever it's aired. Have there ever been any plans to restore it? It was restored by UCLA way back in the 1980's (I think it was) - I recall recording the "Entertainment Tonight" segment when Leonard Maltin reported on it and showed clips of how good it looked, but don't recall exactly when that was. But unfortunately I've never seen that restored print ever on TV or video or DVD. I do have the recently released KINO DVD that gagman mentioned (I won it in a contest over at Nitrateville!) and it's a pretty good print, but not the UCLA restoration. The DVD box says the print is from The George Eastman House. It says "Mastered in HD from an original nitrate 35mm Technicolor print preserved by the George Eastman House Motion Picture Department". It sure would be great if we could finally see the UCLA restoration!
  11. > {quote:title=gpr1950 wrote: > }{quote}Has this movie ever been shown on TCM? It was Vilma Banky's last film and was released through MGM. Yes, TCM did show it a few times in their first couple years on the air (1994 through about 1996) but it hasn't been on in many years now. I believe there is a rights issue involving the story it's based on that is keeping it from being shown.

Was it an extra on a DVD of some Warner Bros. movie? Does anyone know?
  13. Sunday night at 11:34 P.M. (Eastern), after WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD - WHAT PRICE TAXI (1932) - Taxi Boys series. It's one of the two really good* Taxi Boys shorts. Wacky fun! *Meaning, for one thing, Ben Blue is NOT in this one!

Another favorite is their next 45 released after "Words" in 1968 - a weird one called "Jumbo". Not their biggest hit, but still a fave of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA-ucP30XhE
  15. That sounds like it could be THE MATING GAME (1959) starring Debbie Reynolds and Tony Randall. Plot summary here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053054/plotsummary Cast & credit details here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053054/combined
  16. Two unlisted shorts shown Friday night, April 13, 2012 after FORBIDDEN GAMES: REDUCING (1952) - MGM And THE MAN AROUND THE HOUSE (1955) - MGM (Both Pete Smith shorts).
  17. The eight silent Laurel & Hardy shorts that TCM ran last November are being repeated on Monday morning, April 23, 2012. Schedule here: http://www.tcm.com/schedule/index.html?tz=est&sdate=2012-04-23

Those movies were released on DVD through Warner Archives, not by TCM. They're not the same thing.
  20. > {quote:title=mitali77 wrote: > }{quote}I have never seen any extras on the WB Archive DVDs. Maybe you haven't been keeping up with them. When Warner Archives started I believe they stated there'd be no restorations or extras. But there have been more and more over the last few years. First of all, there have been many double features - that's like getting a whole second movie as an extra! Many ARE new restorations (or Remastered as they put it). Quite often extra material is included such as trailers (sometimes not even noted on the packaging, but they're there). And one of my favorites: on the recent DVD of the 1934 movie HOLLYWOOD PARTY they included 38 minutes of rare previously unreleased audio material - deleted or alternate takes of the musical numbers. Just today I got a Warner Archives New Releases announcement including the 1951 MGM movie WESTWARD THE WOMEN and for extras on that disc they're including the MGM promotional short for the movie and an audio commentary track. They've even been upgrading the cover images on the DVD boxes since the series started. So, yes they most certainly are including extras.
  21. > {quote:title=RayFaiola wrote: > }{quote}First of all, RKO trailers are often rare as hen's teeth.... > > And the RKO library itself was very poorly handled before it was acquired by UA/Turner/Warners. Many of the films were never reissued and the camera negs simply turned to dust. And RKO wasn't very dilligent about depositing protection prints with the LOC. When the C&C package was prepared in 1955, the studio often used 35mm prints to strike reduction negatives and, of course, removed the logo, main title card and end title, replacing them with C&C cards and often truncating both ends of the soundtrack. These 35mm altered prints are, in many cases, all that was saved. > All very true and interesting about the RKO trailers and prints. But actually in the original post the complaint was about the trailer for SWING FEVER which is MGM, not RKO. And by the way, I've also seen some of those Kay Kyser Lucky Strike shorts - good fun stuff!
  22. > {quote:title=musikone wrote:}{quote} > Unfortunately, however, you won't be able to see it when you "see" it. As far as I can recall, this is absolutely the worst print (far worse then The Santa Fe trail shown just ahed of it) of any movie that I have ever seen in my entire lifetime! So all of you out there stop fawning over it and ask for something that is worth your effort to wish for!!! > > Here is yet another print that is *WORSE THAN UNACCEPTABLE.* > To many of us who have seen a lot worse, it wasn't THAT bad. Having seen much worse, I was perfectly fine with it. I appreciated TCM bringing it to us. I guess when it comes to cases like the 1930 CHARLEY'S AUNT where this may be all there is, you have to decide "Would you rather never see it at all or see it in less than perfect quality?"
  23. ON BORROWED TIME (1939) - MGM Lionel Barrymore and Bobs Watson sing "Casey Jones" while Lionel is driving them in a car.
  24. Sorry to hear that you're disappointed in the DVD. Big Kyser fan here too, and I enjoyed your book very much.
