  1. Slaytonf - thank you for this information. It was very helpful. I didn't think to look up a particulat actor in this way before.
  2. Can you say if any movies featuring Louise Brooks have been shown on TCM? Would likely be from the 1920's - 30's. If so can you say which one(s)? Also, if anyone knows of any such movie(s) coming up on TCM could you please let me know. Thanks.
  3. I'm sorry. I thought since I was writing on TCM's message board it would have been clear I was referring to the TCM Daily Poll. It appears under Fun Stuff/Trivia near the bottom on the left of the screen. Maybe I was the only person who ever looked at it so they don't bother with it any more. Understandable.
  4. The Daily Poll has been the exact same question for weeks now. What gives?? Even when I don't have time to read the boards, I like to click on the Poll.
  5. Jack Palance James Cagney Karl Malden Ernest Borgnine Humphrey Bogart H/ever, every one of them had that special 'something' that made them something special, proving that looks ain't everything.
  6. Why would Mr. Osbourne know anything about this? Maybe you could contact the Academy & ask them. I doubt Mr. Osbourne has any say in the matter.
  7. Suddenly Last Summer Mister Cory Ten North Fredrick The Empty Canvas I could name more but since you only asked for 4 - these are mine.
  8. Agree with the original list. Out of all of themm frankly, if I never see 'The Cain Mutiny' & 'Ben Hur' again ever in this lifetime I'd be more than happy. I wrote in another thread some many, many moons ago about the constant showing of 'Ben Hur' so it's not a new thing. TCM seems to like it regardless of what we say.
  9. Agreed: Orson Wells - James Earl Jones - James Mason. Judy Holiday. Love her distinctive voice. Morgan Freeman, without a doubt. Maurice Chevalier, of course.
  10. This thread has taken on a whole new off-the-wall outlandish un-cool feel about it. I'd like to suggest *Kevin Costner* in response to the original thread which was 'Who's "cool' anymore?? Anybody remember the original thread????
  11. Clint Eastwood & Robert Redford would get my vote!! Or are they too old to be called 'cool'? OK, maybe Jude Law. Can't think of one youngish actor who would qualify. *Cool* went out with Paul Newman, Steve McQueen (who defined the word 'cool') & Humphrey Bogart.
  12. AAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!! is right. I'm still waiting for 'South Pacific' to come up on TCM Canada, For a movie made in 1958 what can the big deal be? Nobody can find out who has the rights???? Odd!!
  13. Oh Wow! Yes, thanks for the link. I had forgotten that fabulous opening. Truly beautiful, elegant & haunting! I would suggest "A Place in the Sun' - Montgomery Clift is walking along the side of the road, you see his back & then he turns his head & the camera catches him full face. Takes my breath away!! Couldn't find a link for it to share here.
  14. All I know is that Montgomery Clift should have won for "From Here to Eternity" I don't care who else was nominated, who else acted in a movie that year or who else was even just alive in Hollywood. Sinatra's performance was good, no doubt, but he was *not* as good as Clift. In this case the one who lost out was better!! Sinatra won because his career was on the slide & he must have had some help. This still burns me up thinking about it. Why? I don't know any of these people.
  15. I think YES! YES! YES! Great idea. How to do this????? Facebook got her on Saturday Night Live, TCM Message Boards should be able to get her on TCM!!! She's one super lady & I'd sure like to see what her picks would be. Yummmmm!!
  16. Having just seen this movie I am only now able to add a comment. I think it was a courageous and gutsy leap of faith for a black and white silent movie to be attempted in this day and age, but for it to have turned out so beautifully and brilliantly is even more astounding. It showed how actors had to portray their characters with exaggerated facial expressions and body language, how they managed it with the few words which would appear on the screen and of course a musical score. In those days it would seem the musical score *had* to be outstanding as it was being used to assist the actors in conveying a message. In movies of this era it merely booms into my ear drums and slams into my head like a mallet. In ‘The Artist’ it was brought back to me how important a musical score is to a movie and in this movie it could not have been more beautiful. Hopefully some present day movie-makers will take heed. The story was essentially true to life and I found the ending unpredictable and endearing. The acting was of Academy Award quality. I loved this movie and the cinema was well attended even though it’s been showing for well over 7-8 weeks now. That is saying something! I thought who better to comment on this movie if not the classic movie fans and aficionados of the TCM message boards but there’s not a lot of chatter about it…..surprising.
  17. Sorry Fred, I didn't see that you were referring to some specific movies. In any case I'm glad I was able to go back & remember some of the really truly great ones from the 1960's, so thanks for making me do the exercise.
  18. Thanks for your help. I'll try with the list again, if it doesn't work, I give up. Anyway, you get the idea. The Apartment 1960 The Wild Bunch 1969 West Side Story 1961 2001:A Space Odyssey 1968 To Kill a Mockingbird 1962 The Sound of Music 1965 Rosemary’s Baby 1968 Psycho 1960 Midnight Cowboy 1969 Mary Poppins 1964 The Manchurian Candidate 1962 Lawrence of Arabia 1962 Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner 1967 The Graduate 1967 Easy Rider 1969 Bonnie & Clyde 1967 Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid 1969 Dr. Zhivago 1965 Dr. Strangelove 1964 A Hard Day’s Night 1964

  20. h2. {font:Arial}{color:windowtext}What an absolutely silly, silly, silly thing to say. May I suggest that the original poster should state that he/she does not *personally* like any movies post-1960, but to suggest that movies made after 1960 are no good is rather naïve – here are a few movies of the 1960’s that are not only good, they’re great AND ground-breaking classics if you please – Even the 1970’s-80’s had some goodies. Not all movies can be all things to all people, but the 1960 ones listed cannot be challenged in any way shape or form. I would have been happy if 'Lawrence of Arabia' had been 5 hours long thank you! What if I just said I didn't like any movies from the 1940's?? How silly would that be????{font} h2. 21. Thank you. Maybe someone would like to discuss the movie *vs* the book?? Having not seen the movie I can't comment, but would like to hear what others have to say.
  22. Anyone who can tell me please when TCM may show 'Act One' again I'd be grateful. I can't believe I missed it this time. I've wanted to see it forever!! Thanks
  23. Favourite unhappy ending: A Place in the Sun + From Here to Eternity Favourite happy ending: An Affair to Remember
  24. Hello all, I think it only proper to make mention in this thread of *TIFF* (Toronto International Film Festival) http://tiff.net/thefestival which is a pretty big deal even if some in Hollywood would not care to acknowledge that fact. Many a great Oscar nominated film has had it's start here. I once heard on a US entertainment show that Alec Baldwin was attending a movie premier in Vancouver when in fact he was right here at the TIFF. That was astounding to me that the US entertainment industry had no idea what they were talking about. This year TIFF will take place September 8 - 18 - you should check it out.
  25. 'The Blue Veil' w/Jane Wyman is absolutely correct.
