*Mrs. Doubtfire* (no doubt) nw: social climber -
Here we go - I made my first film appearance in a 60?s sex romp and my first credited role was in an obscure film for a director who later went on to earn much acclaim. Early on, I appeared in a James Bond film. I?ve worked with some of the most notable leading men of the 20th century: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Sean Connery, William Holden, Marcello Mastroianni, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Nick Nolte and many others. I?ve never been married but have had a busy love life... ...and I?m still working today. Who am I? Message was edited by: theladyeve

Thanks, Molo, you do know how to construct a puzzle - very enjoyable again. I'd figured out Shirley MacLaine, but (somehow) didn't think of Natalie Wood. Will be back with a new "me" - but you're a hard act to follow...

Correct - your turn (Posted the above in a hurry - about the movie - *The Bribe* stars Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Charles Laughton (the "pie-shaped man"), Vincent Price and John Hodiak. Laughton and Price steal the show. It was on TCM not long ago.) Message was edited by: theladyeve

Here are all clues so far, plus #10 and more info: 1. The basics: the story of an honest cop who falls for a suspect and has trouble deciding if she?s guilty or innocent. 2. Foreign intrigue?voice-over narration?first half told in flashback. 3. The lovely suspect is married?to another suspect - and he?s crooked. The hero struggles with love vs. honor. 4. Takes place in an exotic clime?sweating mandatory!?the black market is alive and well here?the hero is investigating a smuggling racket. 5. MGM noir = noir with a high-gloss sheen and major stars. This film airs on TCM. 6. A local thief offers the hero a chunk of money to leave town, but he refuses. He goes fishing with yet another suspect and ends up toppling into the ocean. The man who saves him dies in the process. 7. The thief, a disheveled "pie-shaped" fellow shadows the hero everywhere?the real villain is debonair, ice cold and playing for keeps (he gets what he deserves in the end)?these two characters steal the movie ? but the crooked, drunken, sick husband is also good?plus, the hero is handsome and the woman is a great beauty? 8. Coming out of flashback, the hero is still torn but decides to take the money he was offered and leave town with the woman. 9. However?by now the woman has been talked into drugging him so her husband and the other crooks can flee. Meanwhile, the villain (conveniently) kills her husband. 10. A fireworks ending reminiscent of *Ride the Pink Horse*. The climax of this film is shown in *Dead Men Don?t Wear Plaid*. - From the late 40's, B&W, first of three MGM films in which the two stars were teamed. - Life imitates art? In her autobio, the beautiful female star said that she and her (very handsome) co-star were having an affair at the time (and this was probably just one of the reasons the man's wife, Barbara Stanwyck, divorced him the next year).
