Never mind Motley Crue (with or without umlauts.) I may not like "metal", but I like what it was before it became metal. Nobody rocked harder than Led Zeppelin, when they felt like it (and they often did.)
This is my favourite Led Zeppelin song. I had to go with a live version, but the sound isn't very good. It should be at 11 squared. REALLY LOUD. Unfortunately, the volume on the computer just can't take it quite high enough. I like that little English schoolboy sleeveless sweater Jimmy's wearing. He and Robert look like they had a WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: (although not necessarily, I hasten to add, for each other.)
(sorry about the ad at the beginning.)

I know I'm repeating myself:
"...I find that all these shorts, featurettes, testimonials, vintage movie trailers, "This Month News", and even the "ads" for tcm are all part of the Turner Classic Movie experience, and I like them very much.
Do others feel the same way? "
How do you TCM fans feel about the extras mentioned above?

Great song. I think I already posted that one a while back.
This ain't no party-this ain't no disco - this ain't no foolin' around.
No time for dancing -or CBGB's - I aint' got time for that now.

Trolls? You know, if you wanted, you could even put an unsavoury spin on The Three Billy Goats Gruff . Why exactly is that troll hanging around the bridge in that creepy fashion? And isn't at least the first billy goat who tries to cross the bridge a minor?

I just recently saw *Baby Doll*, also based on a Tennessee Williams play, also set in Mississippi (I think.) What was really weird about it was, I couldn't figure out what time of year it was supposed to be -well, November, I guess, because Carrol Baker's 20th birthday was coming up, and her birthday was in November. But - do the trees lose their leaves, they way they do in the north? Or was Elia Kazan just trying to make the ruined and spooky old plantation look even more so (ruined and spooky) with the bare trees?
Prince Edward Island - yeah, baby! That is one beautiful place; even it can get hot, though, although perhaps not as hot as the more inland parts of Canada.

So...not to hijack the original poster's thread, but she raised a subject worth thinking about: The Turner Classic Movies shorts, not only the excellently produced "Word of Mouth" series,( which, as she pointed out, are indeed TCM produced ), but also the myriad of other Turner shorts, be they original TCM productions, or imported from somewhere else.
I find that all these shorts, featurettes, testimonials, vintage movie trailers, "This Month News", and even the "ads" for tcm are all part of the Turner Classic Movie experience, and I like them very much.

I kind of liked Pat O'Brien in that. Who'd have thought that Lombard and O'Brien would have been paired as a romantic couple?

D'oh...I don't know why I should do this for you, finance, after dissing one of my absolute favourite albums of all time. But anyway, here you go. (You do know how to "receive" the song, of course, even if you aren't entirely clear on how to post it? You just click your mouse on it.) Not that you deserve this, but:
I'm worried that that handsome young man in the puffy shirt is going to fall off that glass column, into an abyss of postpunkpop. Forever eighties.

helenbaby (hey, I can't say helen, baby, because you're already helenbaby) -I have two things to say.
1: I just got back from a trip to the American South -Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and I was going to respond to MFF as you did - my experience was that it was hot, hot, hot ! Every day was at least 35 degrees (sorry, that's about 90 degrees F.)
2: No point wishing you were in Canada during the summer -it's just as hot here! Only thing is, it starts later and ends earlier. Our summers run from about June to late September, and believe me, it can get pretty HOT. This summer in Ontario was exceptionally bad, with highs hitting 40 degrees - er, that's over 90 F.
MyFavouriteFilm: one of the fascinating and gothic aspects of The South is the Heat; that's one (of many) things it's famous for, so why would a filmmaker want to be perverse and make a film set in The South in cool weather. I've always thought the almost oppressive heat and humidity plays almost like a silent but very present character in many films I've seen that are set in The South. When it's hot, it's hot (baby).

You guys must have a tin ear. Tin ears. Since you disagree with me, I have no choice but to complain to the moderators here about trollish and iniquitous behaviour. You're probably both Communists.
-
Hey, I can't help it if these studio producers will stoop to anything to bring in an audience. My mind is pure, as I'm sure is SansFins. But I must say I am shocked and appalled at the outrageous titles of some of these so-called artistic films. Just look at the cover for the Mickey Spillane novel upon which *My Gun is Quick* is based:

And just look at this:
Heller in Pink Tights indeed! Just what is this Sophia Loren woman waiting for? And who is "Heller" ? No doubt someone completely corrupt. (No umlauts over Sophia's name here.)
SansFin, I never before realized that my beloved world of classic films was a cesspool of decadence.

