James, that was an interesting comparison between the two actresses. I've seen "The Hard Way" many times. I love that movie and Ms. Lupino is terrific in it. She should have received an Oscar nomination for that one. Curiously, she won the New York Film Critic award that year, but Hollywood, in all their wisdom, failed to even acknowledge her. And I can definitely see Susan Hayward in that role. It takes a really tough character to pull it off, and I feel that Ms. Hayward could have done a great job.

Wouldbestar, I'm impressed that someone else remembers "Dragoon Wells Massacre." I haven't seen it in years, but I remember it so well. One of the reasons is that I'm very fond of both of the leading actresses, Mona Freeman and Katy Jurado. And I've learned to never give up. It just may show upon TCM one of these days. And yes, that scene with Elam and the little girl is so touching.

Lane, although I'm familiar with Claude Akins, can you recommend some of his movies that show his range? I'd love to see them again. And I agree about John Dehner. I remember him as Stanwyck's husband in "Trooper Hook." It was a small, but memorable part.

Fred, you are absolutely right! I don't know why I thought this movie was "The Last Command." Actually, I was thinking of "Dragoon Wells Massacre." (How I confused these two movies, I'll never understand.) Thanks again for setting me straight.

Lane, of all the western heavies, I guess my favorite would be Jack Elam. Although there weren't too many opportunities to display his range, there were a couple of instances when he was given a chance. In the movie "The Last Command", he had a scene with a little girl who had befriended him. It was a very touching scene where he talked about his loneliness and how he had been treated as an outcast. As far as I know, that was a first for him. And then later on in "Support Your Local Gunfighter" he displayed a comic side, also a rarity. These heavies always added so much to the westerns.
