  1.   It's kinda' strange & the complete opposite of not only Robert 0sborne, but most film critics and buffs

there's really no listing of TCM's Ben Mankiewicz' & his own personal favs in cinema history?

    All I ever found was>

    *"West Side Story"

    *"Ben-Hur" (l959 version)

    *"All About Eve"

    & 1998's "0ut of Sight"

& have heard him mention  Steve McQueen as his favorite actor a few times & somewhat *Oscar winner Lee Marvin

I have kept files on everything cinematic long before the internet & wanted to add his to that list

    Thanks

His selection of ALL ABOUT EVE indicates some possible family favoritism. I'd be skeptical about any list of his.

  2. I'll always remember the day I was walking along a Toronto street with a friend who must have been feeling pretty good about herself that day because she suddenly said she thought she looked a lot like Sophia Loren.

This statement came out of nowhere because she had never even made any reference to Loren prior to that that I can recall.

My friend is very attractive, to be sure, but I never considered her to look like the mighty Sophia. Nor had I ever heard anyone else ever make the comparison.

But the weird part of the day (and the reason why I remember it) is that within a few minutes of her making this statement we went into a store to look around.

There, behind the counter was a woman who took one look at my friend and said, "Do you know you look like that Italian actress Sophia Loren?"

My mouth fell open, as my friend gave a beaming self confident smile that said "I know."

A woman recently told me that everyone tells her she looks like Sophia Loren. I could barely restrain my laughter. If that's what keeps her going.............

  3. These two famous rock bands appeared on the same bill at a concert. During the set of one band, a member of the other band came on stage, whirled like a dervish, and collapsed in a drug-induced stupor. Another member of his band had to replace his role during their set. The two bands? The guy who collapsed? The song the first band was playing while the guy whirled like a dervish?

Hint: One of the 2 groups has recently been much-discussed by me.

  5. Do you mean musical groups = like Marty Balin in Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship?

No. All these groups were during the psychedelic era, which means the late '60s. The guy's instrument was the drums.

  6. This guy was with 3 reasonably well-known American groups of the psychedelic era. His name? The 3 groups?

Hint: One of the groups was extremely well-known. The other two were just moderately well-known.

  7. What a great interview.  Sophia's son did a great job interviewing his mother.

I agree that Sophia looked great.  I also wasn't a fan of her wig, but she looked beautiful--she has the prettiest eyes.  I also loved her blue suit.  The color was gorgeous.

The clip of "The Human Voice" was interesting.  I wonder if that's what Sophia looks like without all the makeup or whether makeup artists had to make her look older.  Regardless, she has beautiful skin.

This interview was fun, I'm glad to see that Sophia is still going strong.  This interview made me want to see more of her films.  I think I've only seen Houseboat, Grumpier Old Men and Arabesque.  I tried watching The Pride and the Passion but it was boring.

I thought the story about why she didn't attend the 1961 Oscars was charming and funny.  I was also amazed at her earrings in the clip of her accepting the 1991 Honorary Oscar, I am surprised those earrings didn't rip off her ears.  Those suckers must have weighed about 5 lbs each.

When I hear "blue suit", I think of what Marty's mother told him to put on when he went to the Stardust Ballroom.

  8. It was Cain's Hundred, starring Peter Mark Richman, and it was on the 1961-1962 season.

  9. I'm very very shy, Down but I will fork over 87 bucks for an all day festival of Grant Williams' films.

Could you host that for me? I'll give you 20 samolians [sp?]?

OK, but first you'll have to tell me who Grant Williams is. Is he the guy who was on "Melrose Place"? That was Grant Something-or-other.

  10. Clearly this is just the latest scheme in the Jennifer Dorian mandate to come up with more "revenue streams."  Guess the Wine Club didn't garner enough $$$ so she had to come up with a new, bogus scheme.  They must think the folks on these message boards are terminally stupid if they imagine we'll pay $87 for vague promises of having some impact on future programming.  I especially like dangling out the "You Could Be A Guest Programmer" nonsense.  Unbelievable.

    Lydecker

I DO believe that you have NO chance of being a guest programmer if you DON'T come up with the $87.

  11. I always wanted to pitchfork Jaclyn Smitth when she would be playing an attorney in any of those horrid Lifetime movies.

Of course I would need more than a pitchfork if they had her playing a brain surgeon.

I probably more rightfully should pitchfork whoever hired her for the roles.

You must have missed the TV movie where they had her playing a rocket scientist.

  12. Aw, Henry Winkler is a mensch. I listen to a talk show on Sirius XM and the show moved from NYC to LA about a year ago. Henry is a frequent guest and the first show in LA was broadcast from Henry's house. He is a very sweet man. Not a fan of reverse mortgages but i don't hold his commercials against him.

    He may be a mensch, but his character was a s c h m u c k.

  13. Well, it was her first movie role. I admit it was pretty stupid, but for kids back in 1956, it was probably a big hit. I saw a couple of those types of films in my youth featuring the British Invasion bands, but there wasn't a storyline. Just someone who would introduce the groups.

I read a little bit about Weld last night and she was quoted as saying she tried to stay away from films that she thought would be big hits. It seemed, at least in the Wikipedia article, that she wasn't all that fond of being a star & worked to support her suffocating mother.

I was a kid back in 1956, and I doubt whether I would have been in the group that liked it.