Van the Man Morrison recently released a live recording of his superlative album, Astral Weeks. I really wanted to post something from it, but there must be the usual "rights" issues, because I could not find one track from it. So, I'm posting a track from the original, "The Way Young Lovers Do". The video is just 3:18 of the Astral Weeks album cover, but don't dig out your copy of The Ambassadors and start reading, because you'll want to give your full attention to the music. Everything about this song is compelling - the jazzy rhythm, the punchy horns, the urgent melody, and Van's passionate voice.
-
"Big Bottom...How can I leave this behind?"
Well, at least we're not discussing any movies here with titles like *My Gun is Quick.* I don't know what's up with this website these days ...I think it may be a Communist plot.
-
Hmm, first *Ride the Pink Horse*, then *Heller in Pink Tights*, and now, *My Gun is Quick*, What were they thinking back when they titled these old movies? Talk about subliminal messages -not even so subliminal. I don't even want to think about what some of these supposedly respectable films are about.
-
Hey, Arturo, nice to see you're back. Your absence was noticed.
I do not receive the television channel you're speaking of, that is showing *Fallen Angel.* This is frustrating for me, *Fallen Angel* is at the very top of my "never seen but would love to" wish list.
-
...and, presumably, Ava Gardner would get 10 umlauts?
-
finance, I suspect that Mr. Bogle might beat even you in a Spelling Bee. Perhaps a tie at the very least. He spelt the word "umlaut", and that seems about right to me.
Incidentally, the French word for the same punctuation mark is "diaeresis mark" or "trema", as in "Noel" or "naive". But I can't get my keyboard to co-operate.
It is a well-established fact that the more umlauts in a band's name, the heavier is their metal, although not necessarily their mettle.
Also, the more umlauts in a woman's name, the more sexy she is perceived to be.

Lenore01: My curiosity was provoked by your comments on this thread, so I "googled" *Desert Song* to check not only the information about it but also the images from the film. Interestingly, there were very few images of *Desert Song* as far as I could see. Perhaps this is telling - usually when I google for images of a certain movie, I get many. Anyway , I found this. I'm assuming this is a still from the film?

If there is, I'd like to see it. Some of those Word of Mouth things seem to get shown more than others.
I'm all for whiskey on a picnic, as long as the participants are walking to their picnic site.(or staggering.)

.. ..
Like this ?...Motley Crue. (that was a bit awkward to do, and it still doesn't look like an umlot.)
The White Stripes are so cool.
hey, it didn't work. The two periods I typed on top of "Crue" looked ok before I posted, but now I see they are nowhere near the word. Good thing I'm not a big fan of bands with names that use umlauhts

I like Cary Grant, but why does he have two (tributes) while Mitch and Edmond O'Brien and Gene Tierney have 0 ? KathArine Hepburn has at least two - no comment.
I have no idea how these things work. Does someone approach TCM to do one, or the other way around?
I'm kind of surprised others haven't yet brought their comments to this subject. To me, the "Word of Mouth" shorts are the kind of thing that make TurnerClassicMovies special. If I'm recording a film, I'll often allow extra time just to cover the Word of Mouth featurette, or actually almost anything they offer in between the films. I even like their "Monthly Report" or whatever it's called.
And who comes up with those "ads" for TCM? Like the ones they had a couple of years ago, in which a clip from a film would look like it came alive on a brick wall? There were several -I remember one with Lolita taking off her sunglasses and apparently staring at some astonished passerby. And there was a really funny one with "Varushka", the model from *Blow Up*, stsriking sexy poses on this wall while an olderly couple stared; the wife smacked her husband with her shopping bag or something when she saw him gaping at the sexy outline of this model. These very short little "ads" were clever and funny -and must have required some ingenuity to devise.
Didn't mean to digess, but the TCM shorts and featurettes rarely come up on these threads, and I kind of think they deserve to. "Word of Mouth", especially.

Well then, you just have to check out Russian Dana Andrews in the 1948 film THE IRON CURTAIN which has him torn between the Party and the Canadian government, whom he expected to be quite different.
There's also Edward G. Robinson as a Montreal policeman trying to keep gangster George Raft from aiding the Commies in a kidnapping plot.
I'd really like to see that, especially if it's got Dana Andrews in it. And -bonus -I looked it up and it's got Gene Tierney in it too !
Now, what's the title of the E.G. Robinson/ George Raft flick?

Duh, I didn't even know who Douglas Emerson was until I "googled" him.
Good wish list there. I love those "Word of Mouth" tributes, it's that kind of thing that TCM does that sets it apart from other television stations. Shorts like this are like the delicious appetizer before the main course (meaning, a classic film.) Or sometimes, if it comes afterwards, maybe the dessert.
Yes, everyone you mention should have a Word of Mouth featurette. There are a lot of potential narrators for these people, because many of them are not relatives of the star, or even necessarily someone who worked with them. Sometimes they are just respected actors or filmmakers who were fans of the star -case in point, Jennifer Jason Leigh's "Word of Mouth" narration about Barbara Stanwyck.
Everyone on your list deserves one, but I would particularly like to see one about Robert Mitchum. However, I've heard that he was not always an amiable guy, so it might be tough to find someone to speak affectionately about him. Nah, they'd find someone. He could be difficult, but I've also heard he could be a pussycat (there, I've said it -Robert Mitchum was a pussycat. Does that not sound delightfully ridiculous?) Edmond O'Brien deserves more recognition in general. Everyone on your list would be a great candidate for WoM.
I'd add Richard Widmark.

Una O'Connor, yeah!
I also really wish TCM would produce more of these tributes, or find a way to acquire them from elsewhere. It gives us fans a special insight into how others -often stars themselves -perceive people we like or find interesting. Even when they show one about someone I'm not that crazy about, I'm drawn in.
How about one on Joel McCrea? (Don't worry, I'll save the jingle for the Joel McCrea thread.)
What are some other "shorts" and so-called "fillers" that TCM airs that people out there enjoy?
