Yes, I am. John Gilbert was one of the biggest stars of the silent era, but his career declined when talkies came in. Though the legend once was that his voice was the problem, it was actually his relationship with L.B. Mayer that at the root of his decline. Gilbert nearly married Greta Garbo. He was later involved at length with Marlene Dietrich. Though reports differ on his year of birth, his daughter?s research revealed that he was 36 when he died of a heart attack. Good work, visual - it?s yours?

Thanks, cujas, that was an excellent ?Do You Know Me? ?just the right mix of information and mystery? I was a very big star in my day and was married to three actresses - and nearly a fourth?two of my lovers were two of the biggest and most glamorous stars of the Golden Age?and they were ?rivals? ? at least as far as the publicity mill went?I was also a screenwriter and director, though most aren?t aware of it. My career went into decline and I believe had Irving Thalberg lived longer, I could?ve successfully come back. But he died young, as did I.

What can you say about a legend? Billy Wilder was one of the greatest of all directors (he also wrote and produced?in fact his gravestone says ?I?M A WRITER but then NOBODY?S PERFECT?). Wilder cannily cast an actor primarily known for his affable good-guy roles as the heavy in two of his films, *Double Indemnity* and *The Apartment*?he was *Fred MacMurray*
