  1. One of my favorite films, with quite a cast. This one was nominated for an Oscar for Best Color Cinematography - sadly, I've noticed it appears to have faded a bit, with some scenes having pulsating color. As such a notable film, and with it's filmed record of our pre-WWII Navy, I would think this would make a good candidate for a proper restoration.

This film was released just four months before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

  2. I was going to say Since You Went Away.. AGAIN!? But then I re-read your clue. Evidently, there were musical numbers in your film, but they could not be released as part of the soundtrack - whereas, Since You.. had no musical numbers.

ok.. back to our regular programming..

  3. There's one other thing I learned about Ted Donaldson.  He played the part of Bud in the radio version of "Father Knows Best".

The Radio Cast of Father Knows Best, from left to right: Norma Jean Nilsson (as Kathy),Ted Donaldson (as Bud), Robert Young (as Jim), Rhoda Williams (as Betty), and June Whitley Taylor (as Margaret).  The audition show was called “Meet the Hendersons” (12/20/1948) but by the time the radio show premiered on August 25, 1949, the family name was changed to the one we all know and love “The Andersons.” The show aired on Thursday evenings through March 25, 1954.

Yes, several popular TV shows in the fifties originated at radio programs.

    It's still Lavender's turn.

I shure wish sometimes that I was born about 10 years earlier. I would like to have grown up in that prosperous era after WWII. But then.. I'd be hurtin' now, boy!

    :P

  4. Ha! I got a 2-for-1 deal tonight, courtesy of TCM

    ;)

I posted a shot of them playing checkers over in the Board Games thread; now this, from the same film tonight.. prices written on the back mirror.

  5. I have to agree with DB,  in that I don't get a homosexual vibe from the Stewart character.    Instead I see an eager teacher (Ok, overeager),  and students that have bonded with said teacher.      Their bond was intellectual not sexual.

Nicely put. I view it the same way.
