  1. MissGoddess - I too, loved Tony Randall - he was a terrific actor. I particularly like the role he played in Send Me No Flowers when he is writing Hudson's eulogy. I think that is hilarious. He added so much to every film he was in. Did you know that he has his own acting company on Broadway? He helped many new actors get started with classes, workshops, etc. He was dearly loved in the Broadway community. I used to love him on the late night talk shows. He was really witty. I cried when I heard that he had died. Thank God we have his movies and TCM on which to watch all his movies.

  2. Well Jack, if you liked this one, you will be even happier with Pillow Talk and Send Me No Flowers. I think they are better than Lover Come Back. But my favorite Doris Day comedy is The Thrill of it All with James Garner. All three of these movies are really good. My favorite with Rock Hudson is Send Me No Flowers - I think it is funnier than the other two. You probably have a good chance to see all three of these movies in April - Robert Osborne announced after the movie last night that Doris Day is the Star Of The Month in April. So enjoy, you are in for a real treat! They are showing 28 of her movies.

Oh, and by the way, I suspect Doris Day had great hair, but she also had hair stylists on the sets and she used hair pieces to make her hair look so perfect all the time.

  3. In response to bmajor, could it be that this movie is "Malice"? It starred Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, and Bill Pullman and I think it was done in '95. I think that Baldwin and Kidman murdered Pullman and then Baldwin double-crossed Kidman to frame her for the murder. I may have this plot all screwed up, but this might be the movie you saw.

  4. Thanks for the advice. I didn't watch Red River until last year and I was really pleased. Because of all that I have read from this site, this movie sounds interesting to me. I have also come to appreciate so many of the older movies because of all the work that was done to make the storyline work without all the special effects that are used today. I may be disappointed but because you have warned me, I will be watching with that in mind.

  5. In response to Bronxgirl48, believe it or not Slezak does a pretty good job as a Nazi "fat cat" sneaking around Europe selling the Nazi doctrine to the different contries. He is very believable as the sleazy husband. And everybody's points about the drama and comedy have been right on target. I really want to see this movie again because I want to see the different points that I seemed to have missed.

Happy New Year to everyone - you have made 2011 an enjoyable year for me.

  6. I consider myself to be well informed on classic movies. So, I am embarrassed to say that I have never watched "The Searchers." I intended to watch it today and forgot. I will look for it again and if nothing else, DVR it so that I do not miss it. I have never been crazy about westerns but have seen my fair share. Obviously this is a "must see" and from everything you all have said about it, I need to see it!

    Happy New Year!

  7. In reply to "rohanaka", I totally agree about Once Upon A Honeymoon. I had never watched it before the other night - it was really good. The description on my Directv screen said that it was a comedy. I would say that it was more of a drama than a comedy and I really liked the way they treated the Nazi conspirators. As much as I love Cary Grant, he made some movies that were not my favorites - one being with Ann Sheridan - I Was A Male War Bride? I think that was the title and I really didn't like it at all. I was afraid that this might be like that, but was pleasantly surprised. Glad to see that someone else appreciated it.

  8. As much as I love "Bringing Up Baby", it seems to me that it has been the Saturday night movie with Alec Baldwin about 3 times in the past year. Is it my imagination or could this possibly be a rerun because of Robert Osborne's vacation? I think maybe last week's "Caine Mutiny" might also have been a rerun?

  9. I definitely think Carson could have played Willie Stark - he would have been great in that role. And what a shame that he never had that chance. I think he was a strong enough actor to carry a movie on his shoulders. And, not to take away from Broderick Crawford, I think Carson would have done just as good a job with that character. Do you suppose that, by that time he had already irritated some people with the "chip on his shoulder"? He certainly had been on screen long enough - I wonder if he even tried out for the part?

  10. Jack Carson was a terrific actor. He not only had a chip on his shoulder in some of his movies, but he had one in real life as well. From what I have read, he deeply resented playing the "second banana" most of his career. From my point of view, there are many movies that were truly enriched by his presence - actually too many for me to mention!

  11. I loved her when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's and I still love her. Yes, I guess you could say she made some sappy movies, but she made an awful lot of good movies, too. I loved her in movies like "I'll See You In My Dreams" and "The Winning Team", as well as "Young At Heart". But she also made movies that required a lot of drama - Love Me Or Leave Me, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Julie, and Midnight Lace.

And a whole new generation of movie watchers are discovering films like The Thrill Of It All and Send Me No Flowers. And just how good an actress is she - I am always on the edge of my seat when in The Man Who Knew Too Much, we are watching her waiting for the orchestra to reach that crescendo when the assassin tries to kill his target. You can feel her anguish. You can also feel her anguish when in Young At Heart, she is crying because she thinks her husband (Frank Sinatra) is dying. She worked very hard, made a lot of different movies that required different skills. And she also had a beautiful voice, and didn't have to take her clothes off to look beautiful and sexy. While she may not appeal to some, she certainly does to others. I think she was and is great.

  12. I can't wait to see it. I am taking my grandchildren and hopefully they will grasp the classic movie craze that I have had since I was a child. I introduced my children to classic movies when they were growing up in the 70's and 80's. They first learned about Teddy Roosevelt through Arsenic And Old Lace. As far as I am concerned movie history is just as important as printed history. And I have a feeling from what everyone has said, that Hugo is going to be a classic.

  13. I am new to this thread - I am joining in because I have never heard anyone say that they didn't like Katherine Hepburn. I think a little of Kate goes a long way. However, I do think she was a very good actress. Bringing Up Baby is my favorite movie of all time. I do agree that you always know that you are watching Katherine Hepburn - she had such a strong personality that her presence was hard to ignore. But some people say that about Bette Davis and I think she was the best actress of all time. I think it is a question of personal likes and dislikes, and while I am not crazy about her, I think she added a lot to the industry in general.
