Just want to extend a hearty Congrats to Linda Martinez, the first woman to win the competition, and who wrote a beautiful score for "The Rag Man". Please keep doing movie scores, Linda...I want to hear more from you in the future!
And, Antar...ix-nay on the "Free-for-all" area. You finally got one and it didn't turn out too well as I recall (smile).

And, Skippy...my congrats on your appointment as Director of the Home where you are also residing. I've always wanted to establish a Half-way House For Girls Who Don't Want to Go All The Way, and just haven't raised the funding quite yet (grin). Maybe Blanche would like to make a substantial donation? Perhaps you could ask her. ML

Skippy, believe it or not I was just being funny! I truly love the "Golden Girls"...all four of them. It's just that Devereaux isn't a name you hear all the time, and it made me think of Blanche right away (smile). Good choice for an Internet handle! ML

You bitches! You've left out Richard Simmons! (I'm sorry...I just couldn't resist).

One of my favorite Character Actors through the years has been Richard Jaeckel (1926-1997). It's hard to find a war movie that he isn't in. And, like so many others, after a long career in film he died in virtual poverty.
-
Hi Skippy! It's virtually impossible to step on anyone's toes around here. Most of what we discuss here has to do with "personal choices" and no two people are alike when it comes to that (smile). I sure agree with you about Brando anyway.
I'm sure you've been asked this before...you wouldn't be related to "Blanche Elizabeth Hollingsworth Deveraux" would you (wink)?

Mypalspencer, I was just speaking with "our friend Spencer" this morning via e-mail and he asked about you. Please drop him a line when you have time. ML

I totally agree about "The Rag Man". It was a wonderful silent, and Linda Martinez' score was excellent. She captured the character's very well with different themes, and also captured many different moods during the film. I hope that she will continue composing movie scores...she has a great talent and I'll be watching for her name to appear again in years ahead. Many Congrats Linda!

I'm also fond of Peter Seamus O'Toole in "My Favorite Year". I prefer the "light comedy" to the drama's re. drinking and drunks, and this was a funny movie although possibly not considered to be a Classic just yet.

A note to Stella: I sympathize with you about your kid changing the TV channel when you're taping. Believe it or not, I've done the same thing when I've forgotten that I was also taping what I was watching!
Here's a Tip for you: Gather up the remote's and hide them when you're going to record, and tape a large sign to the TV screen that says, "Don't touch! Taping is in progress!" when you can't be right there to catch the kids (smile). Better luck next time, kiddo! ML

Hi Mongo! The quote from W.C. Fields yesterday was a dandy! Do you have any more of his more "famous" quotes? ML

I'll give you a tip about logging in that finally fixed the problems I was having. Try this: When you first enter the Forums Listing page, log in right away and don't start reading posts before you do. If you try to log in after you've entered the various forums, or at the place of a post in one, you'll probably have trouble. Anyway, this worked for me, so I hope it works for you. Let us know. ML

Ah, why not? "Cheaper By the Dozen"?
-
I'm not sure what you're asking here...please clarify (smile).

I agree with you about William Powell in "The Thin Man" series. He put down a lot of booze, and it always seemed to be on his mind or in his hand, but he never really appeared to be "drunk". I wonder what that was about?
-
I agree! I remember bits and pieces of so many of the Serials which I saw as a kid at the Saturday Matinee's I attended every week with my neighborhood gang. We couldn't wait to see how the "hero" got out of this mess, and what was going to happen next week! I think that it's great that they have been preserved and are available to us again on DVD, and you bet that I'll support them by purchasing at least some of them. In their own right, they are also Classics...and were such fun, too.

Why do you think that TCM is doing "Spoofs" on Feb. 22? I looked at their line-up for that day (by clicking on Schedule, above), and there don't seem to be what I would consider to be "Spoofs" on that date.
-
Hi Eve,and Welcome! I've also heard that these two sisters had some kind of major differences over something, but I've never known what it was about or if it was ever resolved, so I'd be interested in the story myself. Someone around here must know the story.
-
And, a "Request" might be better received than a "Demand" (wink). Now that I'm looking for Silents, I'm not having any trouble finding them, even when the usual scheduling is interrupted for a while. I do agree with you, however, that if TCM is actually sitting on Silents we could be seeing because they don't yet have a musical score, then they really should get moving about getting them scored. One per year isn't going to cut it. Any ideas on what they might be doing to solve this problem, aside from showing them without a musical soundtrack of some kind?
-
In order to know why certain, and more recently released movies, are being shown on TCM, you need to understand that TCM does various "themes" from time to time ("Spoofs", for example), or features a Star, which might mean the showing of a newer film that star made (Kate Hepburn this month, and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?"), and during February TCM gives us a daily schedule of the Oscar Winners they have in their library. This is called "The 31-days of Oscar", because of this special once per year theme, we will be seeing lots of movies that aren't normally shown on TCM.
So, don't panic...just read TCM's Home Page from time to time and sit back and enjoy the wonderful movies they show us. ML

You're very welcome. Happy to help. ML

Knock it off, C.J.

Yup...and that is when it was shown.

Minatonga, if you've read the book, can you tell us what that rivalry was about, when it started, if it was ever resolved, etc.? Was it something that began during their childhood and doesn't really have anything to do with being actresses, other than that they both chose acting careers?
