  1. That thread came out beautifully, pk! I never would have guessed that the "trek" in your moniker referred to that classic TV show! :P

It's probably a good time to be a trekker, though, what with the new movie coming out and what not. B-)

    Live Long and Prosper! ;)

To keep in on-topic... how about Kim Jong Il in the movie *Team America: World Police*...

I never got to watch it, unfortunately. And from what it says on imdb, it's not out on DVD.

I'd be very interested to see Carradine's interpretation of the character, though.

I think that's an excellent movie, not just because of the performances, which are very good, but also for Peter Jackson's excellent use of imagery to give the movie a somewhat surrealist touch.

  5. musicalnovelty,

That was really a terrific question! I was surprised to see how closely Alan Ladd fits the description that is given in the book. It's almost like the book had been written with him in mind for the part!

A little has been said already about the Biblical nature of some of the characters names, mostly Joe and Marian, and if one wanted to really stretch it, I guess you could say that Joey sounds a little bit like "Jesus". But to really stretch it, you could probably see Shane as a kind of angelic figure, having been sent down from "high above" to intervene in the situation, and doing a figurative battle with the devil's emissary (Wilson, who looks to me like a really demonic figure).

I realize that might be too much of a stretch for some folks, but biblical stories and themes were all the rage in the 50s, after all it's the decade that gave us "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur". ;)

  6. Nice photo, coopsgirl! You really do have all the best Coop photos.

To all Coop fans, someone just IM'd me to urge me to vote for Coop (and his Will Kane character) in today's imdb.com movie poll.

    The question is as follows:

*From Entertainment Weekly's list of the "20 All-Time Coolest Heroes in Pop Culture," whom would you call the coolest?*

Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) from "Alias"

Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) from To Kill a Mockingbird

Batman (Christian Bale) from The Dark Knight

Nancy Drew (not necessarily Emma Roberts from Nancy Drew)

Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) from "24"

    Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood)

_*Will Kane (Gary Cooper) from High Noon*_

    Foxy Brown (Pam Grier)

Captain James T. Kirk (Will Shatner) from "Star Trek"

Max (Mel Gibson) from Mad Max, etc.

    Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire)

Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) from The Adventures of Robin Hood

Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from the Star Wars saga

John McClane (Bruce Willis) from the Die Hard saga

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from the Alien saga

    Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe)

Superman (Christopher Reeve) from the pre-Bryan Singer era

    Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford)

    James Bond (any incarnation)

    I have no opinion.

Not that it matters all that much, but I thought perhaps some Coop fans here would get a kick from voting for him. ;)

  7. What an irony! When I was younger, Blockbuster seemed the indestructible 800-pound gorilla of the video industry. Its quick expansion in the 80s led to thousands of mom-and-pop video stores going out of business, because they simply could not compete. Almost nobody seemed able to have bigger, better-stocked video stores than Blockbuster Video. (It also imposed certain censorship on unrated titles, but that's a whole other thread topic).

And now, it is Blockbuster that is unable to compete with some younger companies and is apparently _on the brink of going under_ - at least according to this news item:

*Blockbuster Warns It Could Go Under*

    7 April 2009 2:38 AM, PDT

After repeatedly maintaining that it was in no danger of going under, Blockbuster on Monday warned that if it is unable to complete loan deals, it may be unable "to continue as a going concern." Blockbuster, the largest movie rental company, has faced daunting challenges from kiosk operators, online rental outfits (particularly Netflix), and pirates. Although the company said last week that it had received a $250-million revolving loan maturing in 18 months, it indicated on Monday that the loan was subject to certain conditions that it might not be able to meet and that while it expected to close the deal with the lenders by about May 11, "there can be no assurance regarding these matters." The statement, made after the markets closed on Monday, sent shares of Blockbuster tumbling more than 10 percent in early trading today (Tuesday).

    Ahhh... the irony. B-)

  8. I visited the website that first reported about this restoration and found there is new information about taking donations to fund the restoration efforts for THE ALAMO:

    http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

Now then... here's the big news today: Our own Robert Harris has informed us that the Jacob Burns Film Center is acting as the charitable sponsor for his new effort to save MGM's The Alamo. The Center is now accepting tax-deductable donations that will help fund the restoration. You can currently send donations via check to:

    Jacob Burns Film Center

    405 Manville Road

    Pleasantville, NY 10570

    Att: Dominick Balletta

Please include "f/b/o Alamo Restoration" in the memo field. Links will soon be available to allow PayPal and credit card payments as well, and we'll let you know as soon as they're ready. We know times are tough, but please consider making a donation because the film elements have deteriorated to the point where it's now or never - if the film isn't restored this year, people will never again be able to experience it in its original 70mm/6-track stereo glory. And the result of this restoration will be new restored DVD and Blu-ray releases of the general release and roadshow versions of the film, as well as select theatrical screenings. This is your chance to play a direct role in saving one of John Wayne great films, so please don't miss it.
