  1. So, skimpole, your schedule made me happy-- seeing TOTORO, RASHOMON, and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES right off the bat, for one thing. Then lots of awesome movies throughout. Great way to do Christmastime. Great having a foreign film for the Essentials. Yay.

By the way, Moderator, my Columbia tribute was too long for an evening, so instead it's daytime. Hope that's okay. I think when you see the list of films, you'll see why I couldn't narrow it down.

  2. I must say it's awesome to do a whole day for Toshiro Mifune. American Stars get so much attention, it's nice to spread the love around to character actors and our Foreign Film Stars, especially someone who, in thise case, is such an amazing performer. (Takashi Shimura would be another good candidate someday.)

  3. Capuchin, how ridiculously good you are! I love all the plays on "if TCM programmers were on other networks" (great excuse to schedule one of my favorite musicals of al time, HOW TO SUCCEED). Plus showing two of my favorite Christmas movies in June is awesome (CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT and SCROOGE-- my favorite version of that tale). Plus I thought it was quite innovative, as it were, to show a silent version of OLIVER TWIST instead of going for either of the two famous ones. And Basil Rathbone as SOTM will be tough to beat for my vote. It would be cool if TCM used him: you could have one whole night for his Sherlock movies and another for his swashbuckling movies. Great choice. All Hail Character Actors!

Working on mine as we speak...

  4. Nice, countess. Very original to honor a studio--and THAT studio is an excellent choice. So many amazing films and artists from that studio. My brain is spinning already. Pretty excited about this one.

May I add, for newcomers, that this is the best way I know to request a film. I've had many a Premiere wind up on TCM, and I know the others have, too. The TCM Programmer(s) read this and sometimes copy these ideas. That is the greatest prize of all. Plus it's really fun. So join us!

  5. Keenan Wynn is a character actor who is the son of a character actor-- double the fun!

Favorite Keenan Wynn quote is from Finian's Rainbow (and this may not be exact, but you get the idea): "My family has had nothing but trouble from immigrants ever since they came to this country!"

  6. That makes sense. I didn't think it was a Disney production-- hence why I said I saw it on that channel and not that it was a Disney movie. Didn't want to give credit where credit wasn't due.

A disney olympic movie I do like is "Miracle" -- not a "great" movie, but I enjoy it.

  7. There are a fair few Olympic themed movies out there, which is your favorite?

I have to say, as much as I love the "famous ones", my favorite was this miniseries (or 4 hour TV-movie, I guess) that I saw on the Disney Channel back in the '80s (back when the Disney Channel was cool and not just for pre-teens and under). It was called *THE FIRST OLYMPICS: ATHENS 1896.* the only cast members I remember were David Ogden Stiers and Louis Jourdan. It was so interesting to learn about how the modern olympics got started, how hard it was to get anyone on board to participate or sponsor (my how things have changed), how the athletes had to figure out the events from looking at pictures ancient pots, how we didn't have a national anthem at the time, how the American team almost didn't make it because the Greeks were on a different calendar, and other interesting bits of trivia. As Roger De Bris would say, "It's just full of historical goodies like that!" Not sure if y'all saw that, but it has stuck with me since I saw it as a little kid.

  8. Best speaking voice as in "beautiful" for me (since Morgan Freeman is still working, so not purely a classic actor), it's gotta be Gregory Peck.

Best speaking voice in terms of "interesting voice", well, I think Eugene Pallette has such an interesting voice.

Best use of their voice to me is Maggie Smith-- she finds such interesting ways to say things. But most Brits do. If she's not "classic" enough, then Lionel Barrymore wins.

Best singing voice? Well, for me, as a swoony chick who loves male singers, nothing beats Howard Keel. Though Gordon MacRae is a close contender.

  9. And don't forget, *Dick Powell* is really playing the piano in GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933

And *Dub Taylor* was actually hired for YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU because he could play the xylophone (plus he rocks)

Plus, apparently *James Stewart* could play the accordion and is actually playing it in DEAR BRIGITTE

  10. Although I don't think TCM should start just showing Bonanza episodes everyday, I think there is a place on TCM for classic TV movies, especially if they have classic movie ties. Of course I'd like to see things they don't show anywhere else-- like Sondheim's original TV musical EVENING PRIMROSE, or the original 1964 TV version of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS that my parents keep talking about, or Rosalind Russell reprising the role she created on Broadway in the TV version of WONDERFUL TOWN. (I like musicals, can you tell?) That type of thing would be so cool--once in a great while, of course, when it fits the theme of the night or month. But some of these you can't find anywhere. We preserve movies, why not TV movies?
