  1. Hooray! I'm not the only one who hates Ben Afleck! I have come to not mind Matt Damon, once I realized he could actually kind of act sometimes, or at least attempt to create some other character, but I want Ben Afleck's career to shrivel up and die. I'm sick of seeing him around.

  2. Although I am embarrassed by pretty much every time a white person was cast as an Asian person, Brando in Teahouse of the August Moon is one of the rare exceptions that doesn't bother me. maybe because he plays it so well and so convincingly, or maybe because he went to the studio heads and asked to play that part.

  3. I too did not plan on watching this one either. But by some twist of fate my dad was home from work and watching TCM (as usual), and when I got home he said, "You have to watch this!" It really sucked me in. Why is this noir not better thought of? I think it's a very clever whodunit that actually makes you wonder who the killer is by making everyone seem suspicious. The cast is great and very interesting. Yet another good movie TCM introduced me to!

  4. Too many for me, mostly because bad things happen over a series of many days. But the worst ones are when a bunch of bad things happen in succession--things that, if it was only one of them happening, it wouldn't ruin your whole day, but when they happen on the same day, by 3pm I'm thinking, "Can I just go back to bed and start over?"

Probably one of the worst was the day my uncle went out to kill himself and the extended family was getting drunk and blaming each other. Dad went out to find him and my aunt blamed my mom who ran out in a fury, leaving my poor brother and I alone in the fray. (Luckilly there was a park nearby to escape to, and the uncle didn't kill himself.)

  5. Way too many of these apply to me. But that's a good thing. I can quit anytime I want to, only, I don't want to.

Here's a few more that actually apply to my family.

You know you're addicted to TCM if....

...when someone mentions "Maltese Falcon," you say, "Which version?"

...you see one frame of a movie through a window and know exactly what movie they're watching, who stars in it, what part of the movie it is, and what line comes next

...you recognize John Ford's stock character cast as old friends

...you can name all the Best Picture winners, and offer suggestions for who should have won

...February 14 means it's the middle of 31 Days of Oscar, not Valentine's Day

...you know the Marx Bros' real names, even Gummo

...you can tell the "Thin Man" movies apart

...you can tell the Busby Berkely musicals apart

...when other people talk about "Dancing With The Stars", you think it's a Fred and Ginger marathon

  6. I see how you say the character in Double Indemnity is sleazy, but it's still not as sleazy as the guy in The Apartment. I think because in The Apartment he's a long standing jerk who doesn't seem to care about how his actions affect anyone else, whereas in Double Indemnity, he is the Regular Guy who gets dragged down a dark path because of the attraction to Barbara Stanwyck. So The Apartment is kind of the next step. He does make a terrific jerk though.

  7. The biggest one for me is Fred MacMurray in THE APARTMENT -- who knew he would fit that part so well? Completely against type, which is what makes it work so well! Brilliant.

The one I always think of when someone brings this up, however, is actually from a miniseries back in the '90s. There was a PBS version of REBECCA that cast Diana Rigg of all people as Mrs Danvers. It was so awesome!

Plus, for a stage example, Yul Brynner was a complete unknown when he was cast as The King in The King and I. But they thought he was good and took a chance. The result was that by the end, everyone came to see the show for him. This thing started as a Gertrude Lawrence star vehicle and became Yul's show.

It's great when a director can make a daring casting decision, but I think it depends on the reason for the decision.
