I really do enjoy The Green Berets but I, too, could use a change-up. I'm not particularly attracted to Vietnam War films, though I did enjoy Good Morning, Vietnam (1987). Robin Williams' healthy disregard for the established authorities was entertaining. Generally, (U.S. made) Vietnam war movies seem to have been produced some 10 or more years after the fact. Whereas, many WWII films were a product of the War years. Maybe the Vietnam War films are more difficult to obtain for broadcast - more studios to deal with than the old Hollywood gang. I'm just guessing.. I would enjoy seeing The Deer Hunter (1978), which can be disturbing to some - it was to me. I would also like to see Jacob's Ladder (1990) - it's not for everyone, but I enjoyed trying to figure out what the hell was going on.. kinda like Pulp Fiction the first time I saw it. Casualties of War (1989) was good - I liked the performances of Michael Fox and Sean Penn.

Do you hear another language when some, but not all, programs are broadcast? ; or do you see closed-caption words at the bottom of the screen? There used to be a SAP button on many remotes, or a menu item labeled SAP. Now, as on my tv, it's buried in the menu and labeled Language (English, Spanish, or French, e.g). I guess this is because many or all broadcasters are including the SAP in their signal (as they now include display ratios.. ugghh!), so you don't need to turn it off or on because it's always on - just select the language you want and your tv will auto-detect their SAP signal, check your setting and change it. If this is what's going on with your tv, and you're getting a non-English language, you just need to change it back to English and your tv will ignore the SAP signal when it comes in. Theoretically.. p.s. When you say "can't get rid of the reader", do you mean you're seeing words of dialog at the bottom of your screen? If so, that's Closed-Captioning - not SAP. Look for a CC button on your remote. (i've worn away the increments on my slide rule)

What I saw Casablanca as this morning, from Fred's images, appeared to be "Pillar-boxed" Not the wide sidebars.. narrow, like the image here. I saw Robin Hood full screen - curious. With the changes cable providers have made recently, I'm having to change my ratio settings every time I switch channels, and now, every time a different feed on the same channel comes in. When I was watching local news last night, the news was full screen, the first commercial went to 4 : 3, the next to 16 : 9, then back to full screen for the news again. Help me get off this crazy merry-go-round!

I just got in and caught the final scene and noticed today's version had black side bars. I had to check my settings.. everything ok there. The rest of TCM is full screen. Wha-happen?

A most excellent reply - correct, of course. Thank you, Miles! Your thread.
-
Thank you, Miles. According to Robert Osborne, a very well known actor (past his prime) was offered the role of an experienced hunter and guide , but chose instead to star in another film made the same year about an orphan boy. This paved the way for the actor who was given the hunter/guide role. He was now on his way to stardom, as his film proved to be much more popular. Name the film the original actor turned down. Other info optional.

Living In A Big Way (1947) ?

After Giant.. hmm.. I was trying to recall another movie but this one got stuck in my head, so I'll put it out here: Is it Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Nearly 8 months. I think I'll slip one in here. --------------------------------------------------------------- The title song for this film was nominated for an Oscar - it was included in only one print to qualify for the Oscars. This print was not released to the general public, nor was the title song included in the film's restoration. However.. the composer did win an Oscar for his original score to this film. Please name the film - composer and other info optional.

AHA ! You are correct! William Katt is the actor; Barbara Hale, the actress; Big Wednesday (1978), the film; and The Greatest American Hero, the tv series. The Greatest American Hero - Episode 29: Who's Woo in America (1982) Barbara Hale was Jack Barlowe's (William Katt's) mom (Mrs. Barlowe) in the movie: Big Wednesday (1978) And the 70s sci-fi horror film Ms. Hale was in (with her real-life husband, Bill Williams).. The Giant Spider Invasion (1975) Thank you, lavender! Good work.

Another clue for our actress After winding up her role in the aforementioned tv series she later reprised that role in 30 made-for-tv movies.

Thou shalt not nod off, man. -
Our mother was also in a 70s sci-fi horror film with her real life husband (father of our son here). I believe this was her next to last film.

I was watching Perry Mason this morning: The Case of the Crooked Candle (1957) As the end credits were rolling, the bottom left corner of the screen was used for the (then) sponsor's ads.. and what should appear.? Good old Dutch Cleanser! I wouldn't have paid it any attention but for our discussion here.

I want her hair recipe. I think she got it from Valerie Bertinelli, but she ain't talkin'. Oh great.. now you've got me doing it..
-
Ok. You talked me into it. Although the mother was a film actress, she is more well known for her own role in a popular 50s - 60s tv series.

These guys remind me of the early Rolling Stones

Before I had seen Zero Hour, I believed The High and the Mighty (1954) was the source for Airplane! There are more than a few near identical scenes. Now I know Zero Hour is the real source - almost scene for scene.. word for word. When I watch it all I see and hear is Airplane!

No luck here either. I found a still with them drinking a malt, but the price sign on the wall behind them was cut off - no price visible. I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks
