  1. Haven't been a regular around here recently. I noticed I can't find the TCM Backlot thread anywhere, not even doing a search for it. I assume the moderators were displeased with all the smarmy humor and negative comments and disappeared it. Was any reason given for its termination, or did all of you just wake up one morning and notice it was gone?

Smarmy humor and negative comments pervades a lot of threads, but in this case, they were directed at TCM.

  2. Though I like American-made blue collar films, I've always really enjoyed the British take on such things, Speedracer.

A film I admire is "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" from the early 1960's by Karel Reisz and starring Albert Finney.

It is nice to see the British "angry young man" as they were then known, of the time period featured in films.

I might admire these films films a lot more if I could pick up all the dialogue with the heavy British accents.

  3. The 1990's was the last really good era for rock and pop output. Much better than the 80's had been.

Since the millennium, music has become extremely hook-less overall.

I respectfully, OK, disrespectfully, disagree. "80s alternative was much better than '90s alternative.

  4. There is a new Olivia de Havilland interview that will be in this month's issue of Vanity Fair.  For those who don't want to purchase the magazine, here is the article:

    http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/04/olivia-de-havilland-joan-fontaine-sibling-rivalry

There is a very bittersweet anecdote about a reunion between de Havilland and nine-time screen paramour, Errol Flynn, in 1957.

Then of course, there's the story of her famous rivalry with sister Joan Fontaine.

Another alternative to purchasing is reading the whole article at the newsstand. As long as there's no security guard.........

  5. Hmm, "video not available."  Will have a gander on YouTube.  I do remember the big Oasis/Blur feud, or maybe it was a mock feud.  Oasis had a good sound, but weren't the brothers often involved in dust-ups?  Somehow I missed a lot of music from that era, and need to catch up.

I liked very little in '90s rock, except for U2's stuff and some isolated songs by such groups as Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Offspring........ British or otherwise.

  6. Well, who would be the most likely rock star to pass out on stage? It happened during the "psychedelic era"

OK. At the festival at Isle of Wight, the Airplane was doing "Plastic Fantastic Lover", when Jim Morrison appeared on stage, spinning like a top, and finally collapsed. When the Doors went into their set, Ray Manzarek had to do the lead vocals.

    Open thread.

  7. Fairly big fan, especially of his albums from the 1980s.

Prince was very prolific, putting out about one album

per year for the last 38 years. I sort of slacked off in

the early 1990s. I did buy Art Official Age from 2014.

It was good, but not up to the standards of 1999 or

Purple Rain. He put out two albums in 2015. There

has been a lot more Prince music available on YT

since his demise. Some has lasted and some has already

been yanked. I've got the CDs, so I'm okay.

Parliament and Funkadelic. Similar personnel, but

separate record releases. George Clinton was the

    commander of both motherships.

I've had to go through 3 all_Prince spinning classes in the past week, and I reaffirmed that I am not a big fan.

  8. You be one big Prince fan, Vautrin. I remember you used to often try to post his stuff here, only to be given the message that it was "not available". Ironically, it seems that since his death, a lot more of his music is now available to share. Too bad it seemed to take his death to make this happen.

You're just one big funk fan, aren't you? I remember, I didn't know that much about Parliament til you started posting them (him?) here. And I is glad you did.

Please join the discussions on the Deadhead thread in "Off-Topic" threads. They are right up your alley.

  9. DGF, I think I heard this story in an interview within the last year, but I can't recall who is was.

Well, who would be the most likely rock star to pass out on stage? It happened during the "psychedelic era"

  10. My point about the weirdness of that day was that the only time I ever heard my friend say she thought she looked like Loren was followed, literally within minutes, by a complete stranger making the same statement about her.

And I've never heard anyone else since then make the comparison. By the way, whether or not my friend looks like Loren (I can now see a superficial resemblance around the eyes and cheekbones), she still gets constant compliments about her looks.

I doubt whether my acquaintance does.
