Dear FredCDobbs,
If "They" didn't want us to comment on people's posts; then they should have removed the "Reply" button from the forum. Since they didn't, we must assume that you and your rantings about "RULES" are full of "IT" and you should just SHUT UP about it. <

Dear Joe,
I hope you don't mind me addressing this topic. But, It is my understanding that the actual vote count of the "Oscar" races are never publicized. And, that that has been true for the entire history of the MPAAS. So, there couldn't have been any such announcement as "She lost by just one vote.".
Sincerely,
Bruce

My undertanding of the origins of the Academy Awards Ceremony is that it was a condition of a strike settlement in the 1920's between the studios and the actors & technicians.
"Oscar" has ignored many talented actors that have entertained the public for all of their careers. Though James Stewart won for "The Philadelphia Story" early in his career. He never won again. John Wayne was nominated several times and never won for some of his best work. He never got an Oscar until the Academy thought he was dying of Cancer. But, Duke fooled them and lived on to make more movies. Henry Fonda made hundreds of movies and never won until a couple of weeks before he DID died. It is a shame that "Oscar" feels he can only reward dramatic excellence and ignores the mainstream and comedy. "Oscar" falls back on "Special" awards when they discover that they have ignored a career of entertaining. Charlie Chaplin is another artist that missed out on "Oscar" and got a "Special". As did Gary Cooper. There are probably many other such examples but, these are the ones on the top of my head.

I think you left out the most obvious; Merle Streep. And, I can tell you why she hasn't been nominated since. The Academy realized that this woman (of limited talent, IMO) was about to equal the great Bettie Davis in Oscar wins. With a total of only three nominations to her credit and a film career of as many movies. The Academy could simply not tolerate such an impudent affront to such a talented actress as Miss. Davis. So, they seem to have, politely, told Miss. Streep; "You'll never work in this town again.", and, she hasn't.
Of course, I may be wrong. <

TCM has shown several short biographies of supporting actors such as Frank McHugh and Eve Arden. There were many such ?bit? players at the major studios during Hollywood?s ?Golden Age?. Why aren't there more such short biographies on TCM?
