Actors/Actresses Who IRRITATE You!
LonesomePolecat replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
Hooray! I'm not the only one who hates Ben Afleck! I have come to not mind Matt Damon, once I realized he could actually kind of act sometimes, or at least attempt to create some other character, but I want Ben Afleck's career to shrivel up and die. I'm sick of seeing him around. -
Worst Casting Compilation Thread

Although I am embarrassed by pretty much every time a white person was cast as an Asian person, Brando in Teahouse of the August Moon is one of the rare exceptions that doesn't bother me. maybe because he plays it so well and so convincingly, or maybe because he went to the studio heads and asked to play that part. -
I too did not plan on watching this one either. But by some twist of fate my dad was home from work and watching TCM (as usual), and when I got home he said, "You have to watch this!" It really sucked me in. Why is this noir not better thought of? I think it's a very clever whodunit that actually makes you wonder who the killer is by making everyone seem suspicious. The cast is great and very interesting. Yet another good movie TCM introduced me to!

I ADORE that one! It's one of the best-- right up there with Great Pumpkin and the first Christmas special. I would love to see it again, since it's not even on DVD, alas.

Vincent Price Centennial~Why not TCM?
LonesomePolecat replied to Kinokima's topic in General Discussions
Maybe they're saving it for October.... I do know some of his movies are in the public domain now, or however that works. But I'd love to see some Price as well. -
You know you are addicted to TCM if...
LonesomePolecat replied to CjHuthmaker's topic in General Discussions
Way too many of these apply to me. But that's a good thing. I can quit anytime I want to, only, I don't want to. Here's a few more that actually apply to my family. You know you're addicted to TCM if.... ...when someone mentions "Maltese Falcon," you say, "Which version?" ...you see one frame of a movie through a window and know exactly what movie they're watching, who stars in it, what part of the movie it is, and what line comes next ...you recognize John Ford's stock character cast as old friends ...you can name all the Best Picture winners, and offer suggestions for who should have won ...February 14 means it's the middle of 31 Days of Oscar, not Valentine's Day ...you know the Marx Bros' real names, even Gummo ...you can tell the "Thin Man" movies apart ...you can tell the Busby Berkely musicals apart ...when other people talk about "Dancing With The Stars", you think it's a Fred and Ginger marathon -

The 19th TCM Programming Challenge Is Coming!

Ever since I made my first schedule, I spend my entire life thinking of themes and ways to link films together. Of course I'm in! Can't wait to see what you come up with. -
Was This Board Included at Film Festival?
LonesomePolecat replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
yeah, it would have been nice to go to the festival. I actually already live here too. I just don't have the money. But being a resident means I can easily say, "Next time, baby!" And, yes, I am perpetually on the watch for programming ideas. When is the challenge? I haven't seen a thread at all. -
Strange Casting Decisions with Wonderful Results
LonesomePolecat replied to JefCostello's topic in General Discussions
I see how you say the character in Double Indemnity is sleazy, but it's still not as sleazy as the guy in The Apartment. I think because in The Apartment he's a long standing jerk who doesn't seem to care about how his actions affect anyone else, whereas in Double Indemnity, he is the Regular Guy who gets dragged down a dark path because of the attraction to Barbara Stanwyck. So The Apartment is kind of the next step. He does make a terrific jerk though. -
Strange Casting Decisions with Wonderful Results
LonesomePolecat replied to JefCostello's topic in General Discussions
The biggest one for me is Fred MacMurray in THE APARTMENT -- who knew he would fit that part so well? Completely against type, which is what makes it work so well! Brilliant. The one I always think of when someone brings this up, however, is actually from a miniseries back in the '90s. There was a PBS version of REBECCA that cast Diana Rigg of all people as Mrs Danvers. It was so awesome! Plus, for a stage example, Yul Brynner was a complete unknown when he was cast as The King in The King and I. But they thought he was good and took a chance. The result was that by the end, everyone came to see the show for him. This thing started as a Gertrude Lawrence star vehicle and became Yul's show. It's great when a director can make a daring casting decision, but I think it depends on the reason for the decision. -

This is very interesting. TCM employees actually follow some posters? How fun it would be to have them come up to you, or whoever, saying "Hey, wow, I'm actually meeting SueSue in person!" Wish I had the money to go, but someday I will be there. -
Seems like we're talking about two types of films from the 60s: the innocent family films, like Mr Hobbes, and the Loss of Innocence films. Is that right? I see a lot of both types from that era. Odd combination.

That's a great song from "Robin and the Seven Hoods", called "You either got or you haven't got style", or maybe just "Style", sung by the great Sinatra, Crosby, and Martin! Next: Name song and singer and film, and if you're smart, song writer and lyricist for these clever lines "The birds and bees with all of their vast Amorous past Gaze at the human race aghast!" (p.s. Miles -- it's too funny you mentioning "Crazy For You" because I was just talking to someone who wants to be in my upcoming production and came on this thread hoping I could use some lyrics from it as the next clue, but I'm not going to now. I have a video of the Broadway show "Crazy For You" back when it was on PBS and I think everyone should try to see it. It's so fun. Cujas, you should definitely watch it)

My favorite living male actor just happens to be Lebanese--- Tony Shalhoub! -
My favorite ones just to listen to are The Sting (Lucky Dan, your name reminded me of that one), Fantasia, North by Northwest, Magnificent Seven, Gone With the Wind, and the classic themes of John Williams, my favorite, however, being To Kill a Mockingbird. But I also adore the scores to Citizen Kane and Vertigo, though I can't just listen to them anytime. As a child of the 90s there are a LOT of film scores from that era that I adore (i.e. Hook, Little WOmen, Little Princess, Much Ado About Nothing, Sense and Sensibility...). More than anything though I listen to the lovely sounds of film musicals.

For bad casting I hate when a cast is extremely unbalanced. I think if both (or all) actors are equally matched, even if they're not the best themselves, it's better than if one is amazing and the rest are mediocre. For example, in SAYONARA, poor Marlon Brando has to act opposite whatshername (the chick he's engaged to) who is just not worthy of his abilities. She and Ricardo Montalban are not as good, or don't give as good performances, as Brando, Red Buttons, and Miyoshi Umeki, so it's really annoying. Whereas Howard Keel isn't the best actor, and neither is Kathryn Grayson, but when they're together they seem well cast. Ergo, balance is the main thing in casting, for my taste. -
