  1. Freddiem, Welcome to the TCM Boards! That's cool that your aunt was in those films. Under what name was she billed? Is she listed on The Internet Movie Data Base ("IMDb")? What other films was she in? One of the movies you asked about, BROADWAY HOSTESS is coming up on TCM early Saturday morning, Feb. 11.
  2. > {quote:title=TCMFanHelenB wrote: > }{quote}I just watched Some Like It Hot for the very first time ever. > At the end of the movie after THE END comes up on the screen and the movie fades out to black, the music continued for the usual 30-40 seconds where maybe some credits usually are shown however the screen simply remained in black during this end music. Is that the way the movie was made? Or was that some sort of technical meltdown somewhere? Does anyone know? Thanks very much Yes, that's the way the movie was made. The extra music after the end title (or if there's an end cast list) is usually called Exit Music. It was intended to play as the theater audience got up and left the theater. Exit music is not on all movies, in fact it's pretty rare. It was common on many early sound movies (1929 through about 1934) and revived only occasionally during the years following. Fox Films are among the few who kept up the practice through even as late as 1934. CHARLIE CHAN IN LONDON and CURLY TOP (both Fox, 1934) have exit music. The 1933 Hal Roach/MGM feature THE DEVIL'S BROTHER starring Laurel & Hardy has exit music, but those are among the last for that period. Unfortunately the Exit Music film footage is chopped off a lot of the older movies or TV stations fade it out or cut it off and don't let it play. So we can be thankful to TCM who lets the Exit Music play. Exit Music for some of those early movies was actually called the Exit March (did they really expect the audience to march out?) And sometimes the Exit Music was called the Chaser. So, anyway, you didn't miss any of SOME LIKE IT HOT. There was no end cast list, (and all credits were given at the start of the movie) and the Exit Music was played over a black screen, as you saw.

I'm surprised they didn't shuffle the cast list to play up Maria Montez's small role and try to cash in on her later fame after appearing in this movie. This was often done....like the reissue of THE BLACK CAT (1941) in which Alan Ladd who had a minor role was listed as one of the stars in the reissue. I just checked out the poster for this movie posted here (Feb. 3 post): http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=153194&tstart=0 It's a Realart reissue and sure enough they actually changed the cast list to place Maria Montez third! All the Montez fans who'd have gone to see this during this reissue expecting to see a lot of Maria would have been very disappointed!

  5. Correct you are! That song is sung during the titles & credits of the movie.
  6. Happy Birthday! She'll never be forgotten. Biography & film list: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0137638/ Pictures: http://www.fanpix.net/gallery/mary-carlisle-pictures.htm
  7. THE GLENN MILLER STORY (Just finished watching it on TCM!)
  8. > {quote:title=lavenderblue19 wrote: > }{quote}Sylvia Lewis? Correct! She's always been one of my favorite performers so I thought I'd pick her as my "mystery lady" - and it's always a pleasure to rave about her talents, as she's been a good friend too, for many years! So, to explain the clues: The popular star on whose TV show she was choreographer and dancing partner was Ray Bolger. The top comedian with whom she made two movies and worked in his TV series was Jerry Lewis. And he's the star with whom she worked who had the same last name, but is no relation. The popular comedy team with whom she made a film in the 1950's was The Three Stooges (short BEDLAM IN PARADISE, 1955). The documentary she produced & directed about the star with whom she worked on TV was called "More Than a Scarecrow", about Ray Bolger. It was actually a compilation of some of the best dancing and comedy numbers from Ray Bolger's TV show. It was hosted by Donald O'Connor. It was completed in 1990 and for years Sylvia was shopping it around to TV stations, hoping that PBS or TCM or A&E might want to run it. She gave me a copy many years ago and it's been a special favorite of mine, especially being a gift from Sylvia herself. Eventually she told me that she was just going to put it out for all of Ray's fans to enjoy, so she posted it on YouTube, where one can also enjoy many other wonderful Sylvia Lewis clips of her performances from such movies and TV shows as THE CONQUEROR, SIREN OF BAGDAD, THE LADIES MAN, CHA-CHA-CHA-BOOM!, "The Dick Van Dyke Show", etc. Her former husband who just passed away was John Rich.

