I think you're referring to *The Sound of Fury* aka/ *Try and Get Me* (1950) starring Frank Lovejoy ("Meet McGraw") and Lloyd Bridges ("Sea Hunt"). Richard Carlson played the yellow journalist. The story was based on the 1933 kidnap/murder of Brooke Hart, son of a San Jose, CA, dept. store owner. The killers were lynched by a mob. Apparently this was the last "public lynching" in the state of California. Other films were made based on the Brooke Hart story, but I think this is the one you're looking for...
