Thanks for the beautiful picture of the beautiful Elyse Knox.
I hadn't seen yet that you'd posted this here, but already posted links to some articles & pictures over at the "In Memoriam" thread in "Hot Topics".
In my Sunday night movie gang we're all Elyse Knox fans and none of them had yet heard the sad news when I told them last night. We often screen Elyse's films (in 16mm naturally!) Recently we ran SO'S YOUR UNCLE and SWEETHEART OF SIGMA CHI. In two weeks it'll be THE MUMMY'S TOMB.

SO SICK of hearing about this lady.
Saturday had apparently been her funeral and one local TV station spent (wasted) the first seven (7!) minutes of their evening news coverage on this event. Unfortunately I was visiting with friends so couldn't change the channel as I instantly would have done if I could.
Let's hope finally we'll get a break from hearing about her.
Just trying to be possibly the lone voice of reason among all these misguided folks who are giving this whole thing way too much attention and coverage!

The first moment I saw that picture, before reading anything about it, I thought "That's Jack Larson".
So, I'm with Dargo on this.
Someone appears to have made a big goof on that site where you got the picture from. It'll be interesting to keep checking it to see if they ever correct it.

Yes, that's it - "New Universal Signature" composed by Jimmy McHugh.
It was given that title because that's what Universal was calling itself at the time: The New Universal.
And at that time such compositions weren't yet given titles like "logo" but more interesting titles like Signature, Emblem, Fanfare, etc.

According to IMDb, Jerry Goldsmith was born in 1929 and his first credits are 1954. The piece of music in question here was composed and introduced in 1937.

We've all seen lots of Universal movies from the late 1930's & early 1940's that start with the airplane flying around the globe logo and the accompanying music.

What is the exact proper title of that logo music and who was the composer?

I was a little surprised and disappointed to see the 1929 MGM feature SO THIS IS COLLEGE not included during Joel McCrea month.
His role in it is small, but he's very recognizable, and it is an MGM that TCM has shown before.

It's interesting that THE STEEL TRAP is being released through Warner Archives when it's a 20th Century-Fox Picture.
But it was an independent production and apparently the rights have changed hands somehow to where Warner Archive can release it.

I agree with you there.
Definitely NOT my kind of music.
And I'm SO SICK of hearing about her!
I can't get away from her on every news report every day! GIVE US A BREAK!! She wasn't that great! Not all of us care about her or her vocalizing (I can't even call it "singing"!)
Her high-pitched, ear-piercing, headache-inducing vocal excrutiations were painful...PAINFUL!!
Her screeching has the same musical enjoyment as a siren splitting through one's head.
With all due respect for anyone who dies before their time, and as I said when Michael Jackson died, sure it's sad news...but just don't make me have to hear any of their "music".

I got to see it in nice 35mm at Capitolfest, Rome, NY on August 14, 2010.
I wrote the Program Notes for it and while researching the movie I discovered that the 1939 Jack Benny comedy musical BUCK BENNY RIDES AGAIN (also Paramount) is a remake! (Well, partial remake anyway).

I remember seeing that one on AMC back in the early 1990's when they ran good stuff. I don't know of an official DVD release, though.
There were some collections of Paramount musical and comedy shorts released by KINO a few years ago. Can't recall if it may have been included in one of those sets.
