Favorite movie by a director you otherwise don't care for
LonesomePolecat replied to skimpole's topic in General Discussions
Picnic (Joshua Logan-- this is assuming Mr Roberts doesn't count since he didn't direct it himself) American Graffiti (George Lucas--not a fan of his directing abilities) -
I'd like to thank TCM for showing all the Melies films before this movie came out (when was that, a year ago?) so that when they showed pictures, clips, and redid the some of the films I felt so smart that I'd already seen them! I really enjoyed this movie and agree about supporting films that encourage people to rediscover and appreciate the early filmmaking pionners. Although, I must say, my favorite part was Martin Scorsese's cameo.

I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!! How I enjoy these recipes. And how Babette's Feast makes me hungry. casablancalover- thanks for posting that Tuna Popovers recipe. Everytime I watch THE DEVIL AND MISS JONES I want to try those things. I love baking especially, so I must share my awesome No Bake Cookies recipe that I learned in college. And here is my movie connection: I live in LA, which is movie town. And I share this one because here in LA it is 75-80 degrees and therefore too warm to turn on the oven. LP'S AWARD WINNING NO BAKE COOKIES Put all these ingredients in a medium sized pot on the stove: -2 cups sugar -1/2 cup milk -3 Tbsp baking cocoa -1/2 cup (aka 1 stick) butter, margarine, or whatever you like Mix the ingredients together. Turn on the heat and keep mixing. Let it actually boil for 1 minute, mixing constantly, then turn off the heat. Beat these ingredients in very quickly: 3 1/2 cup oats 1/2-1 cup chunky peanut butter 1 tsp vanilla Drop onto foil and let cool. Once they are hard, gobble them up with glee. If giving away as gifts, make everyone believe it took hours to make these easy cookies.

Some of these lookalikes are scary! Not sure if it's been mentioned, or if I'm the only one, but I always got Jeanne Crain and Gene Tierney mixed up. Not that they look remarkably alike when right next to each other, but when apart I often mistake them. (And it's not just their first names).

Whoa--that's the same guy?!
LonesomePolecat replied to LonesomePolecat's topic in General Discussions
Whoa--that's him in that Twilight Zone episode? I did not recognize him at all! He really is amazing, isn't he? I used to go through this with Alec Guinness all the time. And Alan Arkin too. -
I began my holiday film viewing this weekend and this included THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER. For the first time in my life I actually read the credits and in so doing read the name "Joseph Schildkraut". I thought, "Wait--isn't that Otto Frank?" I checked my DVD of DIARY OF ANNE FRANK and I was right. To think that all this time Otto Frank was in SHOP AROUND THE CORNER and I never knew. Finally the cast list came up and I realized--holy cow-- Otto Frank was the slimy Mr Vadas! I have seen both of these movies my entire life and never recognized him. Either he is an incredible actor or I am blind. Or both. Amazing! Has this ever happened to you?

Oh-- and Bill Cosby was sure awesome on the classic TV show I SPY. Got to do lots of dramatic stuff on there.
-
Well he's not a "comedian", but he's mostly a comic actor, so I'll mention that I love Fred MacMurray most in THE APARTMENT.

4) Director Stanley Donen wanted to film this on location, but didn't have the money because that part of the budget was used to make a 35mm version of the film. Although this was a Cinemascope film, at the time it was made not all theaters could show Cinemascope, so the studio had Stanley Donen reshoot everything in 35mm so the studio wouldn't lose money. Of course, by the time the film came out, pretty much every theater could show Cinemascope films, and the 35mm never saw the light of day. (This is taken from Stanley Donen's interview on Private Screenings)

Titanic movie marathon for 100th anniversary
LonesomePolecat replied to LaFleur's topic in General Discussions
Mr Roberts, that is an excellent suggestion! -
Great choices, Dominick. Some of those I haven't even heard of, which makes them even better choices. To recommend some essentials, I'd need to define what an essential is, which I've never gotten a straight answer on. Is it 1. "If you only see 100 movies before you die, these will change your life (like Seven Samurai)" OR 2. "These are the basics (like Citizen Kane)" OR 3. "Well we assume you've seen the basics, so here are some you might not have really even heard of (like Ikiru)" Which?

Steamboat WIllie makes me so happy. I whistle that little ditty all the time. I enjoy it most at Disneyland in the Main Street Theater.

10- the Director of Photography wanted to photograph Jeff's cop friend in his office as he is talking on the phone to Jeff. But Hitchcock ran such a tight ship he already knew what he wanted, exactly what he wanted, and said "No." They asked why they couldn't get this extra footage and he said, "Because they'll use it." Sorry, my internet has been down all week (arg). That and I thought this was a "post your answer and the new question" and not a "wait for verification" thread. Which is it? But, yes, it was The Wrong Man.

Titanic movie marathon for 100th anniversary
LonesomePolecat replied to LaFleur's topic in General Discussions
And don't forget Cavalcade and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Oh, that the Screen Director's Playhouse episode about the Titanic. But I too would be happy just watching A NIGHT TO REMEMBER about forty-three times. -
Do you watch the Academy Awards every year?
LonesomePolecat replied to MontyC's topic in General Discussions
Yes, but I record them and fast forward the commercials, speeches, Twilight presenters, and other silliness I don't care about. Same with the Tony awards. Those are the only awards shows I watch. So excited this year for BILLY CRYSTAL! -

*West Side Lady* Those Sharks, Jets, and their girls just don't know how to speak correctly! This causes Henry Higgins to come to New York and say, "Why can't New York teach its gangsters how to speak?" He trains Riff's girlfriend Graziella the correct way to say, "The rain in Brooklyn stays mainly in The Bronx." Once trained to speak better, he takes her to mingle with high society types at a Broadway opening. Unfortunately he didn't teach her what to say, so she cusses out David Merrick. She is embarrassed, but the New York Times Theater Critic falls in love with her anyway and they run off together. Meanwhile the Jets decide they are jealous of Henry Higgins and his plans of gentrification for the neighborhood, so they have a rumble and kill him. He dies singing, "I've grown accustomed to this place..."

I adore Platinum Blonde, especially it's screenplay. It's probably my favorite Jean Harlow performance and definitely my favorite Loretta Young performance. That famous kising scene through that art deco fountain is so beautiful. Great movie, great characters.
