Disney worked so hard and long at perfecting the fluidity of the animation, while still trying to maintain a level of fiscal efficiency. He finally suceeded. In fact, we still prefer the old Disney work to much of the Pixar stuff, even though it was agreed that Pixar animation is pretty cool. > Big Fleischer fan here, too. And as much as I do love the Warner Bros. cartoons, I think my favorite stuff is still the early 1930's Fleischer stuff.

RIVER OF ROMANCE, by the way, was remade by Paramount in 1935 as MISSISSIPPI starring Bing Crosby, W.C. Fields and Joan Bennett.
  3. I know that one! Song: Long Ago and Far Away. Composer & lyricist: Jerome Kern & Ira Gershwin. Movie: Cover Girl (1944). Singers: Gene Kelly & Rita Hayworth (although I believe Rita was dubbed by someone like Martha Mears).
  4. Sam Jaffe He was so memorable in such films as LOST HORIZON, GUNGA DIN and so many more.
  5. Song: "Nasty Man" Lyricists: Jack Yellen & Irving Caesar Movie: "George White's Scandals" (1934). (Sung in the movie by Alice Faye). Edited by: musicalnovelty on Feb 10, 2012 12:43 AM to say...Never Mind...mudskipper beat me to it while I was typing my answer.

But...you beat me to it...that's my favorite by them too! Seems like 1920's or 1960's, we have much the same musical tastes!
  7. > {quote:title=Edythevanhopper wrote:}{quote} > John Garfield, Kirk Douglas, Edw G Robinson and Al Jolson were all either born to Jewish immigrants living on NY's east side, or came to the US as young boys? And they all changed their names to what we know them as, as actors.
  8. It's got Janet Gaynor and Sally Eilers in it...two of my favorite movie ladies who we see way too little of on TCM...so when they're on screen the movie looks absolutely beautiful to me! But I agree the picture quality may not be perfect, it has some splices, and has at least one scene edited out for its 1935 reissue, but whenever I get to see any Fox Picture from 1933 I am thankful it exists at all. And in addition to Gaynor and Eilers I'm always glad to see Will Rogers in anything. It's important that such a legendary preformer not be forgotten by his films not being shown enough. So, thank you TCM for bringing this one to us tonight!
  9. > {quote:title=metz44 wrote:}{quote} That is Selmer Jackson. And I can even tell you that portrait is from the 1930 RKO Radio Picture LOVIN' THE LADIES.
  10. Although it's unlikely that many serial fans would call it the best, in case any of the serial fans here hadn't heard yet, I thought I'd mention that the 1933 Universal serial THE PERILS OF PAULINE starring Evalyn Knapp will be starting on TCM on Saturday mornings in late April.
  11. See Lane Chandler with The Three Stooges: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0RdOW1tR_E

Sounds like an inventory of my 78 collection! Lots of great music by those bands!

He was? Here's another: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0279961/bio#trivia And regarding Lee Powell, check out what it says in his biography & trivia here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0694205/bio

  15. If your name is Barbara or Johnny, watch out if you go and visit his grave!
  16. That's bandleader Earl Burtnett next to Bessie Love.
  17. It was also shown at last year's Capitolfest in Rome, NY. Info on this year's event: http://www.romecapitol.com/capitolfest.html
  18. "Anyone remember Lane Chandler?" Yes, very well. He's one of those actors where even if I hear only his voice in a film I know right away who it is. And yes, he should have been a bigger star.
  19. > {quote:title=wouldbestar wrote:}{quote}{font:Times New Roman} {font} > {color:black}The William Talman looks like it was from *Underworld USA.* Or, the shot could be from THE HITCH-HIKER (1953).
  20. I'll name one that may not be among the three you're thinking of: Charley Chase sings it to Joyce Compton in the 1935 Hal Roach short MANHATTAN MONKEY BUSINESS (and very nicely too!)

You can find the poster by going to the thread: it's in the "Favorite Posters of the Day" thread in the "Your Favorites" forum.

This short, SEEING HANDS, is coming up again on TCM on Saturday night, Feb. 11, 2012 at 7:48 P.M. eastern time.
  23. > {quote:title=freddiem wrote: > }{quote}Hello Everyone.... > > My interest in the films is because my great aunt was an extra in films, and I am in the process of collecting all the films I can find of her. Freddiem, Welcome to the TCM Boards! That's cool that your great aunt was in those films. Under what name was she billed? Is she listed on The Internet Movie Data Base ("IMDb")? What other films was she in? One of the movies you asked about, BROADWAY HOSTESS is coming up on TCM early Saturday morning, Feb. 11.
