It's really good, you should watch it. Some guy named Walter Huston has one of the best performances in the film 😉

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM
speedracer5 replied to Bogie56's topic in General Discussions
I agree too! I love A Face in the Crowd and I thought that Andy Griffith was fantastic in this film. I do love The Andy Griffith Show, but I found Griffith's performance in 'Crowd' so fascinating. The film is also very prescient and timely. We basically have a Lonesome Rhodes in power right now, but without any of the charm. I keep saying that 'Crowd' would make a great double feature with Network. I own both films. One night, I should just do it and watch this double feature. Network is basically Lonesome Rhodes' future 20 years later. -
HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

This is also Rita Hayworth's last film. The affects of her Alzheimer's was severely affecting her ability to remember her lines at this point and she struggled completing this film. -
Both hairstyles are awful, but she aged her 15 years in the second photo--but she does look like a more serious "working girl." I always love movie makeovers where the character suddenly has more hair than they had before, or completely different nose, or what not; but we're supposed to believe that a better hairstyle, clothes, and makeup is the only thing behind it. At least Working Girl didn't follow the common trope of "nerdy girl wears glasses, she takes the glasses off, and everyone realizes that she is actually really pretty." Instead, Working Girl followed another common trope, in "adding glasses to a character to make them appear smarter and more professional."

I am watching All Through the Night on Watch TCM while I am working. I actually think I own this film, it's on the TCM Greatest Gangster Films: Humphrey Bogart collection that I own, but I don't think I've ever actually watched it. Granted right now, I'm only halfway watching it, so I'll have to watch it again later more intently. I think Bogart was actually fairly attractive when he was younger, not "hot," but handsome. I really liked Bogart in They Drive By Night. That is a great film that deserves to be better known.

For the longest time, I only knew of Robert Cummings from his appearance on an episode of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour where he played himself. I figured that he was one of those "was famous at the time" type actors. Then I learned that he was actually in movies. I've seen him in Saboteur, Dial M For Murder, The Devil and Miss Jones, What a Way to Go! and probably some others. But I think my favorite performance of his is as the professor in the first Beach Party movie, where he's studying Frankie and Annette and the rest of the gang to learn about the social lives of teenagers.

I agree. I don't know why Alicia is so controversial. She even seems more prolific, imo, than Dave Karger. Nobody is questioning his knowledge or ability. Alicia has written a couple books and has been working in the industry covering film (as a whole, not just classic) at various festivals and events for quite some time now. Her accent is fun and easy to understand. As I learned here on the boards, she also hosts the foreign film series. I haven't yet seen how she fares there, but I'll assume she must have some realm of expertise there as well. I like that Alicia has been given the opportunity by TCM to take over some of the female-centric spotlights and such. It'd be neat if she and Jacqueline Stewart could pair up and do something together. I also think a film series featuring Alicia and Eddie would be interesting. I understand that everyone misses RO and will inevitably compare the new hosts to him. But, not to sound crass, RO is gone. We have no choice but to move on--unless someone has an archive of old RO introductions on hand. I don't, except for his introductions that are part of a few DVD releases that I have. I think TCM has found 4 really good hosts, plus Ben, to fill the void that RO left. Is it the same? No. But it's fine. We still get to see commercial-free classic film.

I thought Cary Grant was good in Suspicion as well, except when he calls Joan Fontaine "monkey-face." That's the only part of the movie I don't like. I know many don't like the ending. I can take the ending more than the "monkey-face" thing. Grant is always dependable, I liked him in his comedies with Irene Dunne and Katharine Hepburn. I loved him in Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday. He's even great in Arsenic and Old Lace, even though Grant thought he was over-the-top. He's really great in his romantic films like An Affair to Remember with Deborah Kerr. The only blight on that film, imo, is that stupid song that the kids sing. Ugh. I always fast forward through that part. That song, along with the song that the kids sing in The Birds, are two of the most irritating songs ever in movies. I've always thought that the birds attacking the children at the school was their way of getting revenge for being subjected to that irritating song. I was rooting for the birds. That probably makes me a bad person. Lol.

Dayum, CRITICS are SPITTING FIRE over CATS: THE MOVIE
speedracer5 replied to LornaHansonForbes's topic in General Discussions
After I saw this, I suddenly had visions of that episode of The Simpsons when Marge has a fancy doorbell installed that plays the "why do birds..." song. The doorbell gets stuck and the song won't stop playing, and subsequently drives her and Lisa insane. -
Jack Nicholson falling into the acid was my favorite part of Batman. My favorite part of Batman Returns is Selina Kyle cutting up a leather jacket (!) and somehow making an entire catsuit. Speaking of Selina Kyle, I liked how in Batman: the Animated Series, they had both Catwoman and Poison Ivy as sometimes villains and sometimes helping Batman. Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle dated in the cartoon!

I have The General on my DVR, I haven't watched it yet. I loved Steamboat Bill Jr and Sherlock Jr when I watched them. The fact that Buster Keaton really let a wall fall down over him in Steamboat Bill Jr. just floors me.

They were originally going to cast Tim Curry, but then it was thought that he was too scary. Tim Curry would have made a great Joker.

I would have given Mitchum the Oscar for Cape Fear. He was terrifying in that movie. I would say Mitchum was more terrifying in the original version than Robert DeNiro in Scorsese's remake. I say that only because from the outside, Mitchum looks harmless. He's an attractive, charming man and it would be easy to see how he could charm his victims into going off with him, only for them to realize too late that they were in over their heads. However, with DeNiro, it's obvious from the beginning that he's a creep. He'd have to coerce his victims or drug them or something to get them to go off with him.

I haven't seen this movie despite the acclaim. I am so sick of origin stories. Unfortunately, it seems that Joaquin Phoenix is a lock for the Best Actor Oscar. The Joker seems to be a juicy part for an actor. Imo, the definitive Joker is Mark Hamill in Batman: The Animated Series.

Is this what you're talking about? My view still shows the avatar of the most recent poster.

I think I have Armored Car Robbery on my DVR. I'll have to make a point of checking it out. I didn't realize that William Talman was also in that film.

TCM Programming Challenge #42 -- "The Game's Afoot"
speedracer5 replied to lydecker's topic in TCM Program Challenges Archive
Great challenge! I'll have to see if I can find time to create a schedule. I just didn't have time for the last schedule. I almost feel sheepish to admit that I've never seen a Sherlock Holmes movie. The closest I have come is seeing The Great Mouse Detective. -
I disagree. I think Alicia Malone is excellent and I enjoy watching her introductions. I also love her accent. Alicia is a classic film fan and that is apparent not only in her introductions, but outside of TCM with her books and podcast. I think TCM has put together a very good group of hosts, with Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone, Dave Karger, Eddie Muller, and Jacqueline Stewart. I just saw Stewart for the first time this past Sunday when I watched the series of Harold Lloyd films. I thought she did a great job and I look forward to seeing more from her if Silent Sunday Nights is showing something interesting. My husband and I are easing into the world of silent film by starting with the comedians as those films are the easiest to follow.

I've been wanting to see this John Garfield movie for a long time! I also love boxing movies. I am so glad that it didn't get removed from the schedule. -
GIVEN 1917 WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TEN WAR-FILMS YET?
speedracer5 replied to spence's topic in Your Favorites
My choice would be war movies that feature war as the back drop, but the boring battle scenes aren’t the primary focus of the film. I’m thinking something like Casablanca, Pride of the Marines, and Uncertain Glory. I’ll have to give this some more thought.
