  1. > {quote:title=voranis wrote:}{quote} > If that is the case, why did AMC have to go to having commercials? Somehow TCM had managed to remain commercial-free (for which I am grateful) even when similar channels which collect cable subscriber fees have said they could no longer afford to do so. I don't know who owns AMC, but TCM is owned by Time Warner (as part of Turner Broadcasting). I don't think this has ever been said officially, but I suppose that TCM can enjoy some leeway because Turner Broadcasting's other networks are more profitable. Plus, from a corporate point of view, TCM shows a lot of movies that are distributed on home video thru Time Warner's Warner Home Video, so there is some cross-promotion at work there, too. I'm sure that indirectly, TCM helps WHV sell more movies on DVD and blu-ray. I think that is why the current status quo may make business sense, after all.

  3. > {quote:title=audreyforever wrote:}{quote} > And, I just remembered, Since You Went Away was another gargantuan film released by David O. Selnick. Would you consider that epic? I don't think I would, but I haven't seen it in many years. Having said that I have to confess than when I think "epic", I immediately think about the big widescreen epics of the 50s and 60s, more than anything else. I'm sure other folks might have a different definition that comes to mind.

  6. Richard Widmark's not bad, but let's not forget the great Lawrence Tierney. He always gives me a chill when he's in a noir or gangster film.
  7. Thank you, rayallen. Last year's schedule was pretty good, but I like this year's better. There are some movies there that I don't recall watching on TCM, and also one of my favorite 70s musicals ( Godspell, of course).
  8. I'm still a bit surprised that TCM doesn't play it every now and then (at least since I've been watching). It's an RKO movie with fairly well-known stars. Let's hope they start showing it one of these days.
  9. Paul Lynde was in Send Me No Flowers with Doris Day
