  1. Joseph Cotten was never so much as nominated for an Academy Award?but carried either the lead or main supporting role in the top films of three great directors ? Orson Welles? tour de force *Citizen Kane*, Carol Reed?s *The Third Man* - and who will ever forget him as Uncle Charley in *Shadow of a Doubt* one of the best films of

    *Alfred Hitchcock*

  2. Finance, I was watching and was amazed. I wondered if anyone who had seen my post would notice?

    Back to Miles? question

The movies were *Bride of the Regiment* with Walter Pidgeon and *That Lady in Ermine* with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., the last film of Ernst Lubitsch. Lubitsch died early in the film and was replaced by Otto Preminger.

  3. Actually, Miles, according to Mary Astor?s book, she wasn?t playing the piano heard in *The Great Lie*, Max Rabinovitch was playing off camera while she: ?played on a dummy piano, the music had been simplified so that I could do the arpeggios and octave runs without having to hit every single note, but I had to be right on the nose in the long jumps back and forth between upper and lower registers.? Later there were shots of Norma Boleslavsky?s hands actually playing. Mary Astor termed it a very slick job of film and sound editing?

Meanwhile, your trivia question is still up.

  4. Thanks, Poinciana, great choice and description?

Though my parentage was international, my looks were pure California, so I guess you could say they reflected my birthplace.

I was in a handful of hit movies during my glory days and one or two are considered classics of their (different) genres?I also did much television and one episode of a popular series in which I starred is still remembered by many who watched it.

One of my husbands was a legend in his own right?

    Who am I?

  5. That?s right, Miles. According to Astor in her book, A Life on Film, BD went on to explain that what would work better was ??a different point of view: a constant conflict between Sandra (Astor) and the?sappy southern gal (Davis) who has lost her childhood sweetheart. That would be the story. A declaration of war between the two women and a negotiable but tenuous peace.? Astor won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her efforts. *The Great Lie* airs tonight on TCM?good work, your thread?

  6. Ahhh?that?s the one?Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Florence Bates, Cecil Kellaway, Felix Bressart (what a cast)? an Oscar for special effects and a nomination for cinematography?good work, lavender, your thread?