Always great to see Universals like that on TCM, but I want to see more of the obscure "B" stuff, and more Universal pre-codes.
  10. > {quote:title=Janet0312 wrote: > }{quote}Not many Universal fans on this board, are there? Yes, HUGE fan of Universal films (mostly only up to 1946). (And the movie you mentioned in a previous post - TRAIL OF THE VIGILANTES - is one of the best westerns ever!)

I agree that the music score for THE INVISIBLE WOMAN sounds all new and original, but there actually is one selection in its score that I recognize from an earlier Universal movie, THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE (produced a few months before THE INVISIBLE WOMAN). Composer Frank Skinner must have given the tune a new title for its use in THE INVISIBLE WOMAN, as comparison of the music cue sheets for both movies show no common titles. For those who would like to follow along while watching THE INVISIBLE WOMAN, here is a listing of all the musical selections in the score for the movie: (All compositions by Frank Skinner except the opening Universal Globe logo music). 1. New Universal Signature. (by Jimmy McHugh) - Entire. 2. Main Title (1) - Partial. 3. Main Title (2) - Partial. 4. Main Title (3) - Partial. 5. Virginia Receives a Letter. - Entire. 6. Into Space. - Partial. 7. The Mirror. - Entire. 8. Revenge. - Entire. 9. Virginia Returns. - Entire. 10. Fishy. - Entire. 11. Unseen Visitor. - Entire. 12. The Meeting. - Entire. 13. Alone At Last. - Entire. 14. Into Space. - Partial. 15. Main Title. - Partial. 16. Here We Go Again. - Entire. 17. Main Title. - Partial. 18. Beauty Arrives. - Entire. (Humming). 19. Well, if you can wait one more day, HOLY MATRIMONY is on TCM tomorrow - Saturday, Feb.4!
  14. That's Eddie Dunn, I believe in a shot from the 1932 Laurel & Hardy short ME AND MY PAL.
  15. > {quote:title=MilesArcher wrote: > }{quote}Musical Novelty, it's been a while. Could you please give us either more clues or an answer? Thanks. I guess I was waiting for another guess before posting another clue. Another clue: Our mystery lady was married from the mid-to-late 1950's (then divorced) to a very prolific award-winning TV and movie director and producer (IMDb lists 651 credits!) He directed episodes of some of the most popular TV series ever. He just passed away less than a week ago.
  16. > {quote:title=mr6666 wrote: > }{quote}trailer: http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/471105/Invisible-Woman-The-Original-Trailer-.html I noticed that none of the music used for the trailer is from the movie.
  17. > {quote:title=deadendkid wrote: > }{quote}...it's definitely a starring vehicle for Bobby Jordan. Speaking of Bobby Jordan, I just saw a couple of days ago his last appearance, in a 1961 "Bonanza" episode. He was billing himself as Robert Jordan by then.
  18. It's one of my favorites. And it has an excellent music score (especially for a movie in which we're not necessarily supposed to notice the score among all the comedy & special effects).
  19. > {quote:title=smileys wrote: > }{quote}*...the next time they show the film...* - dusty > > It's a Fox movie, and not back on the schedule in the next three months. Could be a one-and-done. It is on the March 2012 TCM schedule, to be shown on March 23. So, let's hope they have a different print then, with the soundtrack sounding as it should.
  20. > {quote:title=LonesomePolecat wrote: > }{quote}So who is SOTM? Having trouble figuring that out. > The answer to that plus other observations on the April schedule are in this previous thread about the April schedule: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=163491&tstart=30
  21. > {quote:title=allaboutlana wrote: > }{quote}*Beyond Tomorrow??* Correct!
  22. Clues 4 & 5: It's an independent production released through RKO Radio Pictures. TCM has shown it a few times.
  23. People are speculating about what movies will be shown on TCM in 2032 that were made up to 2012. What about all the movies made between 2012 and 2031? Anyway, I'm sure I'll still be wanting to see nothing from after 1959!
  24. Cool! - The 1933 Universal serial THE PERILS OF PAULINE starring Evalyn Knapp on the 28th (first three chapters). But let's hope they don't actually run them in the order as shown on this schedule: Chapters 2 then 3 then 1. There's plenty of time to fix that!
