  1. At the risk of sounding too old-fashioned, I would have to say I always found Gene Wilder to be quite charismatic. He may not be handsome in the way that Depp is, but he usually came across as a genuinely nice, goofy kind of guy. He was great in the movies he made with Richard Pryor, and also in "The Frisco Kid", with Harrison Ford. And that's without even mentioning "The Producers" and all the great Mel Brooks comedies.

  2. > Oh, I didn't mean it that way! I just meant that people expected something different in movie posters back then than what they expect now.

Oh, I think I know exactly what you meant! :P

Anyway, "San Antonio" is on tomorrow, in case you haven't seen it. It's a pretty good western, especially if you like stuff in color. ;)

  3. captainnemo, some folks are about to start discussing "Rio Bravo" in the Western Rambles Thread, which you can find in the Westerns forum, if you're interested in joining in. I'll try to re-visit the movie shortly, but I can't be sure when I'll get around to it. Should make for an interesting discussion, though.

  4. > Well I still don't have a top 25 list, but I do think I'll be putting In a Lonely Place on it. I just don't know how I'll rank it. But I definitely want to include it. It's such a great movie.

To be frank, I'm not much for lists, but I think this movie definitely deserves all the recognition it has gotten, and maybe even more. It also happens to be one of Nicholas Ray's finest, imho.

Actually, I think it may have even been selected for the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress. I should check on that.

  5. Yes, it's true, I may have missed out on some good stuff, up to now. But if it's good enough, I imagine I'll get around to it eventually. One that I believe was made for TV or cable was a recent version of "Porgy and Bess". From what I have read, it might be better than Otto Preminger's theatrical version. In any case, I do hope to watch whichever one of the two is the better one, eventually.

  6. > But how sad that movie clips now have to be labeled with "no copyright infringement intended". I hope they don't start removing those.

In so many ways, I see the movie studios making some of the same mistakes the music companies made before them. But maybe stuff like the Warner Archives will become more popular and provide a legit way to download movies that aren't otherwise available on home video.

Speaking of "Knight Without Armor", that's one movie I wouldn't mind buying from the Warner Archives, if they ever made it available. Never mind that I am just finishing up recording it on DVD-R. :P

  7. Well I didn't get to watch the made-for-TV version, but I would love to watch it if it's on video. As for the Farrelly brothers, they're good for some laughs (and sometimes very cheap laughs!) but I don't think they're going to go for much drama or real-life stuff at all, so I agree with you on this one.

If it's funny enough, it just might introduce a whole new generation to the "Three Stooges", and get them hooked on the all the classic shorts and features.

  8. > Well, it really is rather sad to see that ad, actually. Didn't the Duke die of lung cancer? :(

Actually, you're half right, I think he died of lung and stomach cancer, but in any event, I guess now that you mention it you're probably right, looking at that ad is kind of bittersweet, although of course I'm sure he wasn't the only Hollywood star to have endorsed cigarettes at some point or another who also suffered from lung cancer.

  9. > I wonder if In a Lonely Place will make Rick's top 25 favorite film noir list?

If I were going to bet on it, I'd say it would definitely be on almost everyone's top 25 list. Of course, I'm sure there's bound to be at least _one_ exception. :P

  10. > Maybe movie rambles go better with Dr Pepper. ;)

Hey, whatever helps you keep on ramblin'! ;)

Speaking of vintage ads, I don't smoke, but if I did, I'd be pretty tempted to try the same brand as the Duke:

  11. They remade *South Pacific* ? Really? When was that? I missed it.

I do agree on *Camelot*, which really should have been better. The same for *Man of La Mancha*, which just didn't do justice to the stage musical.

A long time ago, they were talking about an animated adaptation of *Cats*, a project which I guess was abandoned when they put out a DVD of the Broadway version. I do wish they'd reconsider making it as an animated movie.
