  1. Those are the two films and the director. The other film referenced was *Meet Me in St. Louis* - Arthur Freed?s first choice to direct had been Cukor, but Cukor was called up for WWII; it went to Minnelli, becoming the first of his several masterpieces. Good work, your thread?
  2. *Tree, Dolly* - costume design, *The Thin Man*
  3. How about Bosley Crowther, NYT film critic for nearly 30 yrs (which would be justification enough)? His several negative reviews of *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) spelled the end of his reign?
  4. *Top Hat* Bow to the glorious winner
  5. Great guess. The one I?m thinking of takes place in the U.S. It wasn?t a hit when released, but is now considered a fantasy classic. A couple of Oscar nominations with one win. The leading man won an international award.
  6. Yes, that?s me?recently seen in *Two Weeks in Another Town* on TCM?good work, it?s your thread?
  7. Jones, John ? Joel McCrea in *Foreign Correspondent*

  9. Tony Martin and Cyd Charisse (thank you) Dick Van Dyke role in *Mary Poppins* ?Ah, but I was so much older then, I?m younger than that now? from ?My _____ Pages? by the Byrds *Lad: __ Dog* starred Lad what Ronny Cammareri used cool the loaves of bread he baked ?Love ___ Marriage? was introduced by Sinatra in the 1955 TV production of *Our Town* The renegade computer of *2001* Ricky?s big brother
  10. Maybe I should re-phrase that? Time and space (and fantasy and reality) are at the heart of this mystery (and romance)?
  11. Natalie Wood managed to transcend child parts and move on to adult roles thanks to landing the role of Judy in *Rebel Without a Cause*. The film benefitted more than one young performer; it also boosted the career of *Sal Mineo*
  12. Not a bad hunch, but not Miss Stanwyck, who was a bigger star than I was?but we both did play a lot of ?tough dames??
  13. Haines, Polly ? Jane Wyman in *A Kiss in the Dark*
  14. One of Barbara Hutton?s daughters-in-law was *Jill St. John*
  15. *Yours for the Asking* ? End of the local movie theater
  16. Yes, it?s Peter Bogdanovich ? and the film, for AIP, was *Targets*?he was on a roll with *The Last Picture Show*, *What?s Up, Doc?* and *Paper Moon* - but his was a short run as a top director. He continues to be active, tho, and will introduce the screening of *The Lady From Shanghai* at San Francisco?s Castro Theater on April 21 as part of TCM?s ?Road to Hollywood? events. Good work, it?s yours?
  17. Good try, but not the films I?m thinking of?this director?s first big hit, the one sent him to the heights, was originally intended for George Cukor, tho?
  18. Alexei, Count ? John Lodge in *The Scarlet Empress*
