  1. Just out of curiosity, did this film redeem itself with Mayer? It is a good movie and of course Wellman was a terrific director. I am sure Mayer did his best to always put a negative spin on it with Huston, but doesn't he ever have to admit that a movie was good? I guess it was always about the money - that's all that mattered to him. What a shame!

  2. I thought it was my DVR or Directv that made the mistake. I didn't think about it being TCM's fault. I was really caught up in the conversation between them and couldn't believe it when the movie stopped.

Has anyone seen it before? Does anyone out there know what happened?

  3. Yes, I can imagine Vivien Leigh as Rebecca. Can't you just see the look on Vivien's face (from the grave), as she looks at her husband's new wife? And Vivien Leigh probably would have gotten along beautifully with Judith Anderson as her maid!

  4. That when escaping by a window, whoever is being chased will wait until the police are sure to see that he has is escaping that way. Also, it seems as though the same pair of sheer white curtains is always on that window, blowing from the wind - to make sure the police don't miss the clue!.

  5. I have seen Born To Bad but it has been a long, long time ago. From what I remember Robert Ryan did do a great job of handling her. I think this was shown on TCM not long ago, but I missed it. Next time around I'll try to DVR it - would like to see it again.

  6. It's also nice to see the Lane sisters in a casual photo. I always thought Priscilla Lane beautiful was beautiful. I wish she had made more movies or that I had seen more of her movies.

  7. Hi Larry,

I can see Margaret Sullivan, but I don't think that Anita Louise would have worked very well. And as for Vivien Leigh - yes she was too pretty for the part, but she also had a fire in her eyes that I don't think they couldn't have hidden. I think she would have also outshown Olivier and he had too strong a part for that. The movie wouldn't have worked as well as it did. And, let's face it, it did work well. This is probably one of my favorites (along with Notorious) of the Hitchcock's films.

Believe it or not, I am not a big fan of Fontaine. I liked her in this, Suspicion, and The Women - well I can't think of anymore. So, I am not her champion - I just think this part was ready made for her.

  8. I think Joan was perfect for the part. And as for who else could have played that part, I don't think there could have been a better fit. The part called for a shy, almost mousey girl. I really cannot think of another major or minor actress who could have pulled off the "plain Jane" look and at the same time appear to have the reticence yet clear concern for "Maxim." The naivety she displayed was done so well, when in his hotel room, he called for her luggage to be brought back into the hotel. - she asked him if he needed a "secretary or something." No one was more surprised than Joan when he told her he was going to marry her. To me that was true acting - because I don't think Joan Fontaine was shy at all. She knew what she wanted and went after it. And this part was truly Oscar worthy. I feel that the reason she got the Oscar for Suspicion was because voters felt she should have won it for Rebecca. She did a great job in Suspicion, but Rebecca was better (to me.)

  9. Don't you imagine that those suitcases that they "carried" were empty. Then another scene was shot with clothes in them. They almost had to be when you see one man carrying 5 suitcases at a time!

You know, whenever the actor goes to the front desk, there is always someone ready and waiting to help him. How often does that happen anywhere?

  10. I have Directv and in order to get TCM, I have to go to the next level. I don't watch HBO or any of the other premium channels - but, I could not live without TCM. What is the name of the thread where this is being discussed? I would like to read what people have to say.

  11. Thank you for the info. That is very interesting. I knew that for a long time TCM or Turner channels were the only ones that could air Gone With The Wind. Also NBC obviously, is the only channel that has the right to air It's A Wonderful Life - at least for the time being. I assumed that certain films (The High And The Mighty) were held by companies, families, trusts, etc. and only shown or released on their terms. With all the movies shown on TCM and without commercial advertising to sponser these movies, how does Turner do it? Does he earn so much from his other holdings that he can pay for this? I can't imagine that he is doing this for philanthropy. As much as I have read, watched, and studied about movies and movie stars, I really feel stupid right at this moment because I never thought about this before.

  12. SansFin - Do you mean the TCM will have to acquire the license to show it again? I didn't realize that once a license was acquired, that it had to be renewed. I just never thought about it before. If that's the case, do they have to do that with every film they air?

  13. I don't know when they are going to play it. I, too, was disappointed that Rebecca is not included in February's "31 Days Of Oscar". Looks like I am going to have to order the DVD. I love that movie. Although her performance in Suspicion was great, I think she should have won the Oscar for Rebecca. She was terrific in that role - perfect for it! Hitchcock should have won the Oscar also.

  14. I agree with you Jack - I love finding little jewels. I even like the murder mysteries they show early in the mornings. And I think that the fact that they are black & white, makes them even more mysterious. I truly love the "Saint" movies. George Sanders was a great character actor. I also love it when I can spot a future star in a minor supporting role. This past Saturday morning there was a movie "Counter-Espionage" with Warren William in one of his rogue detective roles. Lloyd Bridges played a waiter in it - he spoke a couple of lines. He didn't even get screen credit, but it was Lloyd Bridges.

  15. You betcha Dargo. :)

Another one is that they are always able to find a parking space right in front of the building where they want to go. Think about it - have you ever seen a movie with someone looking for a parking space? The only parking lot scene I can think of is in "Fried Green Tomatoes", and that was only because it was part of the story.

  16. I love Michael Caine, so I can take Gambit because of him. But I don't think it is a great movie. However, it is much better to me than Games because I find James Caan unbearable. He became so arrogant after he won the Oscar for playing Sonny in The Godfather, that I can't stand to watch him in anything except Misery - and that's only because he is the victim in that movie.

I loved One Touch Of Venus - I was probably about 12 or 13 when I first saw it and thought it was the most romantic movie I had seen up until that time. For years, I couldn't remember the title. Back then we didn't have the resources to find out about these movies. I could remember the plot, Ava Gardner, and the song "When You Speak Low", but that was it. It took me years of buying books about movies to finally find out what it was. And even then, it wasn't out on video. I finally saw that it was on one Saturday in the middle of the night and taped it so that I could finally watch it again.

You have to remember that we in Nashville didn't get VCR's until 1977, so if you wanted to watch a classic, you had to stay up to watch it. I didn't get to see Citizen Kane until 1977 (before we got a VCR). It came on at 2:00 AM and I stayed up to watch it on a local station. We didn't get cable out where I lived until probably the mid 80's. And of course, I didn't get TCM until 1998 when I moved into a condo where I could get Comcast. Thank God for TCM - I really mean that!

Sorry to go on for so long - thanks for indulging an old woman's ramblings!

  17. In response to NiqueGata, the title of the film you are looking for is "Our Mother's House". Dirk stars as the long lost father who comes home to find the mother has died. He is not a nice guy. I will not reveal more because you ought to see it again. This was made in 1967, produced by Allied Films and distributed by MGM. It has the look of a totally British production, but it was made in America with probably a mostly British cast! You might be able to find this at Netflix or Blockbuster. It is a really good movie - I had not planned to watch it all, but couldn't leave the screen. Enjoy!!!
