  1. Didn't even need to go that route.  I recognized that as one of the Dick Powell movies that I have.  The OP's clues were an excellent retelling of the last scene of the movie.  All I needed to do was narrow it down to the title.  There are two different movies of his with a similar type of plot.  I confirmed it by watching the last 5 minutes...lol

    Most excellent!

    :)

I can retain facts, but I have trouble with movie plots I don't see often enough. You have a great ability.

  2. Could this be it?

    How Come?

    performed by Anita O'Day

I've got a guy who says he loves me, so he says!
And every night he's dreamin' of me, so he says!
I'm gonna knock on his front door,
I'm gonna find out what's the score!

How come you don't love me like you used to, how come?
And you still my baby! Come come!
    You go runnin' round datin'
    And leave me waitin',
Oh baby, how come, how come?

You don't kiss me like you used to, how come?
Am I still your baby? Come come!
    You're a solid hit, skipper,
    But honey, I'm a hipper!
    Tell me how come?

    Baby, I'm confessin'
    You have got me guessin';
    Lately, I don't get nowhere,
I get the air of Frigidaire!

How come you don't thrill me how you used to, how come?
And you still my baby! Come come!
    Better stop your lyin',
    Alibi-in',
And tell me baby, how come?

    Baby, I'm confessin'
    You have got me guessin';
    Lately, I don't get nowhere,
I get the air of Frigidaire!

How come you don't thrill me how you used to, how come?
And you still my baby! Come come!
    Better stop your lyin',
    Alibi-in',
And tell me baby, how come?
You better stop your lyin' and tell me how come!

  3. Depends on your definition of "great". Flaming Star is a fine western by any standard, and EP gives a fine performance. His acting in the "renunciation" scene is better than anything I've ever seen from, say, Warren Beatty.

There is a quote describing Elvis as a good actor from one of his co-stars, none other than Walter Matthau (who was not known for tossing around compliments freely).  Unfortunately I can't find it online.

    IMDb has this.. on that..

Walter Matthau : He [Elvis Presley] was an instinctive actor...He was quite bright...he was very intelligent...He was not a punk. He was very elegant, sedate, and refined, and sophisticated.

  4. Although I enjoy this movie very much, Arsenic and Old Lace always seemed a bit corny.. well, over acted a bit at any rate. I suppose this comes from it's stage origin. Whatever makes it feel like a play was transferred to the film version - as I see it, anyway.

Cary Grant's overly expressive behavior as he discovers the body in the chest.. He's playing that to the camera as he would to his (stage play) audience.

But now that I think about it, You Can't Take it With You has more corn.

    More "characters" per square foot.

  5. ...

Although Goring was thoroughly British, he was cast often as evil Germans or Nazis in later films.  He could speak fluent German, and his name and blond looks helped with this type of casting.  He spent most of his career as a stage actor.

Here he is in A Matter of Life and Death with David Niven.

As many times as I have seen this film, your photo has made me realize, for the first time, David Niven is barefoot. Never noticed this before. See.. even after (mumblemumble) years, I can still make new discoveries in film.

    :)
