    That's probably the best way to criticize the movie's shortcomings. There really isn't anyone with whom it is easy to identify, or sympathize. As much as I love Audrey and Burt, and Lillian too, I don't think this is one movie I'll be revisiting very often. I'm glad to have seen it, but I probably won't want to watch it again very soon.

     

    In addition to what you've already mentioned, and with which I would agree, in terms of producing duties, directing, writing, etc. influencing the final product, I think it was also a little bit influenced by the changing sensibilities of the time, the early 60s were not yet the time of most profound change that would come later in the decade, but matters of race were being addressed a bit more prominently by Hollywood. I don't think it was always easy to find the right tone, either.
