I totally agree with you, Mrs. Chips! We've arrived at a time when there will be a very large number of actors and actresses who have passed away during the year, and to leave any of them out of Tributes is very wrong. I don't know how the Academy Awards people will deal with this, or even if they can, but I do think that TCM could put together at least a "1/2-hour Special" to cover everyone at the end of each year, which would include everyone who made a significant contribution to films, and not necessarily just the better-known "stars".

Stella, you may (or may not) be interested in knowing that this movie is from a book written by Dorothy M. Johnson who is also a Montana Native. I'm sure that she and Coop had many good conversations together.
-
Hey there, Mongo! Yup, you got Marjorie Main right, a lady I truly adore every time I see her. And, I wasn't slighting you for the movies you listed for Lee Marvin, I was only adding two that are my personal favorites (smile).
Pete...thanks for letting me know that there ae finally DVD's available for Marjorie Main. That's great news!

James Cagney?

I'm glad to see that you remembered Lee Marvin today, Mongo. He was a versatile actor, and one of my very favorites. I think he could do anything on screen except tap dance, and had he put his mind to it, he probably could have done that, too! Aside from the movies you listed, I also liked him very much in "Hell in the Pacific" (maybe you listed this one) and "The Big Red One". I really miss him! Next week you will come across favorite actress of mine. Can you guess which one? ML

Mongo, I need to ask for one more change. I'd like to switch the movie for Fred Astaire to "The Band Wagon" from "Easter Parade". I just saw "The Band Wagon" for the first time in years again yesterday on TCM and forgot how good he (everyone, actually) was in that wonderful musical.
Then I'd like you to add Ann Miller for "Easter Parade" if you will please. Thanks. ML

I think you might have scenes from at least two different movies confused. The scene with the man down the street who fires the cannon several times a day is Admiral Boom, and every time he fires it everyone in the household runs to keep objects in the house from falling. This scene is in "Mary Poppins" (1964), and the father of the household (George W. Banks) is a banker, and Glynis Johns plays Mrs. Winifred Banks. They only have two children, however, the two that Mary Poppins serves as governess for.

And I have more:
Marilyn Monroe - "Bus Stop"
Fred Astaire - "Easter Parade"
Lew Ayres - "Johnny Belinda"
Ann Baxter - "All About Eve"
Wallace Beery - "The Champ" (This one was hard to pick)
Ingrid Bergman - "Intermezzo"
Lon Chaney - "The Phantom of the Opera"
Charlie Chaplin - "City Lights"
Charles Coburn - "The More The Merrier"
Deborah Kerr - "The Sundowners"
Tyrone Power - "The Long Gray Line"
Jane Darwell - "The Grapes of Wrath"
Marlene Dietrich - "The Blue Angel"
Richard Farnsworth - "The Gray Fox"
W.C. Fields - "The Gift"
Richard Jaeckel - "Sometimes a Great Notion"
Danny Kaye - "Hans Christian Anderson"
Buster Keaton - "The General"
Carol Lombard - "My Man Godfrey"
Ben Kingsley - "Gandhi"
Bette Midler - "The Rose" (She should have gotten the
Oscar for this one).
Ray Milland - "The Lost Weekend"
Agnes Moorehead - "The Magnificent Ambersons"
Sidney Poitier - "Lillies of the Field"
Thelma Ritter - "With a Song in my Heart"
Alan Arkin - "Catch 22"
Robert Mitchum - "The Night of the Hunter"
Robert Preston - "Dark at the Top of the Stairs"
Robert Duvall - "The Great Santini" (another hard guy to
pick just one for).

Welcome back, Coffeedan...glad to hear your mom is up and moving around. ML

Sorry, Mongo.

Mongo! You surprise me! "Garbo Talks" is without a doubt my very favorite Bancroft movie, but do you really think it's the best performance she ever gave? I thought we were considering "best performances" over "personal favorites" here. Am I wrong? ML
-
And, jmarshall...arguing seems to be all that you are interested in when you post here. What's that about?
-
Thanks for your reply back, too, Spencer. I truly love, and am interested in all the interesting things you know about and share with us here. Wish there were more like you at this site! ML

I'm getting deeper in darkness. Where is everyone else when you need them???
"A Yank at Eaton"?
-
I've been digging around with Ann Sothern! I always did confuse those two (smile).
-
Hi Feaito! "A red beard", and "A war", are throwing me off, so for another clue I'll say "Shane".
-
Oh, and I must add that when I do have an "idea" what the movie is, I do offer a guess...at least up to the point that the clues no longer make any sense to me (grin). At any rate, I don't want you to think that I'm making a fuss about any of this...'cuz I'm not. ML
-
Mongo, the only reason that I haven't been playing recently is because my knowledge of films is limited and most of the movies that I have seen were used up many ages ago (smile). I've been totally in the dark recently with the movies being used...and there's nothing wrong with that because I am learning, or at least continuing my long list of movies to watch for and hopefully see someday. It's still fun to watch the game.

I bet that you are correct, Feaito...scratch my guess.

I'm reminded at the mention of his name today, that we seldom mention Robert Young on these boards, and I have found him to be an excellent actor who had a long and significant career in films, and then on TV.
